Even though Apple have done nothing to encourage the talk of under screen fingerprint sensing in the next iPhone I still think, given this announcement, that it would be of significant embarrassment to Apple if they did not include this in the next model.
There are a few questions for Apple here though and I suspect there are high level meetings going on about this at the moment.
Do they continue to struggle along to produce their own in house technology to achieve this?
Or, alternatively, do they very quickly kiss and make up with Qualcomm to use these sensors?
Finally, whichever approach they take, are they prepared to delay the release of the new iPhone to perfect this technology?
No matter the route they choose for implementation, I hope the answer to that final question is, "Yes", they will delay.
Maybe it's less embarrassing to develop it in-house for 2018 instead of asking Qualcomm for help. But you're asking valid questions. It's all based on speculation, so of course it won't matter a whole lot until we actually see the final product.
Fingerprint readers are a key technology for authentication, but there are also some great leaps in facial recognition which could alternatively be included with the new iPhone. If the future is VR/AR interfaces on glasses and the like, face recognition makes more sense than fingerprint readers. I still like both on my phone for now though.
