Where's a link to download the free player? Will the system requirements for the free player require the high macOS version as well?

I'm sorry to read that. That was so handy on an Apple machine.

You will not be able to virtualize an Intel operating system on the Apple Silicon Macs– this is Intel only. There's extensive threads on it.

Will this update now allow eGPU passthrough? I.E. Running an eGPU with a NVIDIA card on a LINUX VM on a mac?

Rosetta != virtualization.
Maybe read this again, slowly:
What Can't Be Translated?
Rosetta can translate most Intel-based apps, including apps that contain just-in-time (JIT) compilers. However, Rosetta doesn’t translate the following executables:

  • Kernel extensions
  • Virtual Machine apps that virtualize x86_64 computer platforms

That external graphics card support is terrific. Downloading later today to try it out.

I wonder how they pulled it off.

it’s limited to older APIs so don’t expect much. It doesn’t mean you’ll be able to get ray tracing and Direct X 12 features of new graphics cards.

That's good that it's free for personal use. I wonder what constitutes commercial use? A VM that's attached to a domain?

With Apple transition away from intel, I wonder if virtualisation would be a thing of the past on mac. Cloud-based VM are growing in popularity in the past few years, and supporting those on ARM Mac is going to be way cheaper and way more compelling than spending a lot of money trying to deal with Apple silicon and run a whole operating system on top of that. Plus renting virtual machine can also drive service revenue. Seems good to me.

Apple have already said Apple Silicon devices won't support Bootcamp.

My guess is Microsoft will try and get people to switch to Windows in the cloud. You will be able to rent a VM, possibly with some client software on your Mac.
well, they said it won't support the current boot camp..., and it's not like they've ever changed their mind... :)

You make a good point about the cloud. However some of my corporate clients prohibit the use of any cloud-based solution, even for encrypted backups. They are concerned about cyber security in the cloud. True, many are not, but I think we need to dispel this myth that everything will end up cloud-based.

Yes you will ! Anyone who bought Fusion 11 after macOS Bug Sir was announced at WWDC in June qualifies for a free upgrade.

Don't see why it would be a significant challenge? Just route the API calls to the external GPU instead of the internal one? Of course, you don't get native driver support, so you re limited to whatever VMWare implements on their side.

I have been running a Citrix VDI on my Mac for years and on my and my iPad for a few months, I'll Continue to do so on a future arm powered Mac.
Maybe some companies or clients don't want to use cloud based VMs, it doesn't mean they can't provide them from their own servers.

OpenGL 4.1 while Parallels still only offers OpenGL 3 (and no eGPU support). Parallels profiteering by avoiding any real development will be their downfall if loyal customers like me decide to take another look at Fusion.

Please don't treat me like an idiot. I simply stated the FACT that Rosetta is not a hypervisor.

OK, but why bring that up? Rosetta won't be any help running Windows (whether Windows on ARM, Windows on x86, or Windows on ARM with x86 apps inside) on an Apple Silicon Mac.

Well, as of now Microsoft does not officially provide any way to install Windows on ARM yourself (it can only be preinstalled on machines by OEMs), so VMware likely won't be the one to provide Windows on ARM virtualization on Mac.

Well, as of now, there also aren't any ARM Macs (the DTK doesn't really count). It's perfectly possible that either Microsoft is planning something of their own (I bet they're looking at what Apple's doing, closely), or have been approached by any of Apple, Corel/Parallels, Oracle/VirtualBox, or VMware.
