ps - I am Canadian and sick of people moaning about no iphone in Canada

I'm sick of people moaning about us moaning about no iPhone in Canada. We had every reason to moan, and now that Rogers has announced it, we're done, so you should quit moaning too.

Fantastic!

The iPhone had such a strange run being so limited to carriers and countries and now it's about to explode all over the world. Good work Apple, this is how it should have been.

Well no doubt you downloaded it, as tonight was the official start of the new season in Australia (yeah, that's a "new" episode, sucks how far behind we are compared to the US).

so first Telstra, then Optus and then Vodafone? i wont believe it until it actually comes out of Stevey's mouth.

Vodafone posted it on their website, I think that's official enough.

If I get one I'll be unlocking it, as much as I want an iPhone there's no way I'm leaving Telstra.

okay. sure. :)

Not so fast Vodaphone...

The announcement from Vodaphone as regards the information about Australia may be true, however nobody at Apple Australia knows about it. It could be a case of the deal being brokered overseas and nobody's gotten around to tell the locals... or it's a total fantasy.

I agree! When I first heard of the iPhone, I thought and hoped that Apple would sell it only through Apple stores and distributors, just like an iPod, and anyone would be able to buy it and pop a SIM card in. I would have gladly done without visual voicemail for that. In the end though, this strategy will work out to our advantage because Apple has forced the data rates wayyy down with their strategy.

Finally Vodafone saw sense and have jumped on the iPhone bandwagon. They're a stubborn organisation but at the end of the day they'll always follow the money.

I just hope they don't trash it with all their "Vodafone Live!" crap.

SL

how bout a vodafone live! iPhone?? lol:D

happy to hear that iPhone will be available in Greece.
but we dont know when.
and how much itll cost.

more anouncements, more anouncements!

Are there any good iPhone alternatives?

I've been waiting for months now for apple to pull their digits out and give us Australians access to this nice new toy but now I'm gonna have to look for an alternative 'cause I'd rather use two empty soup cans and a piece of string than use the worlds most crap phone company!!!!

I'm rather confused!!! I saw a news report not even a week ago on TV that stated Optus had exclusive rights to the iPhone here in Australia. Now this!!!!

Gee, I get the impression that all carriers here will have access to it!

From what I was told by someone here, when they bought an iPhone in the US, they simply put their current Telstra SIM card in it, and it just worked!!

I'm really hoping it's on multiple carriers in Australia as I am on Optus, then again, I'd probably just buy an unlocked version if it were available as I travel a lot and am not stupid enough to use roaming everywhere I go. Either way this is good news for me... bring on the early birthday present :D

I hope you're right, I have an associate who is rather high up in Optus who hinted to me a number of months ago that they were going to get the nod from Apple (frankly I'd be happy even with Hel$tra rather than Vodafone)

On a slightly different topic, Optus offer a service that allows you to have two different numbers tied to the same SIM card (one business, one personal) no other Australian carrier seems to offer this so for me this would be an ideal pairing....has anyone in Europe or North America had any experience with this kind of setup in conjunction with an iPhone (ie. iPhone + 2 Numbers on 1 SIM?)

The big story is India

I think folks are missing the big story from Apple's perspective -- they are now going into India, which is the second largest cellphone market behind China. Their sales could very well explode over the next year or so.

I suppose this has no bearing on the US market, right? We're the suckers who have the iPhone on ONE carrier. God, I would kill for a VZW iPhone.

ps - I am Canadian and sick of people moaning about no iphone in Canada

I'm sick of people moaning about no iPhone on VZW. Exclusivity contract, people. And Apple would need to make two different models (GSM, CDMA) for the same country.

Besides, VZW had their chance and they passed.

Unless the pricing and offering is significantly better than that offered to the initial European markets then this is abit of a 'so what'?

And it had better be the new version, not v1.0s that they can't sell.

I was hoping that, following the Italian model, the iPhone would be carrier-independent in Greece. The Greek Vodafone network is a little sparse, after all.

I believe it when I see it. As long as certain operators are chosen to distribute the iPhone, there is something fishy going on.

in fact the italian newspapers today reported this kind of model:
- iPhone locked to the chosen operator (TIM or Vodafone) during the whole first nine months
- possibility to unlock (paying a fee) and switch to another operator after the first nine months
- possibility to unlock for free and switch to another operator after the first 18 months

so it won't be a complete unlock.

Pity that in that bunch of countries, Vodafone hasn't got it in the UK - the O2 signal round my village is dire! I still have to love with my sad and old Nokia on Vodafone!! Urgh! Such a liberty.

I wonder how they are going to implement Arabic script on the iPhone? That's going to be cool to seing as there are an average of four different shapes to each letter of the Arabic alphabet AND it's written from right to left.

huh?. You do know that you can read and write arabic in OS X, do you?. In fact, you can already do that on the iPhone (check the native software subforum on hackint0sh/iPhone). Adding arabic support to the iPhone is trivial.

finally!

thought I'll never see the iPhone officialy here in Czech Republic. It's unbelievable! My Vodafone contract is just over.. so looking fwd to wwdc :D
Otherwise it's a pitty that Vodafone have the worst UMTS coverage here.. better go with O2. They have started with UMTS as first, now they have the best coverage and decent speeds. I hope unlocking wouldn't be necessary.
