SOUTH AFRICA!?!?! OH MY G*D!

I've been waiting for this day... there was reports that they wouldn't launch it here... well, that I assume was the first generation. OH MY G*D!!!

So I'm sitting here with my US iPhone. oh well :) got to sell it before it is launched... and it's probably gonna be expensive here.

YES! Vodafone in Portugal! Phew, I was getting a little worried. ;) Lets just hope they create a good data plan for iPhone, instead of the ridiculous 99cents/day with 10 mb limit.

Mmm. It'll be interesting to see how Vodafone prices them here in New Zealand.

Indeed it will - at least it's Vodafone who's got the iPhone for NZ, and not Telecom, although with Telecom abandoning their CDMA network for a GSM network it's possible they might also get their mits on it as well if Vodafone haven't got exclusivity. Still, at least its not just Telecom with it.

I would imagine it could be pricey - but I certainly would be seriously considering getting one. It would have to be price comparible with what's offered in Australia, else everyone will just buy it there and bring it over to NZ since the Vodafone NZ & Aus network is essentially one and the same.

Although, you can be pretty sure Vodafone are going to want to put all their Vodafone Live! crap on there. But the iPhone being what it is, it might not be that hard to remove or hide all that.

I'll still buy mine from the states, costs $533AU from the US. I bet it costs at least $800 here. It's funny, since our dollar has gone up to about equal with the US, games have cost $120 (that's DOUBLE the price in the US. It used to be around equal dollar for dollar), the price of food has gone up. it's like when you have a higher currency people want to rip you off more. Dirty rip off bastards.

whoa, that turned into a rant.

coool! so, how does 'later this year' translate??

Ok so this is one of those friend of friend of friend who works high enough up in one of the organisations to know said.
That Optus had a 6 month exclusive on the iPhone in Oz cheap on a plan starting july, or buy outright from Apple store all one of them.
But if that was the case then how would Vodafone be able to sell them this year.

If they are unlocked phones you can buy them anywhere. Apple resellers inclusive.

What's likely to be the case is that the carriers in Australia offer the phone, locked to their network for a certain period of time at a lower, subsidised price. The Apple Stores (2 in Sydney, 1, soon to be 2 in Melbourne) and all the resellers would sell the unlocked version at the full retail price.

The consumer then has the choice of paying less and getting a locked phone (for a period of time) or paying more and having a choice of providers. It's really the same way all the phones in Aus are sold.

i wonder if the unlocked version would be more than buying a locked one, then unlocking it?? it normally costs ~$70 to unlock, thats not really a subsidy lol.

p.s. lol nice you live at the gong. :) havent been there many times.

Hurray! This keeps me really happy. I was going to post this, i saw it 5 minutes ago on Turkish newspaper's 1st page(it was not a really big thing, but it was in page 10 :)) Well, the date is not certain yet as well as the price, i think date will be after WWDC and i am little bit unhappy because it can be expensive. Apple Turkey (Bilkom) gets their products from France Apple, and France Apple is expensive, when Bilkom tries to get profit, it becomes very very expensive. For ex: 16gb iPod Touch is 615$ If they get the iPhone from France too it will be like a thousand dollars or something:D Well, we'll see the price...

BTW: My plans for UK failed, they've found a credit card but O2 tried to sign a contract in the store, contract was saying: You cannot take this phone out of England. So my friend got scared and didn't buy it. This is great news for me, no unlocking etc...

Another note: I don't want to use Vodafone actually. Turkcell(another operator) is way more better than it. Here comes the unlocking again...

They (Apple Inc.) will probably have to sell it unlocked in Australia because of a clause in the Trade Practices Act of 1974.

P.S That's what "Media" websites are saying. I could look it up, but such act is in 3 Volumes & the first one is 554 pages long .

Ons sal die Appel iFoon he^! haha! (nee, ek's nie Afrikaans nie :D)
although it'd be a rip off with that meerkat cellular provider.

Ya probably, but it's illegal to sell locked phones here, so we'll be able to pay a cancellation fee for the contract and port to Virgin or MTN or whoever:)

?? Many many phones are sold daily through all of the carriers, locked to their network. Thats why so many people get them SIM unlocked form Parklea Markets and dodgy phone shops all over the place.

Or do you mean that apple could not directly (apple store/official reseller) sell it locked to a certain network?

i think he means like they cant all be locked to vodafone, and not be allowed to unlock it/use it on a diff network after 12months.

thats where its illegal i think.

Rural city?

Yeah, a city in the bush or away from the usual places - like Albury, Alice Springs, those sort of spots.

Big enough population to be called a city but small enough to not be a metropolis like Sydney or Melbourne.

The iphone's European launch has proven that simlocking laws are crap --- they can price it anyway they want in order to satisfy giving you the unlocking codes at a certain time.
