I love Beat Saber and I am not a VR gamer. Practically I downloaded 20 titles and Beat Saber is the only one I am still playing now. Not that other games are not good, Beat Saber is just a simple slashing cubes game with rhythm, but it is highly addictive and competitive, also it's a fun way to exercise especially when you play your fav songs.

Apple need a killer app to make the new headset a viable purchase.

Beat Saber is popular for sure, but it's not exclusive and is available on other platforms that cost a fraction of the rumoured 3k pricetag of apple's offering.

It's going to be a seriously hard sell if they can't do better than this.

Half-Life looks better for a $3,000 AR/VR Apple goggle. I hope actual game play is better than watching this video. Computer generated perspective is maybe what turns people off.

Here, Valve made some gameplay demonstrations of the different locomotion modes.

First is the default: Teleportation, showcasing this in a zombie infested subway

Next is smooth locomotion. You hold the stick forward and you move forward just like in any other game (recommended only once you have had more experience in VR so you don't get motion sick)

Lastly is a combat section with Combine soldiers demonstrating shift movement, which is like teleportation only it does it in a shifting manner to make it look like you moved there instead of teleporting there (Shift is also usable in smooth locomotion)

Quoting one of the biggest VR Youtubers The Thrillseeker he's excited about the idea of iPadOS apps being compatible on Apple Reality, and he hopes Final Cut Pro is usable on it, because if he could record and edit his videos all in VR, it would greatly enhance his work, especially since he livestreams a lot.

None of these 3 movement methods is great. Not great to watch.

Man there's no pleasing you is there? This is the first Half Life game in 11 years, the game that was the final nail to the "VR is a gimmick" comments, the game that millions bought VR headsets just to play it, and to you it's "not great to watch."

Well what do you want to watch?

Watching someone play a 3D game is not like watching a movie. Playing a 3D game is much better than watching it.

VR is not a gimmick. The Half Life game shows it is not a gimmick but the way a person moves around in the VR world still sucks.

Valve designed it that way so the game would be easily accessible. If you want more crazy movement there's Boneworks and Vertigo 2 and Stride and other more intense games. But when you're starting in VR it's not wise to start those games yet or else you're gonna get motion sick. You gotta build your VR legs before going headfirst into more adventurous experiences.

It's also the reason there's no Portal VR. Valve tested a VR Portal game, and all the playtesters puked. That's why Half Life Alyx has more accessible movement to avoid that from happening again. Since HL:A is a lot of people's first taste of VR it needs to have a good first impression otherwise if you make the new user motion sick they're gonna take the headset off and never try VR again.

I agree with you. Watching a capture of someone else play a VR game from their perspective is a poor experience, and a poor representation of what VR feels like.

Video of a person playing a game like Alyx will have a lot of camera movement.
But when you are playing the game yourself, the environment looks solid and steady. The scene does not move, rather you move your head within the scene to look at it from different perspectives.

There's motion sickness in VR games because movement is not natural and it's too fast.

Watching the Valve game-play videos can induce motion sickness.

As usual, haters gunna hate. Beat Saber is hella fun and a half-decent workout also! But, to be honest, games are the last thing I want Apple to focus on for a headset. I'm still hoping they solve productivity in VR/AR.

I gotta ask, how the hell are you gonna play games on the Apple Reality when the thing is believed to not use touch controllers?
The headset will be able to recognize hand gestures, but who said you won’t be able to connect any sort of controller to it?

I don't think you all understand how popular Beat Saber is. Beat Saber is the #1 most popular VR game (and hell most popular VR app) period. Millions buy VR headsets just for Beat Saber, that's how big it is. The game is so big they have licensed tracks from major artists like The Weeknd, Queen, Gorillaz, BTS, Imagine Dragons, Green Day, and more

Exactly. My only thought when reading the article title was “well yeah it ****ing better be.”

For a consumer to care, Apple's VR headset price will have to be in line with other consumer VR headsets. However, at the reported $3,000 price, very, very few people will buy one. So, if gaming companies are excited about an Apple VR headset, it hopefully means the pricing is going to be consumer friendly; perhaps various grades/models/use cases at different price points? We'll know in another week.
Most developers are excited because they see it being big by the time they get software written for it. I doubt this will be affordable this generation, but it doesn't mean it won't get high engagement for a VR headset compared to a PSVR or Quest. Apple has a pretty good track record and I've seen a lot of developer interest outside of normal VR circles. If it is good enough that you can use it as a primary device then it may be a good value in generation 1, but I'm not expecting that we will be there for a few years. Even then it will likely cost more than a Quest.

I guess a wildcard is if Apple releases something low-end and limited to mainly just games that uses an iPhone and competes with a Quest directly. They might be able to sneak such a device through the supply chain, but I doubt we will see something like that.

Popular virtual reality rhythm game Beat Saber could be one title that Apple is planning to promote for its upcoming AR/VR headset, according to a tweet shared by Beat Games co-founder Jaroslav Beck.

Beck today shared a tweet about June 5th, saying that the date would be "🍿🕶️," which seems to hint that a version of Beat Saber for the Apple AR/VR headset could perhaps be part of Apple's presentation. Beat Saber for Apple's platform is just speculation at this point, but Beck does not regularly tweet about Apple, and would seemingly have no reason to comment on the event.

Rumors have suggested that Apple is already working with select game developers to help them update existing content for mixed reality, and Beat Games could be one of the companies that Apple is working with. Beat Saber is one of the most well-known virtual reality games.

Players are tasked with using arm gestures to slash beats timed to music in a futuristic virtual environment. As the game involves both dancing and movement, it has been used as an exercise tool. Apple plans to promote the headset as a fitness device in addition to a gaming and media consumption device.

Earlier this week, the founder of the company behind survival game "No Man's Sky" tweeted an Apple emoji, which also led to speculation that No Man's Sky will have an announcement for Apple's platforms at WWDC. No Man's Sky is available for several VR platforms, such as the PlayStation VR.

Apple has been hinting at the headset this week, teasing the dawn of a "new era" on Twitter and "coding new worlds" on its developer site. Multiple rumors indicate that Apple is ready to show off the AR/VR headset and the xrOS software that will run on it, and while it won't launch until later this year, announcing in June will give developers time to create virtual reality experiences for the device.

VR…AR is going to be like 3D TVs. A gimmick. Maybe this will be Apples next Newton device. Lol 😆

The rumors are that it won't come with touch controllers, but who knows. Maybe there will be an add-on controller or Apple will make a third-party controller market. It feels like there needs to be force feedback and traditional controls for many games.

Anyone got a headache or motion sickness..? I think it's going to take some time to get used to this AR/VR. Maybe it's different when you are in the game.
Beat Saber is a very comfortable game on other headsets. No motion sickness or headaches. It is one of the best optimized games out there. I've never seen a video that looks anything like it actually does in VR. It sounds strange, but if you've used a headset before you would know what I mean.

Apple's headset will be way overkill for Beat Saber, but it would still be a great addition.

There's motion sickness in VR games because movement is not natural and it's too fast.
In Alyx with teleport locomotion, there is no movement, so it's perfectly natural. When you teleport your character, it's like when a movie cuts from one fixed camera angle to another. No one gets nauseous from camera cuts (except maybe if there are like multiple cuts per second).
Watching the Valve game-play videos can induce motion sickness.
If you put a GoPro on someone doing a mundane task in real life, the captured video can be motion sickness inducing. That doesn't mean that doing that task in real life would be motion sickness inducing.

I think the guy left the company , also isn’t it Facebook owned ? For this to be true Apple would’ve given Facebook access to early units ?

What a dumb looking game. If thats a headline app for this headset, I'll make a hard pass.
Come to think of it, I never gave a **** about their stupid headset anyway ...
Beat saber is a blast to play! Love it in the quest2

AR/VR headset very interesting however the first version of any new product is never any where near its peak. Time will add robust and Zest to this product with new Apps etc
