I'm not shocked at all by the delay to Broadwell. As I said in my other post, Intel engineers -back in May- were giving a 50/50 on a release this year and Broadwell yields have been terrible according to rumors.

Intel's Broadwell Chips for Most Macs Not Shipping Until Early to Mid 2015

Intel's line of 14-nanometer Broadwell chips, which are expected to be included in future versions of the MacBook Air, Retina MacBook Pro, and iMac, have been further delayed, reports Chinese site VR Zone [Google Translate] (via CPU World).

Wonderful, just wonderful.

260 days are passed since the last Retina MBP update.
At this point, i would be happy if Apple would make a minor boost to Haswell CPU and change the 750M (but sadly that's unlikely).

God's sakes...at least do the minor bump to the pro already so we can buy...I am really disappointed in apple..they should release the minor spec bump imminently

Immediate price cut and Haswell update, Apple!

I will not get ****ed over by you if you wait until October to refresh the line-up and miss the BTS promotion!

Might take a few weeks to make them...

It's not as if Apple learned about this today as we did. They're deeply involved with Intel. If Intel told us this, this early, Apple knew for a long time before hand.
It's not as if Intel decided this week it wasn't possible, the writing would've been on the walls for weeks.

I'm hoping to see refreshed Haswell MBPs this month or next.

I'm sure Apple was informed about this earlier than us. I'm really annoyed about Apple not at least giving a spec bump for the rMBP. I'm still working on my 2008 unibody MB and am checking macrumors every day if there's a refresh so I can finally buy a 13 rMBP. I'm planning on using the new MB for several years like I did with my current one, so I don't want to buy an almost one year old model...

What do you guys think about Apple possibly including a 4K panel in the 15" Retina MacBook Pro?

A few other manufacturers have added those to their high end 15" portables now and I'm wondering if the time is right for Apple to jump on board.

One thing that I think would add weight to this is the current 15" has the scaled resolution mode to offer a 1920x1200 desktop area (4K Retina) and so to me it would indicate they want to offer that higher resolution or they feel the need to provide it due to competitors shipping 1920x1200 and higher displays on their 15" portables.

What are your thoughts? Personally I would welcome the change.
I wonder if Apple will use pixel tripling with this level of resolution like what is rumored for the iPhone. One consequence is that one could have more than one "best for display" resolution, besides trivial cases where the resolution is doubled or halved (which aren't in System Preferences anyway).

3840x2400 would work like 1920x1200 at 2x.
3840x2400 would work like 1280x800 at 3x.

I think it is a great idea. I have had the opportunity to see both the Toshiba and Asus 4k notebooks and they were gorgeous.

If you have seen the absolutely jaw dropping 4k Chimei Inn demo on the MBPr you know how amazing it is. Watching it on both of these 4k notebooks was truly spectacular.

I think Apple will have to move to a 4k display if they want to keep up. I'm looking forward to it.

I also believe that the 17" will make a return at some point. It sold better than than the Mac Pro so I think Apple may bring it back with a 4k (or higher) display.

Well I think it would be a great idea for Apple to implement a 4k panel, especially if they used a Quantum Dot display. 4k is probably the resolution that'll become the standard for high-end laptops and stabilize the seemingly the resolution war going on between manufacturers.

I'm about to start college and wanted to wait for a broad well MacBook Pro but I just can't start school without a laptop. I'm banking on the next refresh to be clocked up has well chips so I'm not too bumbed out

I'm in the same position. I update my computer every two years and I want the new rMBP (I was going to get a 12" air, but the fanless idea put me off).

Can we rename the thread into "Not waiting for Broadwell MBP anymore thread"?

So, what are Apple's options for the holiday sales window? Apple often had spec bumps in the last week of october or first week of november. What could they include:

1. CPU speed bump (upgraded Haswell CPUs are available from Intel)
2. Spec upgrade or price drop
3. 850M or 860M GPU
4. other?

1. seems very likely, given that the CPUs are available

2. Might depend on the model, e.g. the 13'' base could be bumped to 8 GB, the $1.5k could get a 2.6 GHz upgrade, if they want to avoid dropping the price (to keep a separation from the Airs). For the 15'' a price drop might happen - or

3. an upgrade to 850M/860M for the low-end/high-end model. Unlikely, but one can hope.

4. Any other changes, e.g. a higher resolution screen, fingerprint scanner, more touch input, are highly speculative at this point. Anyone with good ideas?

I don't think an upgrade will appear in July/August - others already pointed out that Apple doesn't release laptops during back-to-school promotion, and in the past updates either happened before (June) or after (October). Apart from that there is still the possibility that a retina Air will be introduced... for that one I can't predict a date at all.

It would be cool if Apple released the rMBP with Broadwell before anyone else gets the chips. I believe they've done it before, and now would be a perfect time for the Intel-Apple relationship to make a comeback.

There's no way I can wait out until after Christmas for Broadwell and I'm disappointed because it'd add a few hours of battery life and give a nice GPU boost -the two things I wanted.

That said I'd be happy for a price drop and spec bump, because then I'd be able to get it in time for college and possibly get the 8GB, 256SSD model for the entry price, plus avail of the BTS promo. That would be a fair trade-off for me.

Exactly my situation - waiting more than a year was a waste it seems

I'll still wait.

My 6 year old MBP is going fairly strong, and the lower heat/power consumption differences with Broadwell will be worth it.

If Apple do release a spec bumped rMBP do the integrated GPUs stay the same as in the Late 2013 Iris GPUs, or are they bumped up too?

rMBP is almost 260 days old, and a minor refresh isn't going to retain customers.

There will need to be some surprising hardware innovation for delaying the specs for so long. Otherwise I'm boycotting Apple because this is their worst year yet.

I have early 2013 15-inch retina MBP (2.7GHz, 16GB, 500GB) and aside from battery life increase that Broadwell would bring, I frankly don't care all that much about CPU and GPU performance improvements (which probably wouldn't be all that dramatically faster anyway).

I use my MBP for development (Xcode and IntelliJ) and creative apps (e.g., Photoshop, Final Cut Pro) and what I really want are, in the order of overall impact:
  • 32GB RAM
  • Longer battery life
  • Thunderbolt 3 with retina 27" Thunderbolt Display
  • Lighter still (but not at the expense of battery life)
  • Touch ID (my company requires short auto lock timer)

They are going to wait just for this reason. They just started the Back to School promotion. Can you imagine how many returns / exchanges / refunds they would have to process if a new model came out before the promotion was up and the millions of people who purchased already were pissed? They always wait until the promotion is up to release updated Macs to my knowledge. So you're looking at mid-late September at the earliest most likely.

Highly doubt this... You assume everyone would care and find out about the new model

Thunderbolt 3? That's not expected until Skylake, and who knows when that's coming out...

Tell me then -- when has Apple ever released new Macs during the BTS promotion? If you don't think they take what I said into consideration, I don't know what to tell you. Why would they want to deal with a mass return mess? Their back to school lineup is set. Look at the website.
