Some customers (many customers?) would like to optimize affordability, reliability, and battery life in a high end laptop. I'm one such customer. There are others in this thread.

On the other hand, there are some customers who are opposed to circuit integration and want to give up affordability, reliability, and battery life in order to have retro discrete technology. It's not clear why they don't want to go all the way back to discrete transistors -- or perhaps some of them do.

Integration is the vector of progress in the realm of electronic circuits.
Yeah it would be nice not needing a dedicated got anymore on a laptop but the integrated gpus perform considerably worse, so until then having the option to have a dedicated gpu is a nice thing to havein my opinion

Quite honestly, I don't get where people think there will be a Broadwell 15" MBP this summer. Every time I Google Broadwell-H, there's just articles about it being skipped as its so delayed. I'd like third party support to prove my thoughts wrong but my research isn't showing it. Additionally, if they do release a Broadwell 15" MBP, why are so many confident that they will add USB-C and color options? They didn't for the 13" Broadwell, why would they here?

There was a considerable performance gap between integrated GPUs and discrete GPUs a few years ago but, with Broadwell and Skylake, that gap is nearly closed. Apple got rid of the dreaded discrete GPU from most of the MBP line a few years ago. This year or next year, it's time for Apple to complete the job.

I fully agree. I don't expect to see either USB-C or color options for the MBP before Skylake.

I think they didn't add color options for the 13" MacBook pro retina because they wanted to keep it as a novelty for the new MacBook but in June already 3 months would have passed since it's release it's wishful thinking I know, but I'm hopeful

It would make more sense when Skylake comes out and they just upgrade all the models at once. I'm also very skeptical about them adding colors to the MacBook Pro line period.

To suggest that Broadwell's integrated GPU is even remotely close to a decent discrete GPU is ludicrous. They are not close yet and won't be for some time. People still want discrete GPUs because they offer considerably more performance.

So the main question is: Will there be Broadwell CPU's for the MBP? If not, I don't see how they can bring out updates?

On the other hand, the update cycle usually isn't that long on the MBP's.

Def. I'm waiting for the 15" to refresh because I assume they'll update to nvidia's new graphics architecture. TBH, for my use, I don't need more CPU power - the GPU is my bottleneck. I haven't been following this thread, but it seems like some people are expecting the 15" to drop dedicated graphics?

I have no idea what Apple plans to do, but considering the fact that the 13" mbp didn't see a brand new design, I wouldn't expect the 15" to have a new design, either - and if they don't have a new design, why on earth cut out the dedicated graphics? If they do, I'll probably go with a 2014 refurb with GT 750m. Even the new (and still unreleased) Iris 6200 can't touch the old 750m.

Also - and I'm talking out of my butt right now - but I don't think Apple will use the GTX 960m in the 15" MBP, but I haven't seen a GT 950m yet. Perhaps nvidia had some delays designing a new mobile gpu that fits apple's specifications?

Are you suggesting that the pro gaming market is more important to Apple than the amateur accounting, law, and medical markets?

I think those fields are great candidates for getting the new macbook and MacBook air. Even the 2013 13" MBP would provide much more power than necessary.

There are a lot of other reasons to have a dedicated GPU

Totes. Among buyers of the 15" MBP, the need for a dedicated gpu may be a slightly niche market, but big enough that I just can't imagine Apple dropping a dedicated GPU. Someday? Yeah, probably, but certainly not anytime soon. Dropping the ODD slimmed things down enough for me for the Pro line.

Haven't I already read several times in this thread that Intel 'is not' making Broadwell CPU's for the MBP?

If that's true, why does there continue to be an ongoing debate about Broadwell MBP's at all?

Shouldn't that news from Intel mean the next MBP's will then have to be Skylake powered? And the next question of coarse being simply, when? 2015 or 2016? right?

I have this sorted out.

June - Macbook 15 with Broadwell will be unveiled. No they won't skip it.

1- Fits right in with the college going students timing. Skylake on the other hand is expected to go in production in June end. Like always their is gonna be a delay and apple will need to do some R&D to get the smaller chip in place.

2 - The next architecture is based on 10nm. Now Intel faced a lot of issues on reducing the die size of 14nm. Its gonna be more difficult to reduce it further. So don't expect a cannon lake before 2018 ATLEAST. Apple can't stay unupgraded for so long!! That is if they get the skylark upgrade now in June. Whereas if they get the broad well upgrade now then - Jan 2016 Skylake intro. -> Jan 2017 Skylake processors speed bump-> June 2018 Cannonlake!!

3 - It gives me some consolation knowing that a Macbook 15 upgrade is right around the corner since my 2011 Macbook is on its last leg. :D :D :D

How can it be unveiled if Intel says their not making Broadwell chips for it? (Well, that's what some are saying)

I'm with you on that :) My 2008 MBP has got to go!

That's just a rumor. Intel hasn't said that Broadwell-H would be skipped. I still expect Intel to release Broadwell-H CPUs in summer 2015 and Apple to release a Broadwell 15" MacBook Pro in the August to October time frame.

I've seen more evidence of Skylake coming out than Broadwell-H.

Do you think they'll at least put the new trackpad in the 15 even if they don't do Broadwell?

If they are going to release Broadwell MPB, count me out. No way I am going to buy Broadwell-powered MPB, since Skylake has so many mobile friendly features.

I don't see any reason why they wouldn't.

What I mean is if they don't go with Broadwell refresh, would they go ahead and put the new trackpad in the current Haswell model as a minor update in the next few weeks perhaps?

If there wasn't going to be a 15" Broadwell MBP, then Apple would have put the new Force Trackpad into the 15" Haswell MBP either at the same time the 13" Broadwell MBP was released or never.

All I know is that I want the 15" to be released so that I can buy a new laptop for college!!! I'm getting tired of sharing one
