Yeah, though Apple laptops currently don't have specs that can touch this, so, for now, the imitator is better than the "real thing".

-Frustrated waiting for an up-to-date MBP

If Apple released the new Macbooks with 950M dGPUs, what would the 4K support be like? There's no way they would power the retina display + 2 UHD @ 60Hz, right?

The current low-end 15" MBP with Iris Pro 5200 and no discrete GPU reportedly can power two 3840x2160 displays at 60Hz.

Asus pretty much released what the revised macbook pro 15" should be, the ZenBook Pro UX501

It has a 4k Display, i7 4720HQ 2.6 GHz (quad core), a 512GB PCIe SSD, 16GB of RAM and a NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960M

All it's missing it's an usb type c port.

If Apple releases a new 15" rMBP with similar features, I would definitely order one immediately. I don't mind a USB-C port -- especially if it is a 10Gbit version of USB 3.1. Also it better have at least one Thunderbolt 2.0 port.

a Thunderbolt-less rMBP is a no go for me since I have a couple of Thunderbolt drives/dock and mDP screen which I could no longer use. also TB2 is faster than USB3.

The Asus is configurable with a TB-port... I think I read that somewhere.

Current 15" MacBook Pro can power Retina Display + 2 UHD @ 60Hz, but as soon as you attach the 2nd 4K display, fan becomes audible. System is relatively smooth, but the GPU is definitely stressed pushing that many pixels at once.

This was with OS X 10.10.3 connected to a mid-2014 15" Retina MacBook Pro and 2 Dell P2415Q 4K displays.

Was that test with the iGPU-only MBP or with the 750M?

How likely do you think it will be that apple would provide 512GB storage minimum or are the new x4 SSDs so much more expensive that they would just keep the base 15" rMBP at 256GB with the increased speed.

How do you guys manage with the small storage size on these Macs? I'm currently using around 260GB on my current mac (About 110GB are photos). I'm considering alternative methods of storage but none really meet my needs. I use my laptop a lot every day and I like knowing I have access to everything I might need (I'm not always somewhere with an internet connection).

i put my iPhoto Library on a separate, USB disk. Never had disk space issues on my macs after that :)

I have several external drives. Granted, I'll always get at least 512GB of internal storage but once the new MBP comes out, I'll sell my 2010 MBP and take out the 512GB SSD and have a pretty fast external storage solution.

I was almost going to do that with my current MBP (it's the late 2008 model) since it would have benefited from an SSD and I could then use the drive as external storage, but I didn't do that in the end.

I think I might have to just rely on external drives once the internal storage fills up. I will choose to upgrade to 512GB if it isn't as standard on the refreshed 15" models. I have a large iTunes collection, which I could remove since I have all the songs in my google music account now. So that would save about 40GB. I just don't like the idea of having my files all over the place and I like to know if I need access to a photo I took a few years ago it will be there as I need it (or any file for that matter).

Yeah these days storage is still fast, large, or cheap (pick 2). Generally speaking I don't store anything on flash that doesn't require fast access.

No wonder the CPU was struggling to power that 4K display. If you were to keep on doing it the 750M can also have a DGPU failure (The amount of heat that it would produce) can result in a DGPU Failure.

I am not saying all DGPU would fail. But they would definitely have a shortened life ! Just my two cents !!

I'd look into something like this: http://9to5mac.com/2015/05/02/revie...acbook-like-ssd-inside-a-usb-3-0-flash-drive/

Though honestly, I'd wonder if you really need access to any of your photos, or there's a smaller subset which you do need.

I think you meant GPU, not CPU. And it wasn't a single display, it was 2 4K displays plus the internal display for a grand total of 21.6 million pixels, 50% more than what the iMac with Retina 5K has to drive.

I should re-iterate, it's not that the 750m drives that number of pixels poorly, it actually handles it pretty well. It's just very clear that the GPU is being pushed to do so and the fan is coming on. I wouldn't do this 8 hours every day for months/years on end. That's not what it was designed for. But with a single 4K display, it's whisper quiet.

I have only 128 GB on my current machine. Only about 19 GB free. 60 GB is lossless audio. I am in the process of deleting songs that I never listen to. The more I delete the more I realize I don't really need any music at all. Listening to regular radio and iTunes radio provides plenty of good music.

I've seen devices like that USB drive or another one is an SD card that is flush with the edge of the laptop so it's discrete. It's just that having something like that is another thing I could lose :/

I get what you mean about if I really need to access any photo at one time or a small subset. But currently I can't identify any subset that I access more frequently. For example, some people might only access (or more frequently access) their last couple months worth of photos. But I find I go back to really old one. Whether it is to show people, re-edit, or just to look at to remember something. Maybe this habit is only a habit because up until now I've had access to all the photos I've ever taken. They are all in one place and all available offline.
I do take my laptop with me a lot of places though and not needing to carry extra drives is a bonus.
I try and keep regular backups of my hard drive too. So if I have my photos on an external drive I'd want a back up of that drive. So I'd need 2 external drives and one of them would also have to be for time machine (if partitioning won't cause issues). Currently I just have everything on the drive on my laptop and one external hard drive to back it all up. I figure that both failing at the same time is unlikely. So this approach is a bit simpler.

If I get the 512GB drive it should last me enough time before I really need to thing about my other options. I just have to pay the price I suppose.

One question, is the drive actually 480GB before OS is loaded onto it?

So now we have more detailed leaks of the quad-core 35W Skylake-S models:

Core i5-6400T
Core i5-6500T
Core i5-6600T
Core i7-6700T

The i7 has a base core clock of 2.8 Ghz boosts up to 3.6Ghz, which is similar to the current Hasswell-H CPUs in the Macbook pro 15" with 47W TDP. Which means that Intel went all-in in improving power efficiency instead of increasing clock speed. Also, unsurprisingly, still no life sign of any Broadwell-H.

Wouldn't a 35 w fit into the 13"?

I did mean CPU only and not GPU, DGPU even though discreet is assembled on the CPU board so even if the GPU made the noise it is the unit of CPU which it is related to, hence CPU and not GPU
