here's to hoping that mavericks would be shown along with ios 7 at the sept event, and that they are doing it to show integration between the two.. then the rmbp will be announced alongside it.

The first third party motherboard with Thunderbolt 2 is available. Does anyone think this bodes well for TB2 in the Haswell rMBP's?
Yes, it bodes well, but I still don't think it's very likely.

I think you're wrong. I think they would release the product when everything becomes available, AND mavericks is done. If mavericks was almost done then I don't see the problem of them releasing it prematurely and putting out updates the following weeks after but that's still similar to my overall thought. Why would they plan to have mavericks done by a certain time if it weren't to have it released with the rMBP refresh? I think the difference between June and October release (Or september if it seems set up that way - which it doesn't imo) could easily depend on sufficient volume, I do agree with you on that. I don't know how progress is with Mavericks, so can't comment on that. But it would seem, it would be complete around October as well.
Apple have a long history of releasing Macs and MacOS on different schedules, sometimes a few weeks apart, sometimes a few months apart.

Why?

Apple's released new MBP's before prior to a major OSX update, and did so telling the new MBP buyers they'd get a free update when the new OSX version released in a month or two -- why wouldn't they do it again if they felt release of the MBP before Mavericks is in their best interest?

Fair enough. But why do you think it's not likely?

I agree. Apple is not waiting for Mavericks. It's software and its completion date is fluid. IMHO Apple is waiting for a top bin cream-of-the-crop GT3e selection from Intel. It takes time to accumulate enough of them. TB2 would be a nice side effect of that wait though ;)

I have been unable to find a single TB peripheral that only works with TB2 -- not even a vaporware TB peripheral.

Yes, this is not encouraging. But the new Mac Pro is going to have Thunderbolt 2 for 4K display support, at least. That's a fact.

Why not have TB2 in the Haswell rMBP's for the same reason?

Maybe Apple _is_ waiting for Mavericks. Maybe the new rMBP will have some special hardware feature that works only with Mavericks?

If they release Mavericks before or together with the new rMBP's, they don't need to support the new hardware in Mountain Lion.

Just a thought...

It's hard enough to find TB1 devices! Although I'm thinking about getting this: Akitio Thunderbolt 256GB SSD Drive

 ML not supporting hardware one-gen later?

That's ironic, because I'm a professional and I laugh when I have to be tied down to an ethernet connection, I absolutely hate the waste called optical media with a passion, my design applications don't require Apple's "amazing" dGPU, ;) I've never needed to "replace" RAM, SSD, or battery, and I laugh at my coworkers mess of cords/cables/usb.

Wow, sounds like you really don't need a lot from a laptop. Some of us need more and wish Apple would give us that option.

That's the reason why the Haswell rMBPs might include TB2. However, just because the new Mac Pro will have any particular feature does not mean the rMBP will get that feature. For example, I don't think anyone expects the Haswell rMBP to include two discrete GPUs.

Could it be that maybe, just maybe, Apple hardware doesn't fit your "pro" paradigm? Say it aint so!

Enjoy Windows. lol.

Wow, you really have to defend your position by insulting? And saying that I "deem" myself a "pro"? Am I supposed to be impressed by that?

"Macbook premium" heh... whatever makes you feel better man

Im defending my position just as you are yours, you insulted Brian as I have insulted you. Im trying to impress you eh? don't flatter yourself lol. Apple is shifting away from high end graphics professionals, and more towards the general public. it pisses me off, but it makes sense.. apple makes a pretty shiny thin laptop for the masses that will yield tons of profit instead of a beefy workhorse for a niche market that wont make them nearly as much. hence, the pro has changed to premium.

I insulted Brian? Wow. Pathetic.

Might is all we can hope for. The new motherboard news makes it a little more likely but as you say, far from a certainty.

Like to milk my hardware for as long as possible... If TB peripherals don't start showing up in a year or two, then chances are TB is on the same track as Betamax.

Well it's not a matter of them showing up, it's a matter of them being too expensive when you can get USB 3 peripherals that are less expensive. The benefit of TB is that it allows you to expand your system in a way that USB can't & in a better way than you could with ExpressCard.

Maybe the current (Early 2013) Retina is the way to go.

I sold my 2012 27" iMac 3.4ghz (needed to be more mobile) to fund my new MacBook Pro Retina. I've been waiting for about 2 months so far (while using my wifes old 13" MacBook Pro 2010...and damn it's slow).
I still haven't taken the plunge, but may have to soon as my work demands it.

I think to all the people who couldn't wait, congrats you did the right thing.
At the end of the day, it's just a computer and it gets a job done.
And the current Retina computer is a work horse.

One important thing to remember is that when they do release the Haswell Retina, it will be REV1.
I don't particularly want to be a ginny pig for Apple.
I think the current gen (Early 2013 Retina) is a safe/stable choice.

A personal opinion and perhaps one that is making my mind up.

i just pray for a 16 gig ram option on a $2500 13" for my wife.

8 gigs max with no upgradeability in 2013 rubs me the wrong way when my 2008 had 4 gigs expandable to 8 which is sort of ok for now but not for the 3-5 years i expect out of the machine (and no, the wife has zero interest in a 15").

8 gigs in 4 years will be like 2 gigs today
