You don't notice the difference from a quick tryout in a store. Try using it every day in 1-2 weeks, and then go back to a non-retina. Then you'll be amazed by the difference! You really benefit from retina when using it several hours.

I agree. I found it odd that in all the unboxing/review videos I saw on YT, people acted as if it was this mind-blowing change. It's really a subtle change that the eyes adjust to over a period of time.

Not saying a retina is just fluff, but the initial impression was just meh. I plan on using my dell xps as a backup, but I feel that after using the new laptop, I might just buy another rmbp for home use - possibly the current model. Like I said, I travel a lot and one less thing to pack/unpack is great for me which is why I tend to have 2 of a few things.

Since haswell uses less power, is it expected it will also generate less heat?

So he'll settle for warm nuts.:D

The first thing I noticed at the apple store when I did a side by side comparison was how much less reflective the retina screens were.

A question for people who already have a 15" rMBP: how comfortable is it to use the 15" retina on your lap?
I use my 15" 80% of the time on my lap. Once in a while I notice the warmth on my thigh, but it is not 1st degree burn stuff. And it's nowhere near "da boyz," so there's no "chestnuts roasting on an open fire" issue.

I think Macrumors still mentions Kuo as a reliable source, but his (or hers??) hitrate has been someone low lately.... :)

Yeah, but atleast its a well known analyst who makes the predictions, and not only the predictions and hopes of the forum users ;)

Exactly. The decisions about what were going into these Haswell rMBP were made months ago. And I'm pretty sure at that point Apple was unconcerned with what Dell might do too.

I do hope Apple considers the price. Dell XPS 15 high-end has i7-4702HQ w/ 6M Cache, 512G SSD, 16G Memory, 750m w/ 2G GDR for $2299. Thinking that is comparable to a possible MBPr Haswell high-end; given they stay with current pricing @$2799 we are talking a $500 price difference.

Kuo's predictions are no different than what's been floating around here for weeks. For all we know, this thread could actually be set as his home page. If anything, he only confirms some basic common sense upgrades. But no info for you dGPU nail-biters.

My only interest in the Haswell refresh is the sooner it becomes a reality, the sooner we move on to Broadwell. :D

I personally think the best thing Apple does is to ignore what everyone else is doing. It's an interesting business model.

C'mon Apple! Base 15" at 1999 and high-end 15" at 2499!! :D

If you have ever read Good To Great, It's the business model of many great companies during their successful periods.

I am beginning to think that Kuo gets his rMBP "predictions" by reading this thread. Didn't this monkey predict a September rMBP release?

Well, he/she/it has a reputation of being right more than being wrong. He/she/it predicted the current MBP lineup we now have including the continuation of the cMBP and removal of the 17".

But yes, the "lack" of details particularly about the MBP's this time is surprising but not unexpected given the fact we are now mere "footnotes" in Apple's revenue stream.

I'm beginning to know what the 3 iPod Classic fans feel like :(

You're going to cook your nuts :)

Look at my username...

I'm not concerned about heat, I've been using my laptop on my lap for years.

I was really more referring to the size.

So, do you people think the 15" rMBP is a convenient size to use on your lap?

Yes -- more so than a 13" for me, as the distance from my eyes to the screen is far enough when it's in my lap that the 15" makes a huge difference in viewing comfort. Broader palm rests are nice, too.

I'd agree, the 15" is actually a better "lap" machine, at least considering my body size. Obviously this is going to depend heavily on body size (smaller people are going to say the 13" is perfectly fine on a lap, but for me it's too small). The 13's primary advantages are in portability and fitting into small spaces (a tiny lecture hall fold out desk, an airplane, a car, etc).

Technically I even prefer the 17" for lap usage, but obviously it's not a very good portable machine at all (huge footprint + 6.5lbs).
