Woohooo, Apple(care) is exchanging my girlfriends 2011 MBP with a rMBP. They will call on monday to settle the deal. Awesome, but getting a 2013 rMBP 1 day before the haswells are announced just does not feel right :/

Congrats!

What is the reason?

Seriously? Apple's swapping out a 2011 for a new 2013 and you're complaining it's not a Haswell machine?

It had a few Problems - Graphic Card failure, the hinge had a problem and when the service provider repaired it they installed a normal glossy instead of a high res display and now the austrian service provider is taking nearly 3 weeks for a little repair. AppleCare tried to speed the process up but failed so they said they are going to replace the machine. That are the stories you only read online, but when it happens in real life it's incredible. When he said my gf is getting a retina I wanted to say: Hold there for a minute, I need a beer ;)

I was joking ^^
And it isn't even my device (it's my gf). She wouldn't notice the speed difference (Wifi ac, PCI e SSD, CPU, GPU ...) so the retina is perfect for her!

For those who are getting 16GB of RAM. Can you tell me why you need that much RAM? What are you running? I think 8GB is enough for me but I don't want to get caught 2-3 years down the line with no way to expand it.

OSX running PS/LR + VMWare ~6GB
VMWare:
1 Win7 with office 2013 + Skype ~ 4GB
1 Win2008R2 DC ~ 1GB
1 Win2008R2 w/ SQL2012 ~ 8GB
1 Win2008R2 w/ CRM 2011 + VS2012 ~ 8GB
1 Win2008R2 w/ SharePoint 2010 + VS2012 ~ 10GB
1 Win2008R2 w/ SharePoint 2013 + VS2012 ~ 12GB

Sure I could pause either CRM or SharePoint, but sometimes I need both, and I could not use PS or LR... but then it would be all work and no play.

I need more memory.

I've tried using cloud servers (Azure/AWS), but I really can't work the way I want to, + I have various snapshots at various stages for various clients.
And I can't lug around my desktop w/ 64GB to my clients.

If you're using your notebook to browse, and some light PS... 4GB is enough, 8GB plenty.

I currently have a 2011 iMac with 8GB RAM (and have been using it since it's release in may 2011) and never used more than 6GB of RAM (which was when playing some games in Bootcamp). I never played games on my current notebook and am not planning to do so when I get my new rMBP.

As for OSX: 90% of the time I'm not even using more than 4GB. I did a small test the other day and opened every app which sits natively on the Dock (+the iWork apps) and when everything was up and running I was using 4 gigabytes of RAM...

Only if you're often using software which requires LOTS of RAM or planning to use Parallels or VMware (for Windows) while doing a lot of other stuff at the same time: you might consider more than 8GB.

Running VM's and databases for my development. So it can quickly add up.

Running Future!

Imo that's the only reason (aside from virtualization) to get 16GB RAM. Nobody knows what is coming, so to play it safe max out the RAM (if you are planing to keep the machine for 4 years +)

Just mimicking u guys.

WOW to you sir!!![/QUOTE]

A question for people who already have a 15" rMBP: how comfortable is it to use the 15" retina on your lap?

Since I don't really like to sit at a desk, I mostly work with the laptop on my lap. The 13" MacBook Pro I currently have is a very nice size for that, but I'd love the bigger screen for my work.

I've checked out both sizes at the Apple store of course, but this is something you can't really test in the store. Therefore I'm curious about user experiences on this!

It gets hot when you push it for a while, otherwise it's perfect.

Same.

Exactly. The decisions about what were going into these Haswell rMBP were made months ago. And I'm pretty sure at that point Apple was unconcerned with what Dell might do too.

I'm pretty sure Apple is unconcerned with what whoever might do at any point.

Same thing happened with me a couple of weeks ago, except mine was a 2010 machine replaced with a 15 rMBP. Shame it's not the Haswell though ;)

I had both and the 13 inch feels better in my lap; both gets very hot so if you will use it like that for a while would suggest to use a lap base for it.

You're going to cook your nuts :)

I think anybody who is undecided between the two screen sizes should just go into the Apple store and do some comparing. That's what I did. It's really not a hard decision.

But you summed everything up nicely. I just think the size of the 15 is way too big, where as the 13-inch is perfect.

I took this advice yesterday at stopped by the apple store as it was only a few blocks from me.

What a huge difference touching/playing around with these are. Earlier, I wondered if a 13" will be sufficient as I have a dell 1640 and it's a good size, but a bit big.

First things first... I played around with the 15" rMBP and MBP. To be honest, I could not see a huge difference between both screens. I really had to look for something, but the minute I went over to the rMBP screen the image was fine. rMBP is nice, but should really not be a deciding factor as MBP has always been great.

The huge bonus was the machine size. I travel every week and carry my laptop back and forth from hotel to the office. I less pound off my shoulders is welcome. Both machines are great, but seeing the rMBP I will have a hard time choosing MBP for portability.

I've never used a mac before and always used a PC trackpad. I could not really understand the deal with the mac trackpad until I touched it and realized it depressed. This might seem like nothing, but it's such a huge change/bonus for people who prefer a mouse. I guess I'm weird because having a trackpad that responds improves the user experience.

After spending about 10+ minutes on both 15" machines, I checked out the 13". You know the feeling when you return a really nice loaner car only to get back in your 'what used to be nice, but now feels sh**ty' car? Yup, I felt that way about the 13. It just lacked... size.

Hoping the new rMBPs are released this Tuesday and my BTO is delivered by week's end.

is there any real reason to think they gonna announce haswell rMBP? it seems as an iPad event. i really need a new macbook so i dont know if to have my hopes up or not.

You don't notice the difference from a quick tryout in a store. Try using it every day in 1-2 weeks, and then go back to a non-retina. Then you'll be amazed by the difference! You really benefit from retina when using it several hours.
