I have no idea. IMO this Dell touchpad will still be finicky and frustrating to use compared to the Mac. It's all in the drivers and software.

Microsoft has worked with Intel to improve the touchpad experience from the software side for Windows 8.1. We don't know yet how this will affect the XPS 15 at launch, or over time as the software becomes compatible with more hardware. The touchpad in this video is easily as responsive as that on a Macbook Pro, so there is some hope.

I will admit that the touchpad is probably my biggest concern about the XPS 15. It's the main reason I won't buy one until Anand or Notebookcheck does a review of it. With the rMBP an excellent touchpad is guaranteed. Hopefully Microsoft will be able to bring quality to their OEMs' touchpads. This has been a major selling point for Apple laptops for a long time.

The XPS 13 specification lists the touchpad resolution as 250 cpi. While there isn't necessarily a direct correlation a direct correlation between cpi and dpi it still suggests that the hardware on the XPS 15 might be much better.

For those who are getting 16GB of RAM. Can you tell me why you need that much RAM? What are you running? I think 8GB is enough for me but I don't want to get caught 2-3 years down the line with no way to expand it.

I need it so for the next 5 years I don't have in the back of my mind "Should I have maxed it out:confused: There's new system software coming out, will I have enough Ram? Why didn't I just pay the $200?"

$200 is a small price to pay for 5 years of peace of mind. And maybe we will get lucky and they'll drop the price to $150

$200 for an extra 8gb of ram is nothing short of theft. I seriously hate Apple. Yet I will desperately throw my money at them.

Less than 72 hours guys !

I have been following this thread for over 72 days though

72 days??? Wimp :D! I've been waiting since Feb 8th - that's 254 days - 8 months, 12 days.

In this time, I decided to finally buy my dream car - I'd had the old one for 13 YEARS. Ended up with the car of my dreams - a Mercedes E350 - took about 3 months to find the right one, but I did.

And I'm still waiting for rMBP. Who knew spending money would be this tough.

Ditto. When I bought my laptop 5-6 years ago I put as much ram as I could afford and was fine for a while, but now I feel I'm rather bottlenecked. I'd rather not that happen again, especially because this time it isn't user replaceable.

Yes. Wife owns one testicle, Apple the other. I need more testicles.

Good. Old stock depleting. I still can't get used to the MacBucket Pro in this pic. I think Apple lost their patent on the "rectangle".

Oh, there's no question about that. But it is what it is. I definitely feel it should be $100 cheaper, but that isn't going to prevent me from future proofing my new baby. And believe me, two years down the line I won't be thinking about that $200, but if I don't max it out you can bet I'd be thinking about the Ram

I really hate apple too for soldering everything together. I don't believe it was to make user upgrades impossible but more of an engineering reason, maybe? (Correct me if I'm wrong) In any case it's wasteful on apples part because if one part goes it seems like they'd have to replace everything. My buddy just had ALL of the internals replaced in his early 2013 rMBP after having some speaker issue.

I don't know if they are salvaging the old parts after they do a replacement but I'd put my money on them just trashing it.

Lol. Don't we all?

Apple is always looking to the future. Blazing the path. Introducing the new MacToilet Pro

Its not theft if you don't throw money at them. Thats what I like about the Dell XPS 15, you can actually upgrade the parts, nothing is soldered on, and it looks slick. Apple should non-solder it once it sees companies like Dell that are able to achieve a slick design without proprietizing everything.

love the xps15 too, but with the non retina MBPs, this isnt really aproblem right? i can access the HDD and ram quite easily. so i just hope they get this right on all the new MBPs, inculding the retina one...

From the article...
According to one person familiar with the data, inventory levels of Apple's $329 16-gigabyte iPad mini Wi-Fi and $429 32-gigabyte iPad mini Wi-Fi remain "shockingly" high, with the remainder of the existing iPad mini line being in average-to-constrained supply.

I smell Kuo all over this article. Does that eunuch ever sleep? After 8 months of consistent failures, if rMBP is released this Tuesday I bet Kuo's shady self is going to start singing "I told you so."

It seems Dell is the one copying Apple to stay alive. They're now limiting options and have eliminated BTO option in the latest XPS. Something also tells me this XPS may not be user upgradeable. With 16GB ram, that's already maxed out. Can't go anywhere else with that.

Then you have the ssd. I'm not sure about this, but what's the possibility of upgrading to 768 or 1tb ssd? What's the cost keeping in mind that you may lose the 512 ssd in the laptop if you can't have 2 drives?

Another is the XPS-15 keyboard is apparently spill-resistant. I don't know how well this works, but from what I've read spilling a liquid into a Macbook keyboard is a quick way to kill it.

I can actually vouch for the contrary. Friend spilled half a bottle of beer over my 13" 2010 MBP and it survived no problem. Quickly spun it upside down with beer streaming out of the keyboard. Keyboard backlighting is no longer as evenly spread mind you.

Apple may have reduced protection with newer 'thinner' rMBP models though.

Why does it matter how big the trackpad is? Its not a screen, i dont find myself near the edge very often. At least not to a point where a couple cm will matter

How far in advance do we usually hope to see leaked SKUs? That's pretty much the only thing we still need to confirm a Tuesday release, but otherwise they could be waiting for Mavericks to release them. Also, if the Mac Pro is only going to be available in mid-November, that doesn't help the people waiting for TB2.

MBA got leaked SKUs the day before WWDC, but remember that doesn't always happen. Leaked part numbers do not need to come in order for there to be a release.

If its the "heat" that bothers you, maybe the new Haswell will run cooler, if not... then maybe the Broadwell next year...

The 15-inch certainly runs hotter, but the 13-inch being better for lap usage has nothing to do with that.

I got solid info from a source:

13 inch only iGPU, 15 inch RMBP will have both iGPU and dGPU version (not "2 in 1"), so you guys can shut up and stop fighting now.

When does your source saids it will be released? IGZO display too?

Well, crap. That settles it. Thread officially over. I really thought we could make it to 13,000 folks. :(

See you all in the Broadwell section.
