That's very likely. After all, Clovertown (65nm) and Harpertown (45nm) are pin compatible, as are their dual core siblings, Woodcrest (65nm) and Wolfdale (45nm).
This is not the official thread.
Mac Pro uses the Intel 5000X chipset (Bensley platform). It's very likely that this chipset does not support the 45nm Penryn, which is what Stoakley is designed for. Bensley also tops out at a 1333 MHz front-side bus, whereas the Penryn chips Apple is likely to use will run at 1600 MHz FSB. (This does not prevent you, though, from using a slower FSB.)With woodcrest being compatible with wolfdale, does that mean that you can plug a wolfdale processor into the current line of woodcrest mac pros??

So without knowing definitively whether you can swap your Woodcrest or Clovertown in favor of a new Penryn, I would say that your chances are rather slim.
Sorry did I upset your official thread, I am so sorry

Why do you remind me of a former member here who had a penchant for multimedia and close-up mugshots, hmm.
I'll be in my 3rd year starting Sept 09 so I'll use my final years discount for one of these babies plus a nice monitor
Wonder what we'll see late 09!!
Welcome back Multi!!!
EDIT
Oh crap, you got me. I thought it said Multimedia on first glance.
Just thought I'd pledge my allegiance to the 'waiting for nehalem' crew. Penryns are out but seem like the last before the big update this summer...
Be strong people only 4-5 months to go!
With Intel executing a significant architecture change next year, rather than plonking $4,000-$5,000 into a new Mac Pro Harpertown, I am going to let Intel shrink their dye size again and put in their new memory controller before I commit.
In the interim, the incedentals (DDR-3 RAM and faster, larger drives) will drop significantly in price, cores per chip could easily be up to 8 if not 16, and hopefully when I buy the big beast (or even better a mid-sized tower), it should last me a heck of a long time.
There it is. For now, I am waiting for Nehalem! It's not that far away.
Are you?
Official Thread Motto: We waited this long! What's another 8 months?
It'll be painful, but I think if you can handle waiting (ok 8-9 months max?) nehalem might just be worth it. Its irrelevant that many programs won't be able to use the full power of nehalem initially, it will make this up in longevity. Plus, if you run the pro apps (logic, final cut,[...],[...]) they seem to port those to use all of the cores etc. of new processors quickly enough.
I'm sure we can expect a full case and display re-design (its been the same for years now!) which i'm betting will be awesome and of course a monster power bump. I'll be waiting.
P.S. Liking the current front page story!!
