Apple gets four months of exclusivity. That's where that 18 billion is going. :D

Wait, what?! I can't find anything about this after a bit of googling..

edit- Sorry for resurrecting this old thread.. ended up here via search query.

Anyone know about Pro Audio and Nehalem?

Hey folks,

Is anyone waiting for Mac Pro with Nehamlem to,us in Pro Audio (audio and midi recording with Logic software) and the advantages or benefits over the present Mac Pro?

I am going Mac Pro due to the huge RAM capacity.

Everything should be equally better. Nehalem will bring around 20-30% better performance, and Snow Leopard on top of that could give us 40%.

T. Skil, Do you use Mac Pro for audio or video? Just wondered if you already use Mac Pro with Apogee DA16X and Logic Studio software.

And, should I get the 3.2 Ghz Mac Pro?

I don't have one of my own yet; sorry.

If you absolutely must get one now... ugh. I don't really even want to say to get one now. If you need it for your work, get it; go for the 2.8 if you're going to turn around and sell it right before Nehalem, but if that isn't the case, go ahead and get the 3.2.

When available?

Ski,

Whta's your info. on a release date for OS Leopard and Nehalem being packaged for us in 2009 for Mac Pro 3.2, which is what I better get.

Thanks, Brad

With Intel executing a significant architecture change next year, rather than plonking $4,000-$5,000 into a new Mac Pro Harpertown, I am going to let Intel shrink their dye size again and put in their new memory controller before I commit.

In the interim, the incedentals (DDR-3 RAM and faster, larger drives) will drop significantly in price, cores per chip could easily be up to 8 if not 16, and hopefully when I buy the big beast (or even better a mid-sized tower), it should last me a heck of a long time.

There it is. For now, I am waiting for Nehalem! It's not that far away.

Are you?

Official Thread Motto: We waited this long! What's another 8 months?

can this wait a month i dont feel like seeing it every day lol

Hoo...

DISCLAIMER: I know nothing. Well, I know things, and I'm fairly pessimistic on Apple releases, which has proven to be correct more often than not. But I know nothing for certain. I do not work for Apple (yet) and I am not Steve Jobs (but getting his job is my goal in life).

Nehalem Mac Pros? First quarter 2009 easy. Maybe not at MacWorld, maybe not the Tuesday before, but soon thereafter if not.

Snow Leopard? When Steve said; NOT at MacWorld, at WWDC.

I think a February release for Nehalem is not unreasonable no? At least if they announce it at Macworld in Jan, it'll ship in Feb. :)

Well, Tallest Skil, if you are indeed gunning for Steve's job, you'll have a good chance since the current competition doesn't seem too strong. The last event, and the macbook video just showed that to me.

i think we'll see something more in the order of march or april.
the xeon chips aren't out yet, and only a couple of two socket mobos are getting snippets and reviews, and both are preproduction. I think if apple goes with a dual socket workstation approach, everything that hasn't been released has to fall in place.
if they were to go with a single socket non xeon solution, they could easily get one out sooner. I just don't see apple jumping to get one out until everything that looks and sounds pro is out and stable on the market.

as far as prices for ddr3 and cpus going down, i wouldn't bank on it. i think ddr3 server modules will hold their price as they become more popular and you thought fb-dimms were expensive.
