LG just anounced the Gram 15 (gold) 15.6 screen with small bezels with a "14inch form factor" and it weights just like the retina macbook 12. http://www.laptopmag.com/articles/lg-gram-15-inch-specs

No words about the CPU version, but they would unveil all the line at CES 2016 so probably we will see something about Skylake-H by then.
Lol
Wonder what kinds of material this one is using. Maybe something lighter than aluminum, or cut down the batteries

Hey guys. Like most of you here, I've been waiting patiently for any news regarding the update. I'm kind of regretting it now and wish I just got one back in September (back when many said we'd see the release in November).

Frankly, I'm tempted just to buy one now before Christmas (now that there's rumors for a June release, sheesh!). Anyway, before I jump, I wanted to know if Apple has ever announced a MacBook around the time of CES (early January). It's only a couple weeks away so I may be determined to wait a bit longer if there's some hope.

Any long-term Mac enthusiasts care to enlighten? Thanks.

I'm not an expert here, more like a noob waiting to buy my first mac. But I can tell you that the first macbook pro 15 was announced on 10th January of 2006 and then on 24 april the 17 version. A 10 years anniversary could be a thing, but there is absolutely no hint about it.

Other releases:

October 2006, June 2007, November 2007, February 2008, October 2008, January 2009, March 2009, June 2009, April 2010, February 2011, October 2011, June 2012, October 2012, February 2013, October 2013, July 2014, March 2015, May 2015.

Hold out bro. You've waited this long.

Ah, that 10 year anniversary sounds very reassuring. Also, judging by the pattern of releases, it looks like there's a strong indication for a January announcement followed by a February release (which would set up a nice time-frame for a 'late 2016' model in October).

Thank you, you've given me hope to continue waiting a bit more. *Though I have a feeling I'll be 'waiting a bit more' come February :p.

Interestingly, the current 13" rMBP has an i7-5557U Broadwell at the top end, with Iris 6100 graphics. The corresponding Skylake is an i7-6567U with Iris 550 graphics. However, the new Intel Skull Canyon NUC due out in Q1 2016 is slated to have an as yet unreleased dual core 28W Skylake-U with Iris Pro 580 graphics.

I would not be surprised if Apple picks that chip for the 13" rMBP, since that would constitute the Skylake-U with the highest end graphics; Broadwell only had an Iris 6100 28W part, no Iris Pro . If this is the case, Both 13" and 15" rMBPs will have Iris Pro iGPU graphics.

The only missing piece now is a mention of when a 45W Skylake-H with Iris Pro 580 will be out. Possibly within the same Q1 2016 timeframe as the abovementioned 28W Skylake-U. If that's the case, then Apple will have the chips it needs for a Q1 2016 refresh of both 13" and 15" models.

Can't speak for other things like a new chassis though, since that's an internal Apple dependency.

I recommend waiting until january also. I didn't, I bought a mba during the thanksgiving sale weekend. However, I have until january 15 to return. A january 10 release announcement would work out perfectly for me.

Is a January/February release still possible, considering that we haven't heard ANY rumors about a Skylake Macbook Pro?

I am afraid we're gonna have to wait longer than that.... unless we're talking about Broadwell 15'

If it's Skylake (which it obviously will be), it's going to be DDR4. Technically DDR3 works with some motherboards and DDR3L is also compatible in some cases, but using it makes no sense for a premium product.

we already know that in February-march we have an Apple event

I don't remember if it was a leak or a prediction from 9to5mac, but it was only about iphone 6s and apple watch 2. Seems reasonable to release the computers at the same event but...

If intel (nuc) and other companies start announcing skylake-h laptops and devices at CES 2016, that could force Apple to release the computers before that event at February-March.

Crazy, yet not surprising, how much that looks like a MacBook. Here are reviews from the same website about the original Gram from early November:

"It's nice that you can lift the lid easily with one hand, but the notebook's hinge is extremely loose. It's also not tight enough to stop the lid from constantly wobbling, especially if you use the Gram on your lap. While the laptop's exterior is made of carbon magnesium (lid) and lithium magnesium (deck), the Gram doesn't feel as sturdy or as durable as the aluminum MacBook Air or many other laptops we've tested."

"...its short battery life, shallow keyboard and shaky lid soured our experience."

Sure, it's light and thin but man, look at those tradeoffs. Interesting that the LG has a similar keyboard issue as the MacBook. And micro SD??

My point was about the CPU but another thing is... if a brand like LG which we can consider as average in design level does this... just imagine what Apple could do (if they want) with the redesigned (if they do it) rMBP.

Can't wait to see.

PC manufacturers have already released several Skylake HQ laptops. The Dell XPS 15 is available with a i7-6700HQ, for example. The issue (for the 15" MBP at least) is Skylake HQ with Iris Pro 580 chips haven't been released yet.

Yep that's what I mean skylake-h with 580 like the Intel nuc and upcoming devices.

The new Skull Canyon NUC is slated to have a dual core 28W Skylake-U with Iris Pro 580, not a quadcore Skylake-H 45W part. The current Intel NUC has a dual-core 28W Broadwell with Iris 6100, same as the current 13" rMBP. There's no Iris Pro 28W Broadwell part, so Skylake would present the first time the 13" rMBP could have Iris Pro 580 graphics, which would be a substantial leap from Iris 550.

So the thing is, based on Intel's plan to release the new NUC in Q1 2016, the 28W part for the 13" rMBP will be available then. But there's no reference to anything about a 45W Skylake-H with Iris Pro 580 for the 15" . If there's no reference to one by CES 2016 in the first week of January, I would guess that the 15" is going to come out later, while the 13" could be out early, like this year.

It's one week until Christmas; Apple isn't releasing anything new this year (2015).

Where have you read that?

Intel already has a Skylake-U dual core with DDR4 on the roadmap and it's called Swift Canyon.

There is no evidence of a Skylake 28W dual core with the iGPU GT4e or GT43, but there are many of Skylake-H 45W and xeon mobile like the HP workstation with Iris Pro P580.

Also the Skull is Intel's logo for high end products... so it make sense if it is a quad core as small (and week) response to the AMD Project Quantum.

I really doubt it, but it would be great!

I just wanted to chime in with what I'm hearing. I'm a regular live listener of ATP, Accidental Tech Podcast. The word from the chat room for the show is that the processors will be announced at CES and the MBP could follow anytime after that. The tipster inside Apple speculates it will be at the rumored March event and be available at the very least in space gray. Similar to the MacBook.

That is 4 months old. Here's a 4 day old piece of news:
http://wccftech.com/intel-skull-canyon-nuc-iris-pro-580-powerful-2016/

"
In the first quarter of 2016, the blue-chip giant is going to be showing off an enthusiast platform dubbed ‘Skull Canyon’. It’s being tagged as the “most powerful NUC yet” and features the latest Skylake architecture combined with the elusive Gen9 GT4e graphics: namely the Iris Pro 580 with 128MB of stacked eDRAM.

Skull Canyon should see Intel’s Skylake-U series replace the Broadwell-U series processors in Intel’s NUC lineup, which currently has the Core i7-5500U as the flagship part."
