Go for 16GB of ram though. Especially when buying a new MacBook Pro.

I'm planning on getting the 13in. won't the upgrade to 16gb make it an BTO, meaning I'm going to have to wait longer to get the laptop?

even though, I'm planning on keeping this for at least 4 years, I'm still unsure if the $200 upgrade is worth it to double the ram.

I have a question here. What would be the difference between the i5 and i7 processors in the macbooks. More specifically, would the internal graphics processing power drastically change?

We'll have to see what they offer. Which i5's and which i7's and more importantly which graphics they decide to put in the machines.

Waited this long, what's another 2 weeks.

But, again, it all depends on you plan to do with your new MBP. If you plan to do video editing, photo editing, and/or even gaming, I would go with 16GB of RAM.

Also, who knows how much more RAM MacOS will need in the future. Even when I had my old MacBook Pro, It felt sluggish after upgrading to the new version of OS X.

Remember, you cannot upgrade the RAM after you press the purchase button on the apple site as the RAM is soldiered on (unless they change that with the new MacBook pro's or something changed).

Depends what you're planning to do.

If you plan to do video editing or other CPU intensive tasks that takes advantage of multiple cores, then I would recommend the i7.

But for most cases, you should be fine with the i5.

Yeah I have 4 gb of ram at the moment and it sucks I always have to close all applications and tabs to have some ram available.

But I won't be editing videos, only Photoshop and Illustrator work. Maybe some light games in windows with bootcamp. Guess the i7 would be overkill then?

i can't decide if i should get 8GB of ram or 16? i know i am going to get the i7 processor instead of i5 this time that's the only thing i regretted not getting on my previous macbook pro.

I have a mac mini with an i5 and 16gb of ram. When I use i7's with 8gb of ram, the machine is much snappier. If you don't need 16, I would go with the processor.

Not sure about Photoshop, I would definitely check out Adobe site and see what the system requirements are. But I would recommend 16GB of RAM for sure.

For games that uses multiple cores, the I7 would be more beneficial. But for some light gaming, i5 should be more than enough..but it depends on what games you play.

Thanks, I'll check it out. And I only play overwatch occasionally, and have no plans on buying any other games.

I know this reply is probably 10 pages in, but this thread is moving way too fast.

I think you're placing too much emphasis on the word "Pro." There are a lot of professionals out there, including content writers and even YouTube video editors who can get by on older machines. And then there are people like you who "need" faster machines. Everyone makes a choice about what works best for them, and for some a long-lasting "Pro" machine beats a MacBook which might cost a few hundred less but will be useless faster than a more upgraded MacBook Pro.

But if you're getting 1.5 to 2X productivity gains from a machine upgrade, that means human input is a very small part of your process. In which case, why even use a laptop in the first place? You'll never get the sheer power of a desktop, especially a custom one running Windows or Linux, out of a Mac laptop or even an iMac or Mac Pro. If performance is your only metric, it would be rather dumb to buy a MacBook Pro. The MBP is a trade off between strong-ish performance, a solid OS for human input and stabikity, and enough portability that you can work almost anywhere. Human input over performance has ALWAYS been Mac's strength.

You're mad because Apple releases machines that aren't the top of the line in terms of performance, but you should really be mad at the form factor more than Apple. Get a production-focused machine that weighs 10lbs (22kg) if performance is your key, or simply build a custom PC. Otherwise, accept the trade offs and enjoy a MBP for what it is.
I simply can't have a desktop, Mac or PC, so that's not even a consideration.
I'm mad because Apple peddles outdated hardware at a high price, and the turnover is really, really slow. 2.5 years to get USB 3, HDMI way after everyone, old CPUs etc.
There is a reason they have the highest margins (by far) in the industry, it's because they abuse you and you accept the abuse because Windows is so goddamn awful :)
There is literally nothing that stopped them from releasing USB3 in its time, or newer CPU when available, or ...etc. Nothing. Especially with those margins.

how does Windows ram usage compare to Mac? because right now I've been using an almost 10 year old windows laptop with 4gb ram and I have yet to use more than 3.5gb. this is using chrome and iTunes at the same time.

yeah I'm almost 100 percent confident that the ram will be soldiered on. however, I'm not planning on gaming or photo editing at all. maybe some FCPX of some little 4K videos from my iPhone. handbrake to convert some videos or watching h265 videos. do you still think 16gb ram will be worthwhile for me? even though im planning on keeping this for 4+ years.

oh and this is going to be my only computer too

i noticed that currently upgrading the ram cost $180... any chance this price will come down with the next macbook pro?

I think, they'll keep it at around 200$. But I expect upgrading from 16GB to 32GB will cost 400$ (and in Germany 480€... :( ), as much as Apple charges on the iMac.

Well, after reading last rumor, i can't wait for the 2018 E-ink keyboard MBP. Sounds pretty cool and finally we'll be able to buy laptops from other countries where prices are lower. I'm Italian and here Apple stuff is insanely expensive.

Video converting? 16GB of RAM IMO

You have yet to use more than 3.5 because windows locks it to arround that usage and starts being slow and moving things to the HDD.

If you had 8Gb I bet you that you would use arround 5-6 gb doing the same stuff.

And the Mac should use less, its Unix based so it's lighter. My ubuntu doing the same stuff compared to windows (Chrome open with 5 tabs and spotify playing) uses arround 1.8-2.0 Gb of RAM while windows uses 3+ Gb. (actually at this very moment of writing i'm using 3.2 with 2 tabs open, and spotify).

are you using 32-bit windows?

Here's a crazy question...do you think these MBP's are being rushed to market?
Were they really intended to go out in March with KabyLake chips?

I know, I know we've waited forever. But why was the earnings report moved ahead? Is this announcement simply to appease shareholders when see the massive drop in Mac sales?

What do you propose? Waiting even longer?

In that case: Dibs on the 50.00th post!

There will ALWAYS be something newer, better and more powerful. At some point, you've to pick your battles.

If you want the latest product you'll never buy anything and wait forever.

If you are a risk taker you buy the newest one and - if the case occurs - something new comes out again you sell it back to switch to kaby/coffee/starwars lake ...

I have that feeling too. Initially they planned Skylake for last year, but Intel was so late to the party they decided to skip it altogether, and move on to Kaby Lake. But Kaby Lake won't be available for Macbook Pros till next year, so they couldn't just skip once more...they just had to release something
