I don't trust MBPs+dGPUs since the Nvidia GeForce 8600 GT GPU in my early 2008 MBP failed. It would turn on, the hard drive would spin, but nothing would show on screen. Eventually, it got to the point that it would boot up, HDD would spin for a bit, and then it would just die with a whimper sound. Brought it to 3 different Apple stores...coverage denied by all of them and they told me it would cost $800 CAD to replace the logic board. Then it happened again with the 2011 MBP and AMD card. Complete ******** if you ask me.

As you can see, I'm still bitter.
i mean if you buy applecare and want a new computer every 2-3 years it would be wise to go dgpu

Honestly there is no chance of a USB A port. What would be the point? You either move on or you don't. I think the card slot is gone also.
The only thing that would fit on the side would be usb-c, card slot, headphone jack or lightning port.
From the leaked pictures it looks like the whole side is about as thick as the macbook largest point in back which only fits usb-c and smaller

Not going to do anything for my watch
why would you plug in the watch to the computer anyway unless you didn't have a power source around or wanted a quick charge when you're out?
Never saw the point in using the charging puck into my mac. Its always had its own outlet.
edit-saw that you have to charge the watch during the day out and about.
Do you not get a full day charge on the watch? If i don't use the workout app i rarely go under 40% on a full day with the watch. Even sleep tracking it the night before. Phones are a different issue

You know what, I read a pretty convincing paper on this just this week, but now I can't find it. So I tentatively take back that comment unless I can find that source again.

I think it had something to do with lithium crystalization, which I know happens with charging too quickly but I can't remember the exact mechanism for low amperage charging.

I'd rather shorten my battery life on the phone I keep for one year if my alternative is a dead phone. I don't always use my laptop, but there are times I need to.

how do you drain your watch so fast during the day is what I'm curious about? Unless you keep it on the workout constant heart rate checking.
 
Compared to LCD which lights the whole display using a backlight OLED displays have a light source in each sub-pixel which means that black pixels are completely turned of. This results in very deep blacks and "infinite" contrast.

Cost would be a reason but OLED displays in the 15" size are not nearly as expensive as the large TV:s that LG is producing. The cost has come down tremendously during the past years.

Then we have color accuracy, maximum brightness, etc. Which in case of the smartphone displays have caught up to (at least last year's) LCD displays, and in the case of brightness surpassed LCD displays. (1000 nits on Apple Watch 2 and new HDR TVs).

But, OLED pixels tend to degrade in light intensity the more they are used. This happens to the blue sub-pixels more than others which could lead to color differences in the display. If you have a blue icon in the dock, the sub-pixels there will loose their light intensity and it can "burn-in" to the display. So it is basically not recommended to have static elements always show up at the same place. This happens even in the newer phone displays, like the (exploding) Note 7 that has an always on display where everything on the screen is moving around slightly just to avoid any display damage.

It's gonna be interesting to see how Apple avoids pixel degradation and burn-in in the OLED touch bar.

for example, the base ram is 16gb in the 15in MBP. As time goes on, it becomes common knowledge among people that 16gb is what they expect. However, what if you bought a base 8gb ram 15in macbook pro in 2013? I feel people will quickly glace at the lack of the 16gb ram and not even consider it since it is the not the standard. I feel that in 3-4 years 16gb ram is going to be standard in the 13 in as well. I might be wrong, what do you guys think? Will 8gb still be the standard in 4-5 years? or will future OSs and common applications require more ram that warrants a 16gb ram machine?

It all depends how many more "features" Apple (& Microsoft for windows machines) decides to stuff into the OS. The more features they decide to pack in, the more RAM will be required

It gets more tricky for Macbooks (air, pro's, etc) now that the RAM is soldered on. Looking back, I should've spent the money and bought the MacBook pro w/ 16GB of RAM. At first, 8GB was fine; however, as newer version of OS X came out, my system got more sluggish, especially when playing games.

If you can, futureproof your new MacBook Pro now and go for 16GB of RAM.

what if the new laptops have both Kaby lake AND A10x in some sort of a beast concucsion !!!!!!!!

100% doubt it. It will either be Skylake or an AMD chip. Not Both. However, it is possible a Skylake processor & a AMD video chip will be together for the higher end 15 inch though. Besides, It has been mentioned countless of times, there are no Kaby Lake processors out now that is powerful enough for the MacBook Pro's.

If I have to travel overnight and head straight to a client site when I land, it can get drained. I can't sleep on planes and like to have it on, along with my phone. So while it doesn't happen all the time, there are times that it does. I'll work around whatever gets released, it would just be nice if I could easily have done it.

Yes, and it wouldn't be unlike Apple. They did it with the 15" rMBP and it was $2200 on release. The Alienware 13" OLED is $1400 at the moment.


Apple did this with SSDs in the original MacBook Air too. Before solid state was affordable the base model was a 1.8-inch 4200rpm HDD and there was an exorbitant 64GB SSD upgrade for something like $999, as a taste of the future - and the reviews loved it.

I would wager if cost was the only issue they'd pull this one again, but if there are quality panels in other manufacturer's laptops right now maybe we're closer than we think to this.
 
So guys....usually apples invite pics have some sort of a hint as to what is coming....anyone think the bright colors allude to a wide gamut or oled display?

well the oled bar is expected. whole screen oled might happen but i don't think it will. I think the colors show the macbook pro lines will have colors like the macbooks. matte black, gold, rose gold and silver

Can't speak to the quality of modern OLED laptop screens, but the Alienware laptops look disgusting, lol.
