I'm actually pretty excited for the fact that at this point we don't know 100% how it will look like in the end opposed to the iPhone. I miss being woed by Apple
*full leak + video comes out today* lmao

Remember this, the Time Magazine iMac leak? Steve Jobs must have been so pissed!

Once or twice we've gotten box spec leaks the day before, and Mac Pro leaks on the Apple Store itself. Still plenty of time!

It will be twice the data to process, but processing power (for the recording of the video) is not as much of a challenge as is space to store it on the phone. It eats up a lot of room.

I know you are already aware that the footage doesn't compare to a DSLR, but as a side note, the storage requirements for the video I'm occasionally shooting are huge. I use a Canon 1D X Mark II and when filming in 4K 60 fps it requires approximately 5.7 GBs of space for each minute of video. So I am only shooting/keeping clips that are very worthwhile and any extra fluff gets the razor pretty quickly. BTW, you should see the quality on a 5K iMac. It is absolutely stunning!

Obviously, the storage requirements for iPhone video are less, but the same challenges still apply. Apple could easily add 4K 60 FPS as early as the next iPhone, but folks are going to need a lot of storage room.

that's crazy to think that 1 min of 4K 60fps video takes up 5.7gb of memory. do sd cards handle that kind of bandwidth? or are you using ssds?

I used to record gameplay from my computer running at 1080p and 60fps. A 10 min file took around 30 gb (if I remember correctly). but the quality on that was stunning. I honestly could not believe my eyes. I was sorta disappointed after I uploaded to YouTube that some of that magic escaped and wasn't special anymore. I can't even imagine how videos from a professional DSLR would look like.

right now what option is better on my iPhone? 1080p 60fps or 4K at 30fps? I still can't decide if I want smoothness or sharpness. I don't have any 4K TVs and the 2560x1600 display on my MacBook is going to be the highest resolution I have. what's your opinion on this?

What are you debating? lol I doubt they'll even offer 8gb at all. I'll be getting 64 or higher if it's an option.

I'm getting the 13in. right now the 13in comes in 8gb standard so I expect that to stay the same. I have used 8gb of ram for a while so I personally don't see a reason for more (maybe because I never used a laptop with more than 8gb?). however, 16gb of ram would be nice to future proof my laptop for years to come.

I do expect the 15in to get 32gb ram option tho.

You can only record that type of video to CFast cards, which are about 3x as fast as the fastest Compact Flash cards out there.

In my opinion, on your iPhone, 1080p at 60 fps is the way to go for now. The quality is really good and as you already eluded to, you (and others) can actually enjoy the 1080/60 quality right now. Very few people can really appreciate 4K video right now, but that will change over time.

Never. These apple products are solid. As long as you dont drop it or treat it like a fiend then i wouldnt get it

actually I got an refurb 15in (late 2013) in 2014. after a year and a half I started get kernel panicks. this was the version without the dgpu. didn't matter what I was doing whether editing in FCPX or annotating in preview, the laptop would randomly turn off/crash (varied between every 5 min and a couple days). I even managed to control it and directly show an apple genius my problem. so I would say I wished I gotten apple care but then again Apple replaced a lot of stuff in my laptop after the 1st year so theoretically I didn't need AppleCare.

anyway after those problems if rather be safe and get apple care than gamble with Apple Store employees that they are in a good mood that day.

So will there be no hardware HEVC and VP9 support given there's no Kaby Lake?

This is the most important question. No HEVC and VP9 = useless machine in 2016+.

What I'm expecting is a separate chip that they will add for this functionality since it isn't on the SoC.

As long as you can get home in 20 minutes, you'll probably be fine. Before they get to MacBook Pros they'll probably cover Apple Store updates, iPhone sales, AirPod release details, etc. If they actually announce an all-new Mac lineup they might skip the company updates, but the MBP will be the highlight and they'll save it for last.

Thank you so much! :)

That's actually the smartest way to do it. (Buying AppleCare 360 days after you placed your order.)

I'm based in the U.S., so forgive me if I'm not up to speed on this, but doesn't Europe have some kind of mandatory warranty extension period for consumer protection? Perhaps our European friends can chime in on this...

Three years of Apple Care are referred to the day you bought the Mac, not the day you apply the Apple Care ("Extend your coverage to three years from your Mac original purchase date" http://www.apple.com/shop/product/M...n-plan-for-macbook-macbook-air-13-macbook-pro) so it's not so different to buy it on day one or after a year.

However, in EU we have 2 mandatory warranty years and various optional (and cheaper) extensions if you buy from a retailer, but the internet is full of reviews by people who had problems with Apple support in case of various malfunctioning without Apple Care.

I think I'll go with AC immediately taking advantage of the student discount (180€ instead of 249€)

Not for US. Buying it day one or day 364 extends to the same 3 years, but your complimentary phone support ends after 90 days until you restart AC
Same for other countries AFAIK. But this does not matter. I have contacted their phone support several times, they haven't been able to provide any support further than recite what's already been written online on their support pages and read by me. Of course I'm an IT person so I don't contact them for a question like "my screen is too small, how do I make the icons bigger". What I'm trying to say is that for tech-savvy person there is nothing in Apple Care except extended warranty and overall better attitude when contacting them about problems. Phone support does not provide anything you don't have already, just saves you from several Google searches.

I think the Polaris dGPU has hardware decoding for HEVC and VP9 10-bit.

Still, I can imagine trying to play 10-bit videos 2-3 years from now and the fans start spinning like crazy non dGPU models.

I'm psyched Apple is FINALLY set to release the next gen of laptops. I'm hoping to get my hands on a souped up 13" asap. My 2011 13" mbp is on its last legs and I'd love to replace it. Like all of you...I've been patient but am ready to move on! I have a couple questions about this coming launch:

- Anyone have an idea on how soon the macbook pro will be available after being launched? Is it generally available the next day at stores or is there a lead time?
- Someone mentioned in the other thread that build to order versions can take 2 weeks to a month. Does the apple store usually keep stock of a juiced up model or do they only keep the base models? I'm looking for atleast a 512gb SSD, 16gb of RAM, and an i7. I'm hoping I don't have to build to order to get those specs.

I'm hoping to reserve a model at the apple store and pick it up. Demand is going to be nuts though...

I played 10bit HEVC h265 1080p videos on my 2013 15in non dgpu MacBook Pro using vlc and the fans didn't even start spinning.

Good to know. 4K should be significantly harder on the CPU but Skylakes have a hybrid GPU assisted decoding so there may not be any problems viewing 4K 10bit.

I don't know about other countries, but in Germany there are 2 different kinds. The "Gewährleistung" (the one you mentioned), which covers 2 years, but after 6 months there's a shift in the burden of proof. That means from month 7 to 24 YOU are the one who has to prove that the product was defective when you received it. So basically it's like a 6 month warranty.

The other one is called "Garantie". That one is optional and manufacturers can make their own rules, what is covered by their warranty for how long under which circumstances.

The latter is what Apple offers as their 1 year warranty. On paper you have those 2 years, but in reality you won't get a free repair by Apple after the 12th month.

Yeah I also wonder if stores will have it earlier than when you would order it online. I can also order online and check stores the days after. Can always return the laptop if I find it somewhere else first.
