I'd attribute that to the fact that they kept selling the Air 2

Maybe, but not only did they increase the price (compared to the Air 2 at launch) they adjusted the price due to the weakness of the pound also!

Apple are never shy about hiking prices. Hope for the best but prepare for the worst.

I agree with you @navaira. I would like a matte screen too, but am quite doubtful Apple will bring that back.
the days of matte screens are over (at least in terms of apple products). I've largely gotten used to the glossy screen and in honesty if I saw a matte screen I wonder if I'd not like it

Well it didn't stop them adding 10% and more to prices of other products in September. And the pound has got a lot weaker since then. They've also done big price increases in other markets like Australia and New Zealand when their currencies weakened like has happened in the UK since Brexit. It wasn't that long ago that Apple jacked prices up by $600+ AUD in Australia.
I fully understand that but there's no point in simply increasing the price to maintain the exactly the same profit margin if it means that no one will buy it because it's priced way too high. Sometimes companies have to compromise a little in the short term because it's no use having a 40% profit margin if sales are going to drop by 80% because the product is considered too expensive.

My #1 hope is they won't write 'MacBook Pro' under the screen. I think they wanted to on the current rMBP but couldn't for technical reasons.

In general I think rose gold is as appealing as root canal without anesthesia, but I would welcome SOME sort of uniformity among the line-up.
I don't hate the rose gold MacBooks, I think they look rather nice. My daughters would love for me to get one, to be sure. Its not really my cup of tea, but I don't hate them.

Just give me your CC and I'll order it for you :p

In all seriousness, with so much unknown, I'd say wait and order exactly what you want. There may be enough questions or options for you to choose, relying on someone else to make those choices could be an issue

im trying to figure out what accessories i will need if they go to usb c? which seems very likely.

i plug in my iphone/ipad for syncing, external hard drive for backing up data/photos, and a camera SD card to transfer photos to my computer.

Rumoured, based on the specs from wikipedia:
- 2015 launch
- Chips will use the 14 nm process node. Expect some decent battery life
- Support for DDR4 memory
- Support for PCIe 4.0

I also think that this will be the model where dGPUs and Apple will part ways in notebooks. I don't think we'll see a dedicated GPU, even as a BTO option.

What are your thoughts?

Did anyone else realise that tomorrow is the 3-year anniversary of this post? Quick recap of what I have achieved in these 3 years
- Moved home twice
- Landed a new job
- Levelled 10 characters to 100 in WoW
- Had my son
- Published 3 papers and got my PhD
- Bagged 15 new platinums on PS3/4
- Learnt 2 new programming languages
- Bought and retired 5 phones (not all Apple)
- Visited this thread 101 times (and 90 times in 2016)
- Replied to this thread 1~2 times
- Visited my local Apple store about 50 times
- Asked that guy at my local Apple store 50 times "when's your new Macbook Pro coming?"

And it's finally happening!

And it's finally happening!
And you can be sure, regardless of what Apple does, there will be plenty of folks grousing about how Apple missed the boat on design, features or pricing

Heck, I've been known to grouse about perceived missteps by apple ;)

This ARM chip for the touchbar rumor sounds pretty great now that I think about it... we could be seeing some cool new features that let us use the touchbar without the laptop needing to be fully powered up.

What if that was the 15" casing?
Then we'd be getting an awfully big keyboard from Apple this time :)

2 days to go and the hardware hasn't leaked? Would be nice for Apple just once or twice to be able to showcase new hardware that hadn't leaked :) Peobably would mean a lot to the hundreds working on the products too.

Let's hope they mean business using "hello again". At very least is going to be a marker in time for a shift towards TB3 & USB-C, better displays.

Just checked the apple online store in Germany: All MBPs are still available for next day shipment. However, if you choose to upgrade to 16GB RAM (13") or larger SSD, shipment is estimated for Nov 2-7th! Would that mean that Apple would continue delilvering BTO the current models after the release of the new models? Or would this be an automatic upgrade without additional costs? Wondering if this could be a bargain...
The situation is the same in the UK so Im wondering this too! I know that some iMac buyers got an upgrade to the retina version when it was introduced.

I could always use my one gift card for purchase of mac and when i get my other one towards accessories. but accessories wont add up to $275 worth.

So its been years, and I still haven't decided on all the specs I want lol.
Going with the 512GB storage + top dGPU (if offered) for sure.

Cant decide between 16GB or 32GB ram, or the rumored 2.2/2.5GHZ CPU.
Is 16 > 32, and 2.2 > 2.5 worth it?

I would be using it as my primary computer. There will be heavy Photoshop + coding use, and probably a moderate amount of gaming (league, diablo and maybe more if its powerful enough...)

What do you think?

When do you guys think we would be able to buy these new Macs in store? A week after pre-orders? I'm trying to decide whether or not to pre-order it and wait or try my luck at the store

sorry i maybe lost in the pending UK price increase, but will it have thunderbolt 3 ports?

If so wont the discontinued thunderbolt display need an adapter to run? did some searches seems yes it would be another adapter at around £100...all adding up here.

I'm upgrading from a 2010 15" MBP base model (2.4GHz Core i5, 4GB RAM, 320GB non-SSD hard drive)-I mainly just use the laptop now for surfing the internet and using MS Office-I hear everyone talking about how much ram is needed, but I'm wondering if someone using the laptop for pretty basic use would need anything more than the stock? Like the previous poster mentioned, new software is hungry and now that my laptop is older it REALLY struggles to open anything the more I continue to upgrade my software (upgrading to Sierra was a mistake......).

In your case, stock (16GB?) will be more than enough.

There are risks to price hikes that is, alienating the consumers. With so many different offerings, they don't want the demand slipping due to the price increase, so they will have to take a balanced approach (be it that they may lose a bit of profit %). The £ may have depreciated, but the people haven't gotten any richer.

iPhone 7 compared to the competition isn't wildly more expensive (at least here in the UK) - while the macbook, compared to the competition, would end up being wildly more expensive.

They will have to look at that kind of thing yeah, I think the UK is quite a big market for them aswell so hopefully they don't co crazy with the pricing. That said I cant run Xcode on Windows so i'm stuck with it :p

I would have loved for Apple to use Nvidia 1050 series :(, but it isn't going to happen.

How useful would a pen really be on a laptop if it can't be used on the screen, I am just trying to imagine using one - and potential use cases.

The user experience when you use a pen should be ink coming from the tip - this tethering of the pen to a screen from the track pad will be an unusual experience I would have thought.

I am just imagine trying to draw something in detail with the pen, staring at the screen while I use the pen on the trackpad, and I just can't see it working well :(. Maybe for the odd signature or rough notes, but that feels like a waste. When you take pen off/on would the cursor move while the pen is hovering above? Because without that, it would be a dead feature.
That's how most graphic tablets work though. Your hand and eyes learn to work in coordination. You learned to use the mouse after all, haven't you? Tablets are slightly different but the learning curve is about the same. It's definitely possible to produce highly detailed artwork without drawing on the actual screen.

Relatively small size is not a problem either, since zoom levels exist. The S sized tablets are not that much bigger. In some cases, like photo retouch, small area may actually be preferable to a larger one. It allows you to do less hand travel for the same result. It may be a problem for the more traditional artists though, who use their shoulder more than they use their wrists.

Hover is something Apple would have to work on were they to offer Pencil support of course. But if Wacom can do it with their tablets, Apple can probably do it too. Navigating macOS with a stylus is perfectly fine. I would miss having the buttons on the pen itself but their functionality can mostly be replicated by the modification keys of the keyboard.
