because…?

Yeah man, why so pessimistic!? Let us HOPE :)

Wow, waiting until june would be terrible... especially on my 2007 white plastic macbook

I'm having a hard time understanding why people don't think these new macs will be announced in March. Obviously only Apple knows for sure but to me it looks like a March launch is more likely than anything else. Apple is rumored to be holding a March event anyway (for Apple Watch 2 and possibly iPad Air 3). Why not use that same event to launch new Macs rather than having a separate event just for Macs?

As far as I understand (correct me if I'm wrong) the chips that would be suitable for the 13" are already available. At this point we are just waiting for the 15" chips. If that's the case, Apple can announce and show both models and have the 13" be available immediately while the 15" would become available around April. A small gap between the announcement and actual availability wouldn't hurt too much (after all they do the same thing with iPhones every year). Announcing them at the June event is also a possibility but it seems like Apple likes to use the June event to concentrate on software, not hardware.

Also, the longer Apple waits, the more their competitors get ahead.

People here have been saying the same thing for EVERY event in the past few months and have been proven wrong. I mean, did you guys not see people in this thread thinking apple would seriously silently update the MBPs if Intel announced the chips at CES..?

The June announcement seems to be the best bet - announcing the new MBPs with the new OS. The March event will be about AW 2, iPad Air 3, AND the 4 inch phone. Why would Apple also lump something so important and big as the redesigned Macs when there are three other products being announced?

Of course, most here are saying March because that's what they want or are looking for some form of reaffirmation...

It won't go past June though that is pretty much certain, students want their laptops before the school year starts and June is generally a good time so they can enjoy it over the summer.

I don't know about that.
I initially thought March/June 2016 would be the time frame for Skylake MBP.

Now I am thinking maybe it will be in September. Nothing to base it on except just my gut feeling. I hope they prove me wrong, but with AMD Pascal due in 2Q of 2016, my guess is 15" Skylake MBP will more likely be September 2016.

I am completely lost among:
Skylake
Kaby Lake
Canyon Lake?
Other Lakes That I Am Missing?
Skull Canyon?
Iris Pro?
Core M?
Core U?
More that I am forgetting right now?

Is there a post/thread/website where I could find an explanation of what all these things are and which one should I lust after? ;)

Since the rest wasn't nice enough to elaborate, I'll take a shot.

Skylake, Kaby Lake and Canyon Lake are Intel's processor architectures. Skylake is the most recent one while the others are coming in the future. Previous ones where known as Broadwell, Haswell,... You can recognize them by the model number; an i5-6500 is Skylake, an i5-5500 is Broadwell,...

Next up there is Skull Canyon, as far as I'm aware Skull Canyon is Intel's new NUC which is basically a small compact computer. The reason it gets mentioned here? Well it's going to have a 45watt Skylake processor with Iris Pro graphics. And that brings us to the next buzzword.

Iris Pro! This is Intel's most powerful integrated graphics card. Apple has always used Iris Pro Graphics in their Macbooks. So whenever Intel releases a Skylake processor with this kind of graphics we're pretty much golden because Apple will use these and will normally release new Macbooks.

But wait, what does it have to do with Skull Canyon? Well there aren't a lot rumors or facts about when these Macbook-suitable cpu's will be released by Intel. But since the new NUC from Intel will be using the same kind of CPU it becomes the best pointer we have. There were already leaks that it will be coming soon, so this gives us hope about Intel releasing the other Skylake CPU's with Iris Graphics Pro! Yay for us!

Last but not least, Core M, U, K, H,... These letters are just an indication for the purpose of the processor.
  • M stands for mobile processor
  • U means Ultra-low power, ideal for ultra-books
  • K processors are unlocked (overclocking)
  • H stands for High performance graphics, which is our favorite because it will be ideal for the Macbook Pro!
I hope this helps! ;)

So I got my rMBP today and I can't believe I messed around with mediocre feeling laptops my whole life.

My $1300 ASUS laptop feels like straight trash, like a dinosaur compared to this laptop (even though spec wise its roughly the same as this rMBP).

Is this truly real? Can't believe I held out on Macbooks for this long.

LOL... I can relate! I finally purchased a 15' rMBP 2 weeks ago, which I am prepping to be returned back to the Apple store...hoping the Skylake version comes out soon!

But,yea.. I thought about replacing the rMBP with a windows laptop and faster processor, BUT I can't bring myself to do it!!! At the worst case if Skylake doesn't arrive, I will just invest in a 27" 5k iMac since portability isn't really a big issue with me. :)

... why would you return a perfectly fine laptop to wait for one that hasn't been announced yet and might not be released (or announced) "soon"?

I know.. I know... I'm hedging that the 2016 rMBP will be released in Spring, and I know I'll be kicking myself for having the "old" model! :(

I'm still going back and forth over returning it, I have until 1/9 (14th day), at the worst case I may just ask for a Best Buy price match $200 less...

AMD's new Architecture is Polaris, NVidia's is Pascal.

With that said, the fact Apple is now using AMD and AMD's new GPU Architecture focused on mobile won't be released until later in the year also has me thinking that we won't see the 2016 MacBook Pro until June at the earliest.

Apple will probably update the 12" rMB, MBAs, and 13" rMBP and wait until mid-2016 for the 15" again. It's so frustrating how components for the 15" are on such crappy release cycles. The 15" feels like it's been trapped on Haswell forever.

My bad on incorrectly naming AMD's GPU.

I agree

According to BGR:

"
Products that may not get the upgrade treatment this year

Some products that may not receive any notable upgrades this year include the iMac, the Retina MacBook Pro, the iPad Pro, the Apple TV, and the Mac Pro."

o_Oo_O

June ? You guys are high off your arse if you think Apple is going to wait that long with the mbp refreshes. The 15' chips are getting released in the NUC's probably by the end of January.

Let's just pray they go for Nvidia maxwell RIP OpenCL

Just think of that sweet sweet skylake, nvme, maxwell and TB3 :3

Don't be afraid. It actually makes sense when you replace "Air" with "Pro". It's pointless to make the Air slimmer, because then you'd get a MB. I predict they kill the Air and just use the MB and the MBP

So yeah, it'll be probably June.

Apple may be preparing to introduce a revamped MacBook Pro at next year's Worldwide Developers Conference, according to Taiwan's Economic Daily News [Google Translate]. If Apple holds true to recent history, WWDC 2016 would be held in June, and the today's report claims the new MacBook Pro will launch in the third quarter, which corresponds to the July–September timeframe.

The new MacBook Pro is said to take on a slimmer design and arrive in 13-inch and 15-inch sizes, but it is unclear whether an 11-inch model will also be included. The slimmer design will be enabled by "fully redesigned" internal components across the board, and Apple is reportedly currently working with its suppliers to develop these new components.

[...]

Economic Daily News has a hit-or-miss track record with Apple rumors, so caution should be observed with today's claims until or unless other supporting rumors surface in the coming months.

Another suggestion my intel source is indeed right... Skull Canyon to be released Q2 '16, some specs revealed now. Some still embargo.

http://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/skull-canyon-nuc-ces-2016/

Source says top dollar laptop brands may announce devices carrying the chip around march game show already.
[doublepost=1452213517][/doublepost]New source: skull canyon's i7, besides featuring Iris Pro 580, will have max 32gb ddr4 @2133mhz.
[doublepost=1452214698][/doublepost]Insider reports next MBP max out is equipped with i7-6920HQ.

lol@everyone saying June. I mean, look my guess is as good as anyone elses but the absolute longest time for a rMBP refresh was 280 days, which for us will be February 23. Does anyone really seriously think Apple is going to wait 379 days until, say, June 1st to release a new MBP? Now some are saying SEPTEMBER? Apple has never waited an entire year to update the MBP even if its a minor spec bump.

Q2 seems plausible. Both the i7 iris pro and the AMD Polaris line is available then. The Macbook Pro isn't that important anymore.

The 13" has already exceeded the previous longest; now 304 days and counting (will be a full year if it comes out in March). If Apple delays the 15" in the same way, that makes it a June release.

Here we go again... another new poster claiming to have an inside source. The i7-6920HQ has Intel HD 530 graphics, so why in the world would Apple use that chip?
