It can just as easily be said to be a gimmick. A lot of it will depend on the amount of software that supports it and how well their implementation is. Same goes for Apples LED strip.

At $3000 the Surface Studio has a huge uphill battle.

The 5K iMac starts at literally half the price, and it still has a slightly higher resolution screen (14.7M pixels vs 13.5M)

I'm interested in the specs, I've missed the beginning of the keynote. Is it a 15W Kaby Lake in that thing?

No, sadly, the MS Dial is in its very essence innovation, the thin screen is gorgeous and I was critical on Apple making the iMac thinner, get visually the Studio looks wonderful with its thinness.

For tomorrow, we'll get a skylake based laptop with an OLED bar. I hope I'm wrong, because I really want Apple to return to its roots of gorgeous designed products
I agree.. and I think what Satya said on stage right now hits the mark for Apple, the part about how most innovation has been towards consumption.

I'm surprised MS is even capable of positioning themselves as the creative company that's for the 'crazy ones'. Sorry to bring this up but Steve really would be pissed right now..

if i got it from the presentation, the Studio has a 3:2 screen ratio, iMac is 16:10

quad core i7, so i assume it's a 45W chip

I own a 5K iMac but for creative professionals it as a fraction of the functionality of what Microsoft have just announced. You would need to buy a Cintiq to go with an iMac to get the same functionality. It would cost you more than $3000.

Yep, that's what I've noticed too. With Apple, it's consumption, consumption, consumption. The Pencil was a good step in the direction of creation, but it'd be nice to see some more emphasis on creation for the Mac. Hopefully they'll talk about it in the event tomorrow. Tim better have been taking notes ;)

Cutting. Meanwhile the Mac Pro is three years old..

So it's a Skylake?

Yes.

Yea, Microsoft really is the new taste-maker of creative computer products. I have some use for the Surface Studio, but probably not enough to purchase it. That said, hell of a product for some people I'm sure.

Edit: Oops I was looking at the 21" iMac. But still well over $1000 more expensive than the 27"

But I do agree the monitor silhouette and design itself looks good. I'll be in the market for a new screen soon and If MS sold only the screen portion that I could put on a VESA mount I might actually buy a MS product again.

Which iMac is cheaper? The ones that bring a 5400 rpm hard drive?

With an unbiased opinion tho everyone needs to congratulate Microsoft for being the only guys who are trying to make hardware that is excepcionally well built and minimalist, just like Apple.

Dell sometimes is refered to as the "windows mac" because of the xps line. I believe surface is the "windows mac".
Honestly, Apple have had it too easy for too long, almost 0 competition for years (or let's say they were years beyond their competition). The heat from Microsoft is good for all of us, lovers and haters. It'll force Apple to up their game, which they surely can. Their game is to hold off as long as possible, but those days are over.

I'm rooting for Microsoft. I think tomorrow's event is going to look boring by comparison. Apple needs a swift kick in the behind.
Microsoft's event WAS the kick ;)

Up until the Microsoft Studio, I really never understood why people wanted a thinner monitor. IMO, most of the ones you see today have just enough width to make it bearable. Any thinner and you're sacrificing too much functionality over form.

Also impressed with the Surface. If it really lasts 16 hours, then that's a great look. Aside from the MacBook Air, Lenovo ThinkPads, and XPS 13", I haven't really seen a laptop that can last more than 10 hours. Hopefully the batteries in the MBP's and MBA tomorrow are great.

there probably is a reason the apple event is tomorrow and after the microsoft event... to overshadow them with better innovations.. i hope

When did they say it was quad-core?
This is all I found so far:

For $2,999, you’ll get 1TB of storage and 8GB of RAM (and NVIDIA GeForce GTX 965M 2GB GPU GDDR5 memory), together with an Intel i5 chip. An extra 8GB of RAM and a processor bump to Intel Core i7 will cost you $500 extra, while the high-end Surface Studio featuring a 2TB drive and 32GB of RAM (with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M 4GB GPU GDDR5 memory) is priced at $4,199.

There was a guy on this forum complaining about base RAM in Macs being to low. Will you please stand up?
