For me it's not even the redesign as much as it is the components inside and the feature set. TB3 and USB-C namely. Also, the Iris Pro graphics in Broadwell alone are nearly as poweful as the 750m was, so the chipset upgrades are/will be substantial.

I don't get it, USB C is just a USB/Thunderbolt port you have 2 each of those on the current mac.

The only bonus to TB3 will be the ability to run a 5K screen.

USB C just won't work without an adaptor for all your current peripherals so I don't see why you'd want on at the moment anyway. Sure in 2 years time these will be a very useful properties currently it means nothing.

And again, TB3 will also support eGPUs. Officially.

So the 'Waiting for Broadwell' thread has been replaced with 'Waiting for Skylake'? Does that mean the general sentiment is that the rumors are indeed most likely true that Apple is skipping Broadwell in favor of a Skylake MBP as has been predicted?

Yeah ... No mods note to explain? Did we miss the article announcing Apple skipping Broadwell for the rMBP15? It looks a bit premature o_O
Now, on the other hand the rMBP13 is already on Broadwell, so it makes sense to have this thread as a sticky too.
Or, these threads are making sense in mods' eyes only until the chips are presented/available? And we should disseminate posts in every possible new threads after? Moderation is very special in these forums.

Well, link for reference: https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/waiting-for-broadwell-mbp-thread.1622520/page-85#post-21390985

I do not expect Apple to skip Broadwell with the 15" MBP. My guess is that last month's refresh was the freshest that Apple could make the 15" MBP with surety of enough stock to meet back-to-school demand. In about October, Apple should have access to enough suitable Broadwell chips to release a Broadwell 15" MBP in time for the Xmas/Hanukah/Kwanza/Festivus shopping season. Then after the Chinese New Year shopping season, Apple can release a Skylake MBP.

I think this may be an accurate assessment except that Skylake MBP release may be in June of 2016.

Me neither. Apple showed with new 15'' one to be super conservative about macbook pro schedule. Since they already released 2 models in a year (remember ivy bridge/haswell in 2013), I'm almost 100% sure they will go with broadwell first, probably for christmas season. Then Skylake in 2016 for sure.

Don't get your hopes high.

I got a 2012 15-inch Macbook Pro with Retina Display and I'm waiting for Skylake and USB-3C and Thunderbolt 3 in one port. I'm hoping by then there won't be any more UI lag on any level. Though a big part of me thinks its a OS problem more than a hardware problem.

Apple usually stops just short of what I'd want hardware-wise, so since I'm hoping for Skylake, I assume they'll refresh with Broadwell.

Dell just launched their XPS 15 with 4k bezeless display and Skylake H. Looks pretty sweet, and it looks like the release is in September. I'm probably expecting that Apple gets a redesign done for their Skylake laptops in November. June 2016 is way too long to wait for apple, considering 47W and 15W are coming in September. I'd imagine that Apple won't want to be left behind by their competition as the XPS 15 is the closest competitor to the Macbook Pro 15 inch.

I don't see any mention of Skylake H but looks like the pressure is on Apple now as Dell and a few others just released new notebook designs.

Wait a minute, did you say a mass produced Skylake powered laptop is coming this September?....2015!? That would mean Skylake would indeed be fully available to manufacturers, including Apple, just as Intel's roadmaps have been showing.

Well, using the fact that Microsoft name dropped 5 skylake laptops in taiwan a couple days ago, the fact that 90% of premium 15 inch laptops are quad core, and the leaked roadmap from intel (http://www.thinkscopes.com/2015/05/...-plattform-overview-and-thinkpad-speculation/) I think its safe to say that Skylake, and Skylake H is coming in September. We still don't know the status of 28W processors though. I personally think that Apple will change the rMBP 13 to a 15W CPU and discontinue the air.

From the link, "It is rumored that the 15 W Skylake U CPUs will be also available with GT3e iGPUs." say what?! I'll take that in the 13 with a redesign in a heart beat.

Now we know that Broadwell CPUs are available I could see Apple releasing another rMBP this September/October. They may do a redesign at this point too. It is also possible Apple will release a Skylake model at this point but I think 2016 is when this will happen.

The question of ports on Skylake now is Thunderbolt3 and USB-C will be present for sure on the rMBP models. I would suspect the MagSafe port will be replaced by a USB-C port allowing for a power cable to be attached either side of a rMBP.

The question is which other ports will be kept on a rMBP. I hope Apple keeps a single HDMI port and a SDXC card slot.

One side should keep the USB, HDMI, SDXC ports. The other side of the rMBP should be redesigned and the four current ports Magsafe, Thunderbolt, Thunderbolt, USB3 will likely be slimmed down to two or possibly three USB-C ports.

Does anyone believe Apple will keep USB-A ports on the next design version of the rMBP?

Hey guys! I've been following these forums for a while and I've been stuck as to whether or not I want to pick up one of these new 15" rMBPs so I thought I would ask everyone for opinions about my usage case.

I'm a current 3rd year undergraduate (finals are this week so soon to be 4th year :D) in nuclear engineering, so as you would guess, a good computer is very important to me. Can't live without office, MATLAB, solidworks, photoshop, etc. so I definitely need a good dGPU for all my purposes. I'm currently using a late 2008 MBP which is slow as hell and is literally crapping out on me while I do my normal workflow.

Since summer is here, I don't absolutely need a new MBP right now, but there's no way I could survive another year on my current piece of crap. My concern is that the dGPU isn't exceptional and I'm wondering how it may hold up for the next 5+ years I use it. Also I would be paying top dollar for this machine, and obviously I want my money's worth. My next term starts in late September/October, so I'm thinking that buying a new machine at that time and having to spend time setting it up may not be a smart decision.

Also, a lot of the apps I use would compute heavy, but isn't Maxwell better than GCN 1.0 for that? I've been a bit confused as to why this AMD chip would be considered superior, unless everyone got their information wrong and its not GCN 1.0/Cape Verde. Anyone got some insight or found some information I missed?

What do you guys think? Should I bite the bullet and pick one of these up?

EDIT: oh and I should mention, I posted in this thread because I'm wondering whether or not I should be waiting for dGPU/iGPU upgrade from skylake. Its on topic I swear ;)

You definitely should. Skylakes will only be released September/October at earliest, and that's not talking about the Macbook which will probably come Q1 2016..maybe..

So yea if you decided on the Macbook as the laptop to go you should buy it now. September, October, November, December, January... that would be a lot of time spent on the old mac :p

Here's my advice..

I've been preaching for people to wait for Skylake but your situation is unique.

I would do this. Wait at least until the end of September (first few weeks of school are usually not that intensive).

By that time we should have heard about an iPhone event and rumors about October products. Also you could see shipping times slipping for new MacBooks (IF there'll be a refresh).

At the end of September/Start of October, buy the current Macbook Pro with dGPU. I've heard that the return window in the US is 30 days (I don't know if you're there). That means you can use it for a whole month, so whole of October.

If for some reason near the end of October there are no signs of a new MBP coming, keep it or return it.

If there are rumors we're getting new stuff. Return it!

In regards to your dGPU questions I'm no help.

I think Skylake just got more real. At Computex, Asus had a demo unit of the N552VX (part of their 15 inch N series multimedia laptops with Quad Core i7 and mid-range graphics) that had a "6th gen" Core i7. While no one was able to pull a CPU model number off it, it had DDR4. Their estimated release date was Q3 2015, so Skylake may be still on track (though I just can't see Broadwell with a 3 month life).

I just did a quick Google search and it seems there are many websites with a title saying it's a 6th gen Skylake powered laptop available this summer. Problem for me is the articles I've come across are in a foreign language so I can't say for sure what the specs are.

Even the Iris Pro 5200 integrated graphics in the mid-2015 15" MBP is vastly faster the discrete graphics in the 2008 MBP. With or without the dGPU, a mid-2015 15" MBP will serve you well for your remaining two years of undergraduate studies.

It's looking better and better everyday. I found the ASUS you were talking about: ASUS N552VX.

It has a 6th generation (Skylake) Intel Core i7 with the chipset being Intel HM170.

The weirdest thing about this laptop: it has a CD/DVD drive on the (right) side and the integrated GPU is written as Intel HD Graphics 530 (it also has a dGPU Nvidia GeForce GTX 950M).

Check the laptop out on youtube here:

For specs see the 02:04 mark.

You can bet those first manufacturers that get their Skylake powered laptops out for sale will be feverishly touting everything the new era 6th gen powered machines are capable of (now and in future models). If your a company still 'featuring' 4th and even 'now old' (in comparison) 5th generation technology powered laptops your going to look out of date and less desirable, especially if those other companies new gen laptops are much less expensive.
