Might be right about that AYNOM. I'm just trying to stay optimistic since my 7 year old MBP is on it's last leg :(

I'm in the same situation as you. But, I would most likely bite on rMBP 15 in. Broadwell update. Since I keep my technology for a long time, I'd prefer the newest "tried and true" over a radical 1st generation redesign.

Skylake, DDR4, better Igpu, newer ports(and hopefully not less) and a possible redesign(maybe borderless display like the new dell xps 13?), i would say that it sounds nice. I hope they will launch them @ late 2015 but my gut is saying that macbook airs will be updated first this year and macbook pro's will be updated early 2016.

I also want to ask the followers of this thread this;

What new features do you think will we have with the new design?

Some people see Touch ID sure as death. Thinner goes without saying, I also believe we might see the new layered li-ion battery design to make the most with the new thinner case. I'm not sure about the borderless design. As an Apple tradition I also think real power users will be disappointed in terms of performance and ports, at least on paper right after the announcement.

What do you guys think? Any rumours I might have missed?

You're only going to get DDR4 in the quad core snd desktop versions. For this reason, I don't expect we will see it in any of Apple's products until the next refresh. It would not fit with their economies of scale two have to buy two different types of RAM when the differences are fairly negligible.

Would you guys buy the 13" MBPR now or wait for Skylake? Do you guys think a Skylake 13" would arrive sometime this year? About the redesign, how long would it take for USB-C to become widely used? I don't want to feel like I'm buying something that's going to be obsolete in a year or two time.

Well, i admit that i didn't follow the rumors and news very closely but i thought skylake will support ddr3 and ddr4 out of the box, as architecture. Anyways, my assumption was based that Apple always marketed themselves as a company which push hardware forward but i also admit that yes, differences between ddr3 and 4 are not that great in terms of performance but i guess ddr4 can help the battery.

This is a never ending question, the answer can be simple, if you need the laptop buy it now and sell it when the new one comes out with a "small" loss or if you can wait and want to wait, then wait. The chances for a 2015 release i would say are 50/50.

Could be wrong but, wasn't there a link around here to an article showing Asus releasing a new Skylake powered laptop in Sep/Oct? If so, why are there still debates about when Skylake is coming?

Uhm, how do you derive "March 2016" from "September 2015"?
Because the MBP is using H-class CPU's.

Only the 6700HQ comes out in September. The 6820-6920HQ are for October-November. So it's simply more likely for Skylake to come in Q1 2016 and the late 2015 refresh (if there is one) would just be Broadwell.

I've read previously that Skylake will support both DDR3 and DDR4 on the Mainstream parts. Not the E or EP parts which will be DDR4 only. Those are the kind used in the Mac Pro while the mainstream parts are the kind used in Mac Mini, MacBook Pro, iMac etc

so it'll be up to Apple and I'm sure they'll use DDR4 as it uses less power than DDR3 does, even the low powered DDR3.

I thought that Skylake U process were the ultra low power chips for fanless netbooks. I figured they'd be using the H series since U will only be dual core.

Because skylake isn't one chip. It's a family or generation of chips. They're also known as 6th generation Intel core CPUs. Within one generation, different chips are released at different times.

Should I be choosing a Thunderbolt soundcard, a Firewire 400 or 800, a USB card, or even maybe wait and see if USB-C soundcards come out in time for the MBP release? I wanna wait until theres a new physical design as well as skylake before I upgrade from my current early 2011 15" but I'm a bit worried about the potential lack of thunderbolt and usb ports (and for live audio, firewire is a tried and tested better choice than usb anyway) and I don't wanna do dongles if I can avoid it (potential more latency and other issues)

So ideally I need something that's future proof. From what I can gather in this thread, people are not even sure the skylake redesigned bmp 15" will have TB ports, so I'm a bit concerned with what type of connection I should be going for for my next external pro sound card...Btw. this is for excuting live audio with lots of live effects running in and out of the soundcard, so stability, compatibility, low latency etc. is of upmost importance - that's why I wanna try to get a better feel for what would be best to invest in. Thanks so much

Hi Sam. So couldn't we expect the Skylake chip that Asus is going to use in their laptop to also work in other laptops too?

Are you saying that you need to buy a soundcard now but want to make sure it's compatible with a future Macbook?

If so then FireWire is not the way to go as it certainly won't be something that will work without an adapter (which you state that you want to avoid).

A Thunderbolt 2 or USB 3 soundcard should be fine, worst case scenario will probably be the need to purchase a new cable.

I'm looking to get a new soundcard asap, but might get a temporary solution and then get the "final" solution later this year/early 2016 depending on when the skylake & new design comes out. I could probably use a tb to fw adapter (i guess I could use a usb-c to fw adapter as well) but I'd obviously like to avoid that, and use a clean path..There aren't that many USB 3 soundcards on the market (yet?) for some reason..The whole market is slow to adapt, and most manufactures don't even have a tb option yet...and now that I see predictions hinting towards possibly no usb and tb ports (?) I'm confused as to what to go for. I guess a tb device would be the smartest decision but ya, I'd like some kind of premature assurance that what I do invest in, will definitely work great on the new machine. If it's too early to tell, I might have to do the temporary solution, but even that, ideally, I'd like to be a smart choice, and not just get a random usb 2 or fw400 soundcard...Kind of a weird limbo these days :S
