Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think I'll at least wait to see what is announced at WWDC (not expecting anything, mostly seeing if there are any software features added that require upcoming hardware, etc.) before I consider pulling the trigger. I may be needing a laptop to work on projects over the summer so we'll see!

I love the designs we have now, but I wouldn't be against the following: a re-design that doesn't overheat every five seconds (better heat and fan management) has USB-C ports (4 of them) one HDMI, two TB3, MagSafe charger, 32GB RAM option, and the same keyboard design (same thickness and size, but can use butterfly mechanism) Anyhoo, I'd be happy with that. :)

Hey guys, I'm torn between buying buying a 13" rMBP or waiting for Skylake. I'm currently using a 2012 MBA and am using my laptop more often and it's slowing down with not enough memory for me to install games or movies without deleting anything. Since I'm using the laptop more often now, I have noticed I'm getting more frequent headaches. Will Skylake bring a significant jump in iGPU performance? I use my laptop for college work and the occasionally playing first person shooters like TF2. Do you guys think there will be a new 13" at the end of this year? Should I wait or buy now?

I'm hoping Apple will be sensible in the ports, USB-C ports (2 & 2 w/ Thunderbolt 3-mDP), one HDMI, SDXC card reader, MagSafe.

As long as that HDMI port is 2.0, that would be perfect. If Apple reduces the number of ports, I will look elsewhere for my next laptop. The reason I get the Macbook Pro is the connectivity. Take that away with fewer ports and the value proposition is diminished.

Fall could be a good guess since some Skylake chips will be out in September + the new OSX will be released at that point too!

And what's the earliest and the latest time we could see a sky lake rmbp with a new form factor? Would you say anywhere between September 2015-March 2016?

Yes, and my gut says we will see the new MBP design alongside El Capitan release

I really need a new laptop so I think I'll buy the low end rMBP now, then give it to my wife when the redesigned Skylake one comes out and get that one. She doesn't need a dedicated GPU or anything but I need the 15" display.

What you guys think?

Skylake Macbook Pro 15' won't come until mid 2016 at the very earliest. They'll most likely put them on 13' first i reckon..

When Skylake comes out the next version Cannonlake may not have as much performance boost for some average joes...May even take several years to have another CPU that will give such a significant boost comparing to haswell/broadwell. I of course may be wrong but only time will tell.

The thing to remember is Skylake is an architecture change, Cannonlake is only a die shrink.

Performance increases to the CPU come with Architecture changes, not die shrinks. This is why Ivy Bridge and Broadwell performed the same as Sandy Bridge and Haswell.

The only thing that will be faster in Cannonlake is the GPU. As Intel has been using the die shrinks as an opportunity to increase the amount of compute cores in their iGPU's while keeping the power consumption of the GPU constant.

Now also remember Broadwell was delayed because it was difficult to shrink from 22nm to 14nm. Expect the same delays with Cannonlake going from 14nm to 10nm will be difficult.

That would mean there'll be a 15 month gap between the current version and the next one.

My opinion. There will be a silent refresh with Broadwell around October as its a straight drop in for the current machine's CPU. then a proper refresh when Skylake is fully available next year.

Around March again. Do you think it will have a new form factor?

I think there will be a refresh come Sep./Oct. which will probably include just Broadwell :(, but I'm hoping it'll be an El Capitan/Skylake double punch :D .

Unlike Broadwell, Skylake is not just the 'next best thing' once again, it, the potential new features it brings and subsequent form factor redesign amount to the next generation of the MBP. A true Tic, rather than just another toc or a simple 'update', as it just had.

Q1 2016 for Skylake. All the processors won't be rolled out until November (given that the roadmaps have been accurate w/ Broadwell, so why not Skylake).

Might be right about that AYNOM. I'm just trying to stay optimistic since my 7 year old MBP is on it's last leg :(

I'm on this ship. My 2010 MBP is giving the signals for a change after more than 5 years of happy ownership. In fact, superdrive being replaced by SSD might be the one that's keeping it alive.

However, don't we always say never buy a first ten Apple product? New design Skylake will undoubtedly have problems. Remember first gen. rMBP? I don't want to sound like a pessimist but I'm just speaking empirically. As a person who refreshes computers very rarely (6 years in this example) I can't afford issues.

I'm right there with you, emir. Except I haven't yet upgraded my mid-2009 MBP with an SSD.
I'm currently looking into the Angelbird options. Sure, I'd love a new MBP but the potential Skylake/redesign rMBP's definitely have me intrigued. Having already waited this long & not being made of money, I'd hate regretting not waiting.
