If we get a Skylake rMBP at the March event I'm fairly sure it will be for the 13" model only, and it probably won't be a redesign I'm guessing. (Much like last years upgrade).

If that happens, the redesigned rMBP will most likely be released as a 15" model at WWDC in June. Redesigned 13" model in Q4 '16/Q1 '17.

I have to disagree and I'm going to tell you why.

When rMBP was first introduced 10 years ago, the first model was the 15'' and then three months later the 17''. Now 13'' is the new 15'' ... and 15'' the new 17'' also they don't have any problem to release new product out of WWDC (Macbook 12) that's not a statement, but a precedent worth looking at.

The rMBP 13 is newer (broadwell) so just updating it to Skylake isn't going to mean a big difference in performance numbers (they like to advertise that), as result it won't atract as many costumers as if they sold it as a new machine: Skylake + redesign (even though if they just add color options and USB-C).

Kaby Lake availability is uncertain. Also with your release scenario they'll end with 15 (the top machine) with Skylake and the 13 inch with the newer Kaby Lake. I'm not sure they really care about this, but won't be as neat has having both new design with the same architecture, and start a logical update roadmap from now on.

Releasing a redesigned 13 inch model will hype the hell out of mac fans waiting for 15 rMBP at WWDC (assuming they can't release the 15 on March too). Personal opinion: it won't have dGPU, Apple doesn't like to depend and buy from other manufactures and Iris Pro 580 seems to be very capable of surpass the actual AMD R9 M370X. So I say (wish): Both in March!

Lets wait and see :D

Remember that Apple has only staggered their updates of the 13" & 15" one time, which was last year (I guess you can also count the initial release of both products). But there were three updates that were all on the same day. I think they'll do their best to update both machines at the same time.

Any refresh of the 15" just doesn't make sense, considering they could have done that any time between June 2015 and now. Waiting for Skylake just do to a refresh with it doesn't make sense unless there was another reason to do so (redesign with new ports).

Have the 45W / 15" chips been released in any devices yet? The 28W / 13" chips are out there already, right?

Has anyone seen this ad by Microsoft that openly challenges the Macbook Pro?

At this point I really do hope that Apple comes out with a Macbook Pro that absolutely blows it's competitors away (I'm all for healthy competition). You know, take the words out of their mouth.

The anticipation. IS. REAL.

Not really... I am not so excited about Kaby Lake... We can discuss about that in new thread if you want... :)

I'll be honoured to see you there guys!

Haha ok! I didn't say anything then. I'm fine with skylake and hope it will last 4 years at least, we will see us by then

The music is similar to one from an Apple event as well.

I have a feeling the next big thread today will be what the invite really means.

If we dont start seeing stocks lower or shipping times slip from Apple soon I think we already have our March release answer. Macbook's dont have huge production lead times, so its unlikely they have huge stock sitting in a warehouse. They produce what they need, so with stock and shipping still normal thats a bad sign.

Also contingent of stock/inventory of parts like the CPU.

What were the temperatures during your play?

Did not record. I can some temperature data later if you want though.

Maybe they will be TB3 displays with the usb-C connector, launching along side all new MBP with usb-C/TB3

I think I agree with you that we may see the 13" now and the 15" later. Though I don't think there will be a 13" upgrade q4'16/q1'17.. kaby lake won't be ready. I don't think they would redesign with the same internals

........and we just reached 6,000 posts in this thread.

Another dubious milestone for the rMBP......

Apple is waiting until this thread gets to 10,000 before releasing the new MacBook Pros

I do not think 45W/35W chips are available, last I heard they got delayed to Q2'16 but that was for desktop mini PCs with iris pro 580. I don't think iris 580 is available anywhere else, nor have we had benchmarks leak. And the 28W chips are available, I have one lol. But I think they are only available in limited quantities, that could be changing quickly though

Absolutely, but im considering that together. If Apple were about to produce a new machine, they wouldnt have tens of thousands of CPU's sitting on shelves. There entire inventory chain is about as on demand as they can make it.

Hmm something just struck me. The Tim Cook-era Apple seems to like as much overlap between products as possible, in terms of market segments but also in terms of price points. Case in point: Macbook Air lines persisting despite the rMB being as direct a replacement to the MBA as it's possible to be, or the new iPhone SE (component re-use and presumably few design changes, just a smaller form factor), not to mention the usual iPhone 6S/6/5s/5c overlaps and the same situation with the iPad.

So i wonder.

What if Apple plans to do the same thing for the MBP line? It's already kept the non-retina MBP from 2012 running. Maybe it'll echelon its rMBP offering the same way:
  • Old design of rMBP - silver only, broadwell/haswell procs
  • Redesigned: aesthetic changes + Skylake procs + potential other differentiators?
Just a thought

The reason why there has been delays is because Intel screwed, 14nm process for GPUs was delayed, and because Apple is in transition to new technology(Metal). Nothing more, nothing less.

I have a question about flash storage. When Apple last updated the 15" in May of 2015, what did they change in regards to "faster flash storage?" What's the measure of that speed? I'm aware that more storage means faster overall, but what did Apple change? Also, how did they get longer battery life?

Last year we didn't see shipping times slip till 3 days before the spring forward event. So it's not a bad sign until we get much closer to the 21st.

Here you go, I believe the big change was PCIe based flash storage

Here's a rundown of Intel processor launch dates and the subsequent rMBP launch with those chips:

Jan Feb Mar | Apr May June | Jul Aug Sep | Oct Nov Dec
  1. Original - Ivy Bridge 15": Q2'12, June 11th, 2012 (last month in launch quarter)
  2. Original - Ivy Bridge 13": Q2'12, October 23rd, 2012 (first month, two quarters later)
  3. Update 1 - faster Ivy Bridge 15": Q3'12, February 13th, 2013 (second month, two quarters later)
  4. Update 1 - faster Ivy Bridge 13": Q1'13, February 13th, 2013 (second month in launch quarter)
  5. Update 2 - Haswell 15": Q3'13, October 22nd, 2013 (first month, one quarter later)
  6. Update 2 - Haswell 13": Q3'13, October 22nd, 2013 (first month, one quarter later)
  7. Update 3 - faster Haswell 15": Q3'14, July 29th, 2014 (first month in launch quarter)
  8. Update 3 - faster Haswell 13": Q3'14, July 29th, 2014 (first month in launch quarter)
  9. Update 4 - Broadwell 13": Q1'15, March 29th, 2015 (third month in launch quarter)
  10. Update 4 - same Haswell 15": Q3'14, May 19th, 2015 (not applicable)
  11. Update 5 - Skylake 15": Q1'16, March release: third month in launch quarter | June release: third month, one quarter later
  12. Update 5 - Skylake 13": Q3'15, March release: third month, two quarters later | June release: third month, three quarters later
This is based on what Intel says on ARK, so I know launch quarter is still an estimation compared to actual releases in machines. You can see Apple is relatively quick to adopt new processors, hitting the launch quarter, or very close to it, almost every time. Given these trends, the 15" could come in March or June. The 13" is definitely late given its history, but I'm not sure Q3'15 is entirely accurate for the launch of those Skylake chips.

Edit: I pulled the launch quarters from ARK. I used the entry level chip for each machine to gather the information.

apple noob here, I'm planning on getting a 13in rmbp this March, i7/16gb ram/256gb. I've read that the fan gets turned on much more often with the i7 and the computer itself gets louder because of this. Can anyone confirm/ link a good source about this? Also, how will I know that I'm ordering the latest rmbp off the apple website when they're released?(specs just say intel i5 processor) Thanks in advance!

Those Intel launch times are not accurate at all. And does not shed much information. For example: Q3'15 for skylake. Many skylake chips are still not available/released.
Some skylake chips will not be available until Q4'16 or Q1'17
