nothing is available for the 13" though...

The Vaio Z uses the 28w chips appropriate to the 13" MBP and they've been out since late February. Someone here was posting benchmarks with their new unit. I think the chance for a 13" update during the march keynote is very high barring any other issues.

Yep, recently launched, but nothing publicly available. Though I do miss the days of when Apple had early access to processors. A bit surprised they're left out in the cold with every other manufacturer.

Intel demoed the Skull Canyon NUC early January back at CES and shortly thereafter updated ARK to reflect the Skylake-H parts with launched status, but didn't want to talk too much about it until GDC. So next week (Monday?) that will be the first product to be announced with it. Then the Xeon parts were shown in an earlier part, already in the hands of OEMs.

So there is some movement, next week we should see a lot of noise and finally closing with (hopefully) the announcement on next monday.

Buy some popcorn and watch '90 minutes with Apple", its latest news, security politics, new building, new wristbands, spec updates for ipads, goodbye. One more thing: iphone 5SE and new IOS 9.3 for it and other software updates have been released now! Enjoy the day...

I think that's somewhat too pessimistic.. they at least won't pull a "one more thing" with information that is already publicly available (iOS 9.3) ^^

There are no skylake quad cores released (w/ 580 gpu).

Those chips are officially launched now though. And it's weather Apple feels gracious enough to out the highest end Skylakes in its laptop refresh. I would still much prefer a dedicated GPU especially with the retina resolution. If they don't do a case redesign then they will keep the DGPU I would think.

Then again that's if Apple updates its laptops in the first place this month...

Click on specification, Intels official status is launched:

I don't think you'll find too many people using it as high end laptops with Intels highest end CPUs tend to have DGPUs also. So to them they will probably stick with the 530 I would of thought?

All I can say about this wait for skylake is that I can't wait more than a few more weeks. I'm still working on my '07 white MB because my '06MBP is now shattered. I have access to a borrowed '12 iMac, but doesn't help me for most of my work, which is not at a desk.
I have practically given up ever seeing a quad based mac mini to return; which stinks because home is where I use Logic and Final Cut, and now I really need a new laptop badly. Come April 1, if there is nothing new available, hello Asus or Acer (and a few hundred dollars in my pocket for if/when the mini ever gets a real update). I am not buying a tricked out '2014 laptop to use for the next 4-6 years. (I swear, the grumpy old man in me is really wondering how much all this consumer grade ARM junk, that I love, is straining the Intel/Apple relationship -- the roll out of Haswell/Broadwell/Skylake has been a clusterfook imnsho)

I have been looking at Windows laptops like Alienware etc and whilst nice, powerful etc. I just don't think I could bring myself to use Windows everyday on my own computer! Work yes but personal no. I like OSX too much.
Perhaps I'll end up with an iMac?

For a laptop? I would think you are correct.

DEll's XPS 15 specs are amazing and the price not too shabby , it's pretty much everything the macbook pro refresh should be , but like you I don't if I'm ready to go back to windows ....

And another thing, USB-C? Personally, I would like at least one C port. I have been eyeing the MB also; I really dig the 12" size. But I am a CPU hog and I hate lag, so it has been interesting to see the benchmarks of the M compared to the i5, which is promising; and my hoggyness is why I still run Mountain Lion, Snow Leopard and Windows 7 on my remaining laptops. Can't even bring myself to install O' Capitan my Capitan on my borrowed iMac.

Considering that the event will take place at 10 am of the 21 of March, if I've done my math correctly...

...we have to wait just for 245 hours.
Which are 14700 minutes.
Which are 882000 seconds.
I'll begin to count: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5....

Could work the same way as counting sheep, for the people who will become borderline restless after the march event if Apple doesn't update the rMBP's.

Status Announced is what it says. Did you bother to check? :)

The Vaio Z flip is released and is using the chips that the 13" MBP will use. It's the first laptop released with the 28w Skylake chips, has been out for a few weeks now.

Yep you're of course correct. Like most people i have been following this closely in hopes of Benchmarks etc. However point still stands. They are not available in volumes. Might hopefully change after mondays GDC and will make us all happy on the 21st!
