Looks like I was wrong. This was demo of bigger GPU, Polaris 10. At CES they have shown Polaris 11 which is smaller, and less powerful.

So this is supposed to be 232 mm2 125W GPU. Still impressive.

The question is will Apple implement or already have done it so on their new rMBP?

Did the prices of 2014 macbooks drop drastically before the March 2015 event?

Not really recall, but I believe they did that last time and almost everytime they were announcing new keynotes.

Well if that's the priority then why not just get a cheap mid-2012 - 2014 with external graphics?

I just can't see the reason in spending $2000 for a laptop that would give you just as good performance as one you can spend $1200-$1500 on.

The point is that that thing is more than $600 off the retail price and its brand new. Also because it has the longest battery life. 256gb more space and external graphics for $200 more is better

Why offer a top end at all? It's obviously about choice. A slightly better performing machine for a slightly higher price.

New in the box - Yes
New technology - No

It's that cheap because its old hardware. The laptop itself is over a year old. The internals even more than that. A 30% degradation in price over 2 years is to be expected in most technology. It's $600 off retail because it's worth $600 less now, honestly.

That decrease applies because of new hardware releases. In case you hadn't noticed, these Mac have no replacement yet. Even when the replacement comes in (which we don't know when), the new models will come in at the full retail price ($2500 for this particular one). So this is still a really good deal.

The decrease in the retail price from the manufacturer (Apple) directly is because of new releases, yes. The decrease in the actual technological value is determined by the market as a whole. Just because something is on sale does not mean it is a good value. Once the new machines are released the value of this machine will drop much more dramatically than if you were to wait and invest in the newest model. This would not have been the case is Apple would have kept up-to-date on the internals of the machine over the past 1-2 years. Then again, there is a lot of money in the glowing symbol on the back alone.

Are there many people here that would buy the new rMBP if it's just a spec bump rather than a redesign?

I was just looking at the current rMBP in comparison to the new rMB. I mean it truly seems like the redesign might bring some really great new features like those bezels  Imagine such a powerful machine designed in a similar way as the rMB (let's assume Apple will get it right). To be fair I think a sole spec bump for the current design would be a massive mistake. Why update a line that people know is about to become, well, pretty outdated looking? A redesign must surely happen sometime in 2016. I guess the real question is when that 'about' really is, but people must surely be getting impatient.

I sincerely hope that it is very, very soon. Preferably next Monday. I, for one, am praying.

Sigh nothing of substance at all though a nice new GPU that I can never afford.

Maybe tomorrow or Wednesday.

You don't know what i've done to my custom built PC ;)

And I am a producer too! Next year I am going to study electronic music at the conservatory in Haarlem.

I have Ableton crash on me sooo many times, as the program unfortunately can't handle big RAM loads.
But windows has never caused a problem

Well, I don't doubt your "custom built PC" is cappable of many things, I'm just talking from my experience, and I could give you more real examples from mine and some mates using Windows for live sets, but that wouldn't change your mind. Nor I pretend to do that, I'm just happy on Mac after some disasters with Windows, so you should be too with your Windows if you haven't had any one.

By the way, my Ableton crashes didn't come from Ableton itself or its functions, but from conflicting third party vst's. Which kind of crashes do you have?

And glad to see a mate producer here!

The Apple logo plays a huge part of that value. Simply put, Apple laptops hold more of their residual value then their equivalent Windows counterparts. In part this is because Windows laptops have to contend with newer model releases from the same manufacturer as well as releases by other manufacturers. With Apple there are fewer available replacements (considering OS X machines only), even more so with the 15" rMBP.

Completely unrelated but sort of related.. Acer announces its Graphics dock, which some websites have erroneously placed it as as a GTX 940M but it is actually a GTX 960M. It's running on their Aspire 12 S something or another tablet with Intel Core M over Thunderbolt 3.

Here is the website, it's in Dutch but the images look like they are Acer press release images and they are in English.

A Core M running a GTX 960M, yes I'm sure there would be bottleneck on the CPU side but still, very cool!

Me personally, I'm just looking for some TB3/USBC ports to future proof my connectivity for the next 5 3-5 years. As long as its got those I don't really need anything from a re-design. Sure going to 4k would be nice (as I run my machine at 1920x1200, so a 4k would give a better retina look), but it's not really anything that would change my day to day use. There's not much else that I see out there worth waiting for. I suppose I would be regretting the purchase if they did a spec bump at next weeks event and the re-design at WWDC included something unique like TouchID. But if it's just a smaller/cosmetic change then I don't care for it.

For sure. Not too fussed about a 'redesign', I just want that sweet Skylake PWR!! and some TB3/USB-C action.
dGPU wise, yeah, a )big?) bump there would be great, but again, not a deal breaker....my purchase, as i've mentioned before (like a broken record :p), is firmly planted in "i can not give a company full-price $'s for 2-3 year old tech."

Don't get me wrong though, a redesign would be amazing and def welcomed.

Sadly, I don't think many (if any) of these eGPU docks will be compatible with Macs.

If Apple either release a brand new rMBP 15" or a refreshed 15" with a top of the line dGPU like Polaris I might literally fall off my chair in astonishment.

Cutting edge GPUs really aren't what I've come to expect in MacBooks.
I mean look at the tragedy in the current 15".
An ageing Cape Verde GPU.

Hoping for a GPU powerhouse is a road to bitter disappointment paved with turds.

My next, immediate hopefully, MacBook will be 15" with a serviceable Skylake iGPU.
I've had it with dedicated GPUs that can't put out a constant and stable performance either due to thermal throttling or power shortage.
At least when the iGPU throttles I can tell myself "well what did you expect from an iGPU". :p

Seriously, why are the prices dropping all the sudden?

Everyone knows the Macbook Pros are due for a refresh, and now that the keynote is official it's no surprise prices are dropping like a rock. No reseller wants to be left with a ton of mid-2015 stock. B&H is STILL trying to sell their 2014 rMBPs.

This is the main driving factor in my previous purchases of Macbook Pro's. You are completely correct. I just think buying that model may be great for now; but a poor investment in the long run. Either way, it all comes down to personal preference and budget in the end.

I just picked up a 13" MBA. I'm hoping that either I'll be returning it and picking up a new MBP or discounted current gen MBP following news on Monday. Or even if there's a generous discount on the current MBA I have 30 days price protection and 14 days to return. To be honest I'm really liking the MBA too. It's a pretty significant upgrade from my 2007 iMac Core 2 Duo with its 5400rpm drive!

Although I need to migrate my stuff from Aperture to Lightroom at some point and I'll wait and see what Monday brings before investing any time in that I think.

I went the same route as you. I needed a laptop so I bought one and Best Buy allows me to return it within 30 days so hopefully the new MBP 13 will be launched in 30 days.

Slightly OT, but watching that AMD presentation reminded me that, no matter what you think of Apple, they probably do some of the best launch presentations of any company.

yea I was cringing during the CEOs t-shirt bazooka thingy, then some random incoherent ramblings about alcohol and peak productivity for half an hour. At least things sounded semi-normal when the english dude got on stage.
