Am trying not to be quite as pessimistic but there was a LOT of talk about replacing PCs and it often seemed more PC in the general sense than 'Windows computers' only.
I also can't see them just handing over the entire PC market to Microsoft. OSX is still the only truly comparable alternative to Windows. (Linux and Ubuntu are great but they are still far too niche to truly compete with Windows).
Apple either
1) abandons a hard earned and respectable share of a giant market (desktop/laptop computers)
2) allows other companies to build hardware with OSX
3) Continues as is.
Since it is probably 3 - I suspect when the new generation of Macs is announced we're going to see everything updated. The entire line from Mini to Pro. On the best technology available. It will be a fkn glorious day.
I could actually see Apple being hesitant to release new Macs because they want to make sure they are right on everything - things like connectors, making sure they don't release Skylake weeks before Kaby is released, etc. Maybe a simple comparison but I'm thinking like waiting for BluRay to beat out HDDVD before releasing your next player. Making sure you are on the cutting edge.
