Apple might have gotten tired of Intel. They could refresh the complete Mac line up with in house designed SoC's. All at once for faster adoption and at WWDC due to the implications for developers (XCode on ARM, running iOS apps on Mac).

I hope you are wrong or else I will have to buy out of the ecosystem. That is too much.

Well, I went to Best Buy today and picked up a 2015 15" rMBP (2.5 GHz / AMD dGPU).

I've got 45 days to figure out whether I'm keeping this thing or not. I've still got my 2012 15" MBP for backup (but may sell soon before it loses further value).

Why so early? 45 days will be before WWDC

Simply put - lost faith in Apple. Not putting my bet on WWDC at this point, at least until we start receiving rumors. Definitely not waiting for a fall release either.

Hopefully within the next 45 days we'll get rumors / actual news from Apple. If we do, I'll bring this rMBP back. If not, money well spent. :D

Look at the iMacs that got updated last year with Skylake. Their processor supports TB3+USB-C, yet Apple completely left that out. I would of been so pissed if I was in the iMac market at that time.

There is one positive out of this event, seeing as the rMBP didn't get an update and the cpus *should* be available so it could have just got a spec boost, it means apple is going to do a redesign in june!

Honestly, I don't know how you can assume anything. Surely something will be updated by/at WWDC but we have no idea about a redesign.

Maybe I'm just a little disappointed from today even though all the signs pointed to nothing happening.

Seems like Apple has their priorities elsewhere.

So are we skipping skylake then and just redesign with skull canyon if that chip is releasing in a month?

Seems like Apple has their priorities elsewhere.

Yep, replacing current-day PCs with their iPad Pro + smart keyboard setup.

Exactly.

And don't just take my word for it...

Here are the last few words from their iPad Pro promotional video, "It's where we believe personal computing is going."

Immediately after that (at the 60:30 mark), Timmy C. said this when he came back on stage, "We think if you already have an iPad, or whether it's time to replace that PC laptop, the iPad Pro is an amazing choice. It allows you to do so much more."

Their plan sounds pretty clear to me.

As much as I hope this theory is completely wrong, I wonder if Apple got pissed off at Intel for all the delays and decided to stop using Intel chips in all their devices.

*tinfoil hat alert*

What if Apple really was pissed at Intel? And what if they decided to go with AMD's Zen which is slated for release in Q4 this year. Mobile Zen APU in a rMBP with a polaris dGPU? This would also link up with the possible rumours about a redesign around the October time... Yes it would suck to wait that long, but doing this we would finally have some competition in the mobile CPU segment that is so sorely lacking. It would also mean sticking with x86 rather than some transition to an in-house SoC design based on ARM (which would be like the PPC>Intel transition all over again).

In all honesty though, I think this would be quite unlikely at least for the next release. I personally wouldn't rule it out entirely though. AMD are probably desperate for customers in the CPU segment...

So, i have been away from this thread for like 7 hours, are we done with the incessant, unnecessary crying?
Why is it that yesterday people had accepted the idea that no new MacBooks were coming, and suddenly an hour before the event the expectations for a rMBP suddenly exploded (without rumors or anything similar)?

The last product announcement....

Just gonna repost this guy....

Alright time to wait for June!

I think Apple wants all of us who are pining for our next serious computing device (i.e. a MacBook Pro) to believe this and buy the new iPad Pro. Then they can announce the new 2016 MBP so we can buy that too. There's a strategy to how they sequence their announcements. We need to be more wily than Apple to ensure we only buy what we really need (i.e. the new MacBook Pro). :)

I'm making my late-breaking call: I think there will be macs today.

I just don't think that a smaller iPad Pro, a smaller iPhone and some new watch bands is enough to make a keynote. They are all tweaks on existing products and all for niche markets. There has to be something big today.

So if not macs, then something we haven't been hearing about.
Welp, didn't exactly nail this one, did I?

Ah well, I'm one of the lucky ones with a perfectly function 2012 rMPB. So see you all again in early June, unless real rumours turn up before then...

Wait, wasn't this thread for that? :D

I think June makes sense, and it's not that far from now. But if by WWDC Apple doesn't release the new Macbooks, I'm gonna get really disappointed. Not because I need one right now, or I want one right now, but because that would mean how Apple doesn't give a **** anymore about computers, updating them only because they are "forced" to, instead of trying to make them computer/laptop flagships. Same goes with redesign: having had that much time to make a new redesign, with the Skylake + USB C/TB3 ports giving you the opportunity to do that (even a clearer one than with Ivy Bridge), if they don't come up with something new it will be disappointing. Again, not because we need a redesign (actual machines are great), but because that would show in another way how Apple is not giving a f*ck about Macs, just to focus only on toys.

Here's a few interesting articles I came across this afternoon, after the Apple announcement...

"The Joy of Ownng an Eight Year Old MBP" (For those of us hanging on to our old tech!)

"USB-C to lightning cable could suggest a new MBP feature" (For those of us scrounging for any signs of hope!)
http://thenextweb.com/apple/2016/03/22/apple-usb-c-to-lightning-cable-released/

"Why is it so tough to make people care about the new iPad Pro?" (For those of us feeling spiteful at today's sad MBP-free announcement!)

Happy reading!

I'm not completely giving up on Apple just yet. They did "invent" the new rMB last year, which is a very promising platform for future rMBPs.

However, Apple is obviously taking their time (as they've said, their focus is definitely set on the mobile world right now).

If you think about it, most of Apple's /huge/ success in the last decade came from their mobile (iPhone) platform anyway, so it makes sense for them to attempt to continue it's growth... Even if enthusiasts and professionals don't believe the iPad Pro is where personal computing should go.

Best case: June with Skylake
Worst case: Apple skips Skylake, aiming at a release in the Fall with Kaby Lake
Miracle: Apple skips Skylake, releasing AMD 15-inch MacBook Pros in the Fall (8-core Summit Ridge CPU + Polaris GPU)...
