Obviously if the Xeons present some technical problem or would force Apple to go against it's must-be-thin mantra then I could see Apple skipping Intel's new top-of-the line chips.

But if Apple can do its typical houdini magic in making it fit...I think there are lots of reasons they will offer a MBP as a Xeon option...or indeed re-configure their laptop lineup so that all MBP are Xeon.

1. Apple loves premium products and premium options. More than anyone else in the market.
2. Apple has a history with Intel Xeon (MacPro)
3. Apple doesn't want to concede the high end to competitors.
4. As I stated before, their naming conventions and product classifications with the desktop (MacPro = xeon ; iMac = i7 consumer processor) could serve as a perfect template for new laptop reclassification.

No way they would even ANNOUNCE a new MBP this year, they just refreshed it in May. Makes them look bad.

Historically speaking, they could. However I think that Skylake presents the perfect opportunity to update the Pro line as a whole because it offers so many new features. I think it will be late this year at best. Possibly early next year.

So, what seems to be the general consensus about our odds of a 13" rMBP?
According to a link a few pages back they stated that all Skylake processor would be announced Sep 1st so by then we should know if it's even possible :) IF a suitable Skylake is available by October/November I don't see why Apple wouldn't update. The argument that they updated in the spring doesn't really hold since they've done multiple updates past years.

Also, in line with the Skylake launch schedule that CPU World revealed on August 18th:

"Our industry sources have told us that we should see some Skylake U and H based notebooks in September. The sales and availability will happen in later part of September for many customers.

In other words we expect that everyone will introduce their new designs in Berlin at the IFA consumer electronics show that takes off in first days of September 2015."

Recent release intervals quickly going form the Buyers Guide:
223, 280, 251, 247 days between releases.

Might explain why they waited so long for the last refresh- they wanted the most recent 13 and 15" refreshes to be roughly mid way between their last refresh and the expected date for the upcoming Skylake refresh. Done earlier, and there would be an uneven and much longer wait for the Skylake refresh. Done even later and there wouldn't be much time between the current versions and the next update.

March 9 2015 (the last 13" MBP refresh) to today, we're already at 165 days.
9th September (estimated iPhone 6S announcement keynote) gets you to 185 days.
15th October (in line with last years October Special Event) gets you to 221 days.

Estimated launch of suitable Skylake CPU for more than one Mac line is around that time (Skylake U & Y for late September, Skylake H in late October including Xeon E3's & quad core). Not sure we've seen much about GT3/GT4 CPU yet?

Imagine a MBP Skylake release in March then we're at 373 days. So October 2015 would be the shortest release and March 2016 the longest. Hmm....

Imagine Apple brings this year the new MacBook Pro with Skylake without new design and then next year in March or so a new design with Skylake? Is this possible?
Sorry for my english guys :p:apple:

Damn I just bought my new 13' rMBP today all this talk and all these posts are making me want to wait lol. Although I really do need this computer but could possibly use my old 15' 2011 MBP for a couple months. HMMMM Decisions decisions

windows10 is out and reviews are as good as windows7 many years back. with new notebooks rolling out with skylake, buyers will want to buy for holiday season (both hardware and software gets biggest refresh in recent years). apple will shorten the refresh cycle to grab marketshare

The problem you face is that nobody knows when an update will come. October is possible but so is March or April next year. Intel's release schedule is no guarantee that Apple will release a revised product just because a new processor is available.

The current 13" rMBP is an excellent device. Unless you absolutely need USB C / Thunderbolt 3 or intend on running multiple 4K monitors attached to it then what will be the advantage in waiting? You may get a bump in processing power , you may get a bump in graphics handling but it's possible both those could be traded off against a thinner design and better battery life.

What do you mean by this? Are you saying that you think the next rMBP that they will release will have a completely new design? if thats the case then I would rather wait for that as I would gladly love thinner. I purchased the rMB before this and exchanged it because of the speed but I absolutely loved the portability and even the keyboard.

Nobody knows. It's possible that Apple will opt for a complete redesign in which case it's almost inevitable that the case will be thinner. It's also possible that Apple will simply modify the existing design to accommodate USB C but otherwise leave it alone.

Flip a coin.

It doesn't make sense. Sept will feature new iPhone 6S. Oct is featuring new iPad Pro. Do you think it would be too soon to release rMBP soon after? As much as I want them too, I doubt they would reveal all their new products this year. It is all marketing.

Also I doubt they would make the rMBP thinner. If you want that, they already have a line for that called the Macbook.

And no, Apple is not stupid enough to Rush things and put Xeons in their MBP line of laptops.

Hey, how about this?
Supposed release dates for complete notebook Skylake lineup.

Which of these will probably be in the new macbook pro 15 inch? U or H? I'm starting to thing this update will definitely happen in October/November.

I can see a refresh in October. The last releases were so ho-hum, I'm sure it was just to keep specs up with the competition. Like others have said, Apple tends to have shorter release schedules for their laptops and this all kind of just perfectly aligns with the new processors, a sizable gap to not cannibalize the new rMB.
