Ive actively started looking at alternatives to a Macbook Pro in anticipation the next update is gonna be 1 big foobar as far as the PRO name and specs should be.

Anyone else looking at alternatives and have backup suggestions?

If you value MBPs for reasons that many of us do (OS X, outstanding display [including especially great scaling performance], running cool and quiet, supporting a company that values privacy [more than the rest], etc.), it is incredibly saddening to report that there is very little else in the industry that comes close, IMHO.

Well...a Mac Pro, mac mini, imac can be considered mbp alternatives :)

All that talk about Windows Laptops and nobody mentions the Razer Blade and Blade Stealth (except like 30 pages back)?
I mean, just look at it, it's basically what everybody wants:
It looks like the current MacBook, only in black, it's the same material etc. but with upgraded internals like Skylake etc.
It has all the connectivity that's being discussed in this topic, except MacSafe ofc.
And it's already announced to feature a separate external graphics dock, just as like 25%-50% of this topic are looking forward to something like that coming to the MBP.

At least for me, it's the option to go, if apple fails to deliver, maybe even if they manage to somehow deliver.

And yes, the design is a little gamer style, but i guess you can cover the top with some kind of case, if that really is the deal breaker.

im in too deep. cant turn back. waited way too long.
Just testing you guys.

So right.

I'm totally with you, but all the reviews state that the battery life is mediocre (it's a big priority for me). I have to keep holding out.

All this talk of switching to Windows 10 sounds funny to me because I've never used an OSX computer and I'm ready to switch. I don't like the way Microsoft handles data and forces things like updates on their customers, but that's a discussion for another day.

If I were to buy a new Windows 10 laptop, I sure wouldn't do it now. Why? Because the pro Skylake chips aren't out yet. Yeah, you could get a Surface Book or XPS-15, but those machines don't have a quad-core Skylake yet. Once the MBP with Skylake comes out, there will be a slew of machines with quad-core Skylakes coming out at the same time. Right now, anything you buy will be outclassed within weeks.

So be patient either way, because anyone who compromises now MAY regret that decision in less than two months, and despite some prolific returners/resellers on this forum, it's a really bad financial decision to make hasty computer purchases then change your mind later.

LOL. I hate to tell you but quad core skylakes are in the dells and other laptops

Surface Book looks better.
Has 12 hour battery life w/ base attached.
Has touch/pen input. Hybrid use.
6 million pixels...267 ppi.

And from what ive learned using Apple products...let the hardware be made by those who make the software.

Surface Book 2 will be the "Macbook" of Window laptops.

Anyways i dont wanna think of alternatives right now. all i want is a 2016 mbp.:(

Unfortunately there isn't a single review of the actual Razer Blade that I've been able to find. It would have pulled the trigger on one if they offered options such as 32GB of RAM. A 1TB hard drive would also be nice but it's replaceable in this model. Though I may wait around for the new MBP and cry as they keep the RAM at 16GB.

Sorry but today, you cant get a mac replacement.
The mac is still the overall thinking of great engineering and designing teams.
I never used a product that has it all: premium design and materials, good battery life, good display, good laptop mechanism like perfect lid balance, good os, good thinking for the ports locations, quiet , good customer service. Now give me an example that from your point of view has all the above and i let you know about my experience with it

Ps i even tried for 8-9 minutes the hp spectre

serban --> I can tell you in my personal experience ( and I am not a small customer) regarding customer service there is no difference between Dell and Apple. I own both a late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro 15" ( 16 gb, 1TB SSd - for work) and the XPS 15 9550 (i7-6700hq, 32gb main memory, 512 gb sm951, 2tb evo sdd, 4k screen, thunderbolt 3 ) at home.
Windows 10 pro has advantages and MacOs X - vthere is no winner, but you are able to up update the xps (ssd'e m.2 and sata, memory, wifi card).
The xps's screen is much better compared to the rMBPro: sharper, larger, touch.
Office PC is much better : try to open a second Window with Onenote Mac ...
XPS is able to drive 4k 60hz hdmi 2.0 without any problem be free to try that with your mac - nada !
M.2 ssd is faster on the xps and when the sm961 is out it will be even faster. You will be able to put in a 4tb ssd - photographer will love it.
May be Windows 10 is a little bit more difficult to configure, but the XPS is 1/3 less compared to the rMBook Pro.

the XPS 15's SSD is faster than that of the 2015 15" rMBP? source?
also afaik newer rMBPs can drive a 4K@60 display, although not with the HDMI port.

you read my post here and there...at dell i never felt like an easy way to exchange my problematic ones..at apple in the first 6 months if you have a problem they exchange and the list go on.. but i talk you will never have a product that have ALL the above like a mac. and your dell is on current tech thats why you can drive 4k. wait for wwdc

ok I replaced the 32gb ssd with the Samsung SM951 512 nvm-e (had from experiments with an old MacPro ) and it is faster.
hdmi 2.0 is important if you want to connect the laptop with a modern TV ( there are only panasonic tv's equipped with displayport )

you are talking from a person who has both a mac and dell...i talk from a person who has a lot of both and others, thats my job and my pleasure to do.. monthly on my hand a lot of desktop all in one and laptops from different brands or same brand are coming

i know we all have high hopes with this redesign, and some will be let down by some decisions taken, but let us focus back to 2012 when apple released the first retina mbp. they were way beyond anything that was available back then, competition catched up only years later. by today, after 4 years they are still good laptops, but a bit underwhelming for sure.
i'm confident they'll do a great job with the new ones to come.
i don't know what future holds, i'd like to see leaps forward in overall screen quality (4k? true tone? adobeRGB?), thermal management (think of the tdp the sp4 can dissipate in such a thin chassis!), a rethought set of ports that will stay with us until 2020, new human interfaces? maybe one day we'll see touch screen on macs? or apple pencil support on the touchpad? why not touchID?

it's time to rethink the laptop and carry over some of the neat features we got used to have in mobile devices. in that regard, osx do feels like something of the past, if you compare it to how far w10 got in so few time.

(mindful sunday)

yea, I think they should bring the True Tone display feature from the iPad Pro 9.7 over to the rMBP as well as the DCI P3 colour gamut

Everything you said is why you pay a premium with Apple. Spec for spec is the MacBook worth $1,300+, no, but overpaying by a couple hundred dollars gets you peace of mind. The quality and customer support is worth the extra money. You can say the same about any Apple product, it's all a bit overpriced compared to the competition, but looking beyond specs it is totally worth it.
