Why then did they skip it both on iMac and MacBook?
I hope we will see a MBP with TB3, but I'm not so sure about it...
I dont think thunderbolt 3 was ready for sept 2015 and apple made a statement and differences the pro from consumer ultra portable macbook

i mean since the Macbook battery is charging from 1-100% in around 2 hours, i guess a 15" MBP will take longer, or they will add usb-c gen 2 for faster charging ?

I dont think apple could risk not to have any thunderbolt 3

Niether do I. In all cases above 2 of the USB-C are TB3.

At the time there just we're not very many TB3 devices, it would've been a huge issue to have TB3 ports on the iMac but not being able to use any of the existing thunderbolt kit.

But the times are achangin and we have lots of TB3 kit plus adapters for TB3->TB2 kit.

The real kicker is the Alpine ridge controller is cheaper with more functionality and 50 % lower power usage, plus the smaller usb-c. For a company that's obsessed with thinness and battery life, it would be criminal to hang on to tb2.

It should not slow down SSD. Apple is highly unlikely to do this though, this costs money and I doubt they'll see the need for 4 TB3 ports if we have 2 TB2 ports.

The thing is, I bet we'll have only 2 ports, apart from headphone jack, and maybe smart connector.
If not 2, 3 max. So theres a good chance we see all TB3 ports.

If Apple decides to never produce external displays, low chance they'll put TB3 on their devices. I dont see them producing displays anymore though....

And this, my friends, is why Apple shouldn't put only USB-C ports on the next MBP.
you hear me, Opp?

Lots of USB-C kit on the market already. People are reaping the benefits. I assume you're not a USB-C user yourself?

TB3 may be more a Kabylake thing. It all runs over the same USB-C anyway. The important thing is to cut away all the legacy crap and forge ahead. All-TB3 migration can come in the next minor iteration.

Depends. Id expect either 3x usb-c (2x of them tb3) and a hdmi (mini or normal) or just 3x usb-c with a sd slot.

I dont see both the sd and hdmi slot leaving.

That would be a regressive step.

Eh, no. That's looking backwards. MBP is a forward thinking device. Always has been. The Apple I was not designed with compatibility in mind. Nor will the next major design iteration of the MBP be.

can thunderbolt 3 charge faster than usb-c ?
No.

Macbook uses far less than maximum power allowed by the standard. I think it's because they cannot handle that much heat they had to "throttle" charging. rMBPs will be able to (13" more, 15" much more).

For reference you could use MagSafe: 45W on Air http://www.apple.com/macbook-air/specs.html, 60W on rMBP 13" and 85W on rMBP 15" http://www.apple.com/macbook-pro/specs-retina/. This is for heat reasons as well.

85W is still less than max. allowed by USB standard.

Why should someone (who isn't Oppenheim) not buy a product just because there are to many different ports?

Would you buy a laptop with FireWire and USB-Mini? Maybe? But you probably wouldn't use them and they would come with design compromises you would likely regret.

They're not going to bring back ports from the dead. I actually prefer an all USB-C laptop, but definitely will be buying the next release regardless of what it has (though may hold out if it doesn't include at least one USB-C as that's going to be the port of choice for the next few years, or at least well before I decide to upgrade from my '2016 rMBP').

I still have FireWire peripherals that I regularly make use of, so sure, assuming it had modern technology elsewhere (like a PCIe SSD, HiDPI display, etc.), I would definitely buy a laptop with FireWire. Of course, that's never ever going to happen and I am going to have to live with a dongle.

That's a bad analogy. How many new peripherals are using FW or USB mini these days? Now, how many peripherals are using USB-A (USB2/3) & HDMI. How many headphones are in the wild PLUS currently being sold that have 3.5mm jack.

Apple may (probably will) have at least 1 USB-C port, but they will also have USB3, SD and probably HDMI. At least 1 more go-around...

I understand what you're saying. However, I would say that the rMB, like the original Air was, is far more of a "forward thinking device" than the more traditional rMBP. And if the rMB has a headphone jack, and one USB C port, I'm sure we have at least that, and most likely more.

Please list USB-C devices you possess. Not people in general, you particularly.

I bought this one cuz i'm unreasonably optimistic that Apple will include TB3 (and thus, USB 3.1 Gen 2 connectivity).

Then I stuffed an 850 pro into it, unfortunately my mac is old so i'm running a trusty but crusty express card adapter that maxes at 150 MB/s :'(. When I finally connect to a proper Gen 2 interface it'll be magical.
