I remember when HP laptops had a touch-sensitive bar for volume control and everything and all the little icons lit up. I thought it was the coolest thing and I really wanted a laptop with one. But then by the time I got a new laptop, all the laptops that had them (HP, Toshiba, and even a couple Dells) dropped them. It was like a fad in 2009 that died out. Kinda surprised Apple is going that route, although clearly this one (provided it's as described, if it "is" at all) is an actual screen and is more advanced.

Metal isn't supported on 2011 Macs; it's only 2012 or higher. So, 2011 Macs and earlier use an OpenGL fallback and any performance improvements are the result of other things.

Oh, interesting — I didn't know that. The difference is staggering though, whatever else they did had a drastic effect. It used to be like a couple frames during a transition when activating MC, it's super fluid now.

I think that in most likely hood it would end up being a customisable tool bar for apps. I.e. Quick access to tools in Adobe apps etc.

We already have that, it's called a keyboard. Seriously, anyone who uses Adobe apps on a regular basis knows all the key shortcuts for tools.

I'm having a really hard time imagining the main purpose of this thing is any of the ideas being floated in this forum. Song lyrics? Dock? Notifications? Give me a break, none of those ideas are worth installing a separate touch screen. Apple has not fallen that far from the tree, despite all the whiners on here seem to think (mostly outside this thread I mean). If it's true (and The Great Gurman has apparently confirmed), there's got to be something else going on here and I look forward to seeing what it is. If it's all just an emoji picker I will admit that Apple has lost its collective mind.

OMG, is it an emoji picker?

I'm having a hard time imagining Apple releasing the MacBook Pro in the Fall. That's the iPhone's holy throne, and I can't see something distracting attention away from it. In my mind, August, September and October releases are out of the question. November might work, with Christmas shopping bolstering sales, but if I were Apple I'd be afraid manufacturing wouldn't be able to keep up demand and lose a ton of sales. Apple doesn't stockpile devices.

Lots of news regurgitators are running with the Kuo leak, but it just doesn't make sense to me.

My crazy theory: Kuo doesn't want to admit that the MBP could be manufactured and sourced outside of Asia, and as a result he heard rumors about a device and speculated that it would have to be 4Q2016 since his sources haven't seen manufacturing in Asia start yet.

Ming Chi Kuo could say that Apple has decided to go out of business next month and tons of people would believe him. He can just say whatever he wants these days.

How can you all be so dismissive of something you haven't seen? In my experience, Apple doesn't do things first, they do things right.

I doubt whatever the implementation of this OLED touch bar is, if true, will feel at all gimmicky. Also, why are so many people setting up to be disappointed? According to the rumor, the new MBP will have:
  • A thinner chassis
  • A faster processor
  • Most likely longer battery life
  • A faster GPU (integrated and discrete)
  • A new hardware feature or two
I don't know about you all, but that checks off a lot of things on the list of what I expect for a redesign (other than the confirmation of a better screen and ports). Just wait until the actual announcement and see what they have to offer. I'm sure you'll like it.

As long as Apple announces them at WWDC, I'm happy.

Your assumptions contradict physics and Moore's law (which we've already been falling short of lately).
Making it thinner + more battery + more powerful GPU is an incredibly tall order. Assuming they can make a more powerful MBP with lower TDPs, and less heat dissipation is just wishful thinking. We don't have the progress in CPU/GPU parts to achieve it. Just look at how the Macbook compares to the Macbook Air.

Uhhh... what?

The rumor says it will include:
  • Skylake (faster than Haswell or Broadwell by the way)
  • Polaris dGPU (faster than the current dGPU by the way)
My original comment has nothing to do with Moore's law in the first place. Anyways, these components are easily imaginable in a slightly thinner chassis. How does this even come remotely close to "contradicting physics"? It doesn't.

We don't have the progress in CPU/GPU parts to achieve it.

Yes we do.

Just look at how the Macbook compares to the Macbook Air.

The retina Macbook is a fanless device, the air is not. Not a good comparison.

I think this has been argued in this forum plenty of times already. If you want more information then look back on past posts or do some research on the components themselves. But this isn't some crazy idea.

Edit:
I don't even want them thinner, but I know Apple is going to do it.

Hajek's concept is extremely unattractive. Why is the keyboard pushed so far down, and why did he leave so much space between the keyboard and the hinge? It reminds me of a laptop from the early 90's before trackpads existed.

I think that space is for the top speaker bar seen on 12" rMB. Though Hajek might have gone a "tad bit" overboard with its size.

I would like to further your input and say that after much youtube watching of folks who have purchased rMB and reading various posts, I am quite impressed by what it can do. It is more capable, for most users, than what many say.

***Edit: Youtube counts as research.... right?

Your assumptions ....things were said here.... We don't have the progress in CPU/GPU parts to achieve it. Just look at how the Macbook compares to the Macbook Air.

I hastily tweaked Hajek's rendering in accordance to new rumors.

I tried but failed XD...
The power button could be a Touch ID sensor? (Capacitive or Ultra-sonic)
Two sliders-- brush size and brush opacity in Pixelmator (Borrowed iOS control centre...)
Otherwise, I seem to find the reason why Magic Keyboard has full-full-height fn keys...

Apple could release them later because they had or still have some problems with touchid?! from the mac, because Apple wanted to make them like in iOS, to be secured into the intel chips or something close. So they didnt want just you to have the fingerprint and that it.

God those small function keys make me cringe. Really hope it's not like that

Thinner - Already confirmed
More battery - At this point, it could either be the same or greater battery life
More powerful GPU - Anything > M370X - Already confirmed
"Don't have the progress in CPU parts to achieve it" - Skylake

Why would you compare the MacBook to the MacBook Air, then bring that conversation to these new MacBook Pro's? Makes no sense. Nice to know you know what physics and Moore's law are, though.

Good try, but if they make esc a part of the OLED display I am gonna be mad...
I will still buy it, but I'm gonna be mad doing so:mad:

We have our first benchmarks on NotebookCheck for the Intel Iris Pro 580! Not much to go on yet, and somewhat disappointing (only 30% faster than the Intel Iris 550), but here they are:

I think the most useful function of the touch bar would be programmable keys for each application. Write a document in pages and you'll have font settings, cut, copy, paste, word prediction and undo/redo. Switch to Safari and you have back, forward, refresh and the favorites bar. Switch to Photoshop and you'll have the whole instrument panel. Audio playing in the background will show volume slider and playback buttons, and so on.

We still don't know many details about this touch bar. How large will it be? Is it going to have full color or just white OLED light? Is the light going to shine through the aluminum body and be able to completely disappear when it is not needed?

It should be possible to turn of the touch bar in case that the light from the display is distracting in a dark environment. I'm also concerned about the display being an OLED. This means that it can't show static elements for a long time or the display will have ghosting and maybe even burn-in.
