Is there any possiblity the Skylake 15" rMBP will be available in January? I'm in the same boat. My current Samsung QX411 is slowing down and I'm ready to make the jump to a Mac, but I'd really prefer to buy at the top of the line, since I'm hoping for this to last me anywhere between 6 and 10 years. January is when my next semester starts and I'd prefer to buy at the beginning, so how luck do you all think I have with this?

Not impossible but Feb or March more likely.

If there is nothing physically wrong with the Samsung then I would be tempted to do a complete rebuild and restore it back to factory fresh. That should breathe a bit more life into it. Then you should be able to live with it for another 6 months if needed.

Agree with N7G per above. If Intel produces appropriate Skylake HQ chips in sufficient quantity in January, I wouldn't expect Apple to release a Skylake 15" MBP until a couple weeks after lunar new year (February 8, 2016). Lunar new year is a huge deal in China, and it tends to shut factories down for a bit. As an example, when Apple released MBPs in the 1st quarter of past years, it released on 2/26/08 and 2/24/11.

Alright, thank you both for the info. February is doable, though not ideal. Let's hope for all our sakes it ends up being earlier.

For what it's worth, in the very least I'd put the deadline at probably in mid November for a 2015 release as I'm sure that Apple will want to capitalize on holiday sales. Without that, there is less incentive of a 2015 release.

What are the chances Nvidia GTX 980 (announced today) makes it into next rMBP?

As much as an alien spacecraft landing on my terrace. The current dGPU has a TDP of 45-50W while that thing you are mentioning exceeds 125W and can reach 150W under load. Add to that the fact that next gen MacBooks are going to get slimmer. Current dGPU 15" rMBP with 45W TDP have throttling issues, now imagine the same on a slimmer chassis. ;) Also according to nvidia this GPU is for 17+ inch notebooks with an appropriate cooling system. The notebooks (they can be hardly called portable) shown using it are extremely thick and there's even one with a gigantic water cooler on the back. o_O

Insights like these are rare here. I think we often tend to think that Apple, except for Intel's release schedules, are immune to external circumstances. You make a very good case.

hi there i need your help - is there any likelihood of a new MBP in the next 2 months as im in the process of buying my first ???

I'm almost certain there won't be any Apple events this year until Q1 2016 the very earliest so imo, no.

I'm almost certain they wouldn't need an event to update the MBP.

Virtually impossible if its a redesign or major update. They always showcase their magnificent incredible powerful machine when something like that happens. There's no point when it's something minor like their latest models cos there's nothing to bang on about that's new.

Ever since Job left us Apple's been playing catch up- spec wise.

I'm almost certain they wouldn't need an event to update the MBP.

That completely depends on whether they just decide to put a Skylake processor in the existing design.

However, with a redesign looking likely (after the Macbook getting similar treatment), I very much doubt they'll do a silent launch.

Something new about rMBP 15"?
*the source* has a 15" skylake mbp with a yet to be released i7 with iris pro graphics in a current-generation shell. the cpu is suspected to be released in nov/dec.

three other source's colleagues are sort of confirming an oct event. plus it is marked in some sort of internal schedule to be happenig.

what i make of this: no majorly redesigned mbp, just skylake upgrade announced at an oct event. sales will start dec.

Could see it now:
MacBook Pro: The only thing that’s changed is a few things, nothing major

This prediction makes absolutely zero sense.

1. Apple does not give significant advance notice for minor updates to products it already sells (unless the current product were to be continued alongside the newer one, which would not be the case here). If in October Apple announced an upcoming Skylake 15" MBP in December, this would kill sales of the current 15" MBP for over a month. It's a different case when it's announcing a product in a new category, such as the Apple Watch or rMB. See the Osborne effect for details: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osborne_effect

2. Even worse for Apple, an October announcement for an MBP launching in December would mean the company would destroy 15" MBP sales on Black Friday, the most important sales weekend of the year. And even if Apple was somehow able to magically maintain sales of its current MBP over Black Friday weekend, a December release would effectively mean its shiny new product would have missed its most important sales window.
