Apple won’t have a new external display to show off at its WWDC 2016 event later this monthdespite limited inventory as the company plans an event that will mostly focus on new software, according to sources. @9to5mac

Hopefully new Watch Bands.

"Focus on software" does equal "no hardware." Timmy can spend 90 minutes talking about software and the remaining talking about the snappy new MPB that you can use to operate (and develop) that software.

What will it be? If there is no new mbp, at what event they will unveil it? WWDC is for software, september is for iPhone. I don't get it anymore. Maybe 2017?
Whenever Apple wants. There's nothing stopping Apple from having an event in July or August but themselves. If it releases in September, then they'll announce it with the iPhone and whatever else comes out. If it comes out in October, they'll have an event in October for it.

How would they support that oled bar without a new MacOS? I don't think its happening at WWDC.
With a version of El Capitan that supports it.

Everyone should prepare for no announcement. It would be great if Apple surprised us, but the general media consensus is that they won't. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

My guess would b October or November, it's not like they have a pattern to follow with their laptop releases...

No new laptop for me then fine, I'll set my current model up as a desktop setup and grab me an iPad Pro 9.7" :D

all I can say is that Apple really managed to screw up this MBP update process. I don't believe it when some people say that the general buyer is not interested in specs - if you buy a machine that is this expensive you at least check what's in it... Imagine the revenue they lost, because of people switching and buying other brands that actually offer up to date hardware (thinking about the 15 inch). If there is no June announcement I will seriously reconsider waiting or buying something else instead... -.- :/

Actually Intel screwed it all up to begin with. They messed up broadwell release so badly, they have now ditched their Tick Tock cycle!

I thought this day couldn't get much worse, but November is hauntingly far away... I've convinced a friend to cope without a computer at uni until it's announced, but coping for three full months would be awful. Please not November, Apple...

All WWDCs are "software focused." That's not news.

True, but the note that it'll be "light on new hardware announcements in general" suggests that they won't even update the minor stuff, never mind dedicate 20 minutes to a MBP announcement.

To put a positive spin on things, WWDC is going to big on Siri...Siri is coming to Mac OS...as demonstrated by pressing the new Oled bar on the new rMBP's...bam!

Simples.

In 2012 Lion also wasn't updated for the retina display before launch so maybe the same is happening for the OLED strip?

Absolutely insane that we're nearly confirmed for no hardware at WWDC. Rene Ritchie is saying the same thing "for WWDC, think software".

Three year old Mac Pro. 5 year old TB Display. Woefully outdated and behind the curve MBP line. Who matters? Not the pros, ever.

Yeah as I said they don't have any real pattern to follow anymore, Apple can literally launch new laptops when they feel like it as it's been so long now since the last update. The main thing throwing a spanner in the works is no mention from AMD about the new Polaris 11 mobile GPU's, and I don't Nvidia have announced any new laptop GPU's based on their new technology either.
But then again they may ditch the dGPU all together.

If the new rMBP charges via USB-C, would you be able to use an external battery pack similar to the ones you charge iPhones with? Or is there a limitation to the power USB-C can output?

There is a power limit for USB-C. As far as I can remember they have an upper threshold of 100W, which means that USB-C could power even the most power hunger of MacBook Pro's. The 15" has an 85W MagSafe charger, which is comfortably under that limit.

All rMBPs just received a $100 price cut (higher end 15", a $200 price cut) via the back to school promotion, no educational credentials required. Just click the BTS link on the Apple front page and then click on the MacBook Pro picture.

Edit: Looks like all of the educational pricing is available to everyone...? Just went to purchase an iPad Pro, and it never asked me for any special credentials. I didn't actually purchase, but got to the payment page and it's still the educational pricing with the free earphones.

They use the honor system. Anyone can go online and order from the educational store even if they aren't a student. Sure, that may be wrong ethically speaking, and I am sure it's abused a lot, but they have always been pretty open with it regardless.

My worst case scenario is 13" released in June (or July) and 15" in the fall. I must have the 15" (gonna be using my iPad for note-taking in class and the 15" as my "desktop" in the dorm), so will suck to have to get it after college starts, but it's better than nothing.

The real thing that will suck is having to live in a dorm. Yuck.

They are far more likely to just reduce the overall size of the machine.

After looking at the leaked top case, it seems as if the smaller model has the same dimensions (sans thickness). This means that in order to reduce the bezels they will have to bump up the screen size to a 14".

After getting my hopes up in March for nothing, and same for WWDC, it feels like we'll get to September and then the headlines will be "Skylake MacBook Pros launching Q3 2017"... the Skylake MacBook Pro has become almost mythical at this point, with so many rumours yet no actual product.

Hope this happens again

Phil Schiller @ 23:16, referring to Mac updates: "Nobody turns over their entire line as quickly and completely as we do at Apple. We're really proud of the engineering team and the work they do, to do this quick [sic], so you can get the exact product you need."

It's nice that they felt that way in 2012, but my how times have changed in four years. Thankfully this video provides some hope that there will be a hardware refresh at this year's WWDC; it's high time.

This waiting-period-feelings really move as waves. There are 10 pages of people getting real excited, then 10 pages of "i dont't know.. i-m worried it will not come at wwdc" and then few pages of literal anger at Apple. And then some rumor comes and everybodies happy again.
Okay... let me express my anger also - Goddamnet Tim, where the hell is my MBP. I bet i can plan, try and have a real baby faster then you can a give us a little piece of new hardware.. goddamnet.
Silverlining - if there will be no MBP at wwdc.. at least my baby will have some nice watchbands to play with.
