The leaked 13-inch case is most likely legitimate. MagSafe is history. There will only be 4 ports on the computer — all Thunderbolt 3/USB Type C. This would be very future proof. The only thing not future proof is the headphone jack which may vanish in future iterations of the product lines.

Most people aren't heavily into technology as we are here. The reason Thunderbolt 3/USB C as the only connector will be great is its simplicity. The variety of ports and connectors on a computer on the market today makes technology challenging for those people who aren't that into it. I work in a place where users don't understand the difference between mini Displayport, VGA, USB, and HDMI when trying to connect their computer to a projector. And they just don't care!

I relish a world where we don't have to get bogged down on connectors and ports. I hope HDMI goes away and is replaced on projectors and TVs with USB-C ports. I hope everything will consolidate around this one Thunderbolt 3/USB Type C connector — including the iPhone and iPad. Enough with this stupid array of connectors.

Actually, on the 15" the mics are hidden behind the speaker grill. The 13" chasis has for the first time a speaker grill, this could indicate that they are adopting the same design as in the 15", hiding them behind the grill. This eliminates the need of drilling holes around the chasis, since the holes are already there. In my opinion that way is more aesthetically pleasing.

Btw, I know we are all going to miss magsafe. I regard it as one of Apple's greatest addition to their notebook lineup, it is useful, simple and most of all elegant. But try looking at it this way. You won't need to ask your friend or buy (specifically) a "Mac charger". USB-C is going to be universal, the amount of places that you will be able to plug in your Mac will increase exponentially. This is the aspect that is not being examined. You will be able to plug your mac even to a portable battery pack. I will miss magsafe, but certainly welcome the big advantage of being able to plug in my laptop anywhere. I won't have to rely on apple to build my charger, we will have options now. Imagine a charger with USB ports, something apple would not do, but a third party will. The possibilities will be endless.

You're right...and I thought that too. Until I looked at the 12" rMacBook and saw that it too had dual microphones, despite having a speaker grill. So I still think its safe to assume that the chassis we've all seen is incomplete, in terms of ports.

The thing about MagSafe is that it offers protection. (I have the rMBP, and on numerous occassions I've been saved by MagSafe, your experience might differ.) Here's the thing, if my Mac Charger ever, lets say, fails or breaks or explodes, I can then switch over to the USB C ports for my charging purposes. MagSafe just offers additional protection. Also Apple just introduced a Smart Connector, and it can charge too, so I actually think MagSafe will be replaced by an improved Smart Connector mechanism.

I can't see a reason to nix MagSafe. Charging via USB-C kinda feels cheap.

Remember... the MacBook is closer to an iPad Pro than a MBP. It doesn't need MagSafe; it's a lightweight and simple device.

Exactly! Having something magnetically connect to the chassis, rather than plugging it in to the port, feels far more luxurious, and more importantly efficient. A USB port should never be used for charging unless theres no other option. You constantly plug in the charging cable, and that kind of use is not intended for USBs - frequent use damages USB.

I understand that the rMB is light, and the magnetic attraction would be too overbearing for the weight of the device, which would compeltely go against the purpose of MagSafe in the first place. But I can bet the 13/14" rMBP will be heavier.

Deja vu. This sort of posts started the "rMBP being released at the march event" craze. I was quick to show everyone that those shipping dates fluctuate A LOT during the year, most didn't listen as it's typical. If you look 300+ pages back, one can see the same thing happened. Custom builds of MacBooks doesn't mean absolutely anything, what DOES indicate imminent release is when stock (non-BTO, un-configured models) start being delayed considerably. But I'm sure (even after this), posts will follow claiming that shipping dates for custom rMBPs in X country are slipping, and so begins Phase 1 of the "Waiting for Skylake MBP thread" seasonal nuclear meltdown (just like in march).
Phase I: start making up reasons why X product has to be released. Any little thing even if unrelated counts.
Phase II: people get on the hype train, mass delusion follows.
May I go on? ;D

Interesting that the rMBP, MBA, and Mac Mini all have extended delivery dates for BTO configs, but MB, iMac, and MPro don't have extended delivery dates for BTO configs. Probably something simple they ran out of and can't get them locally at RadioShack any more, like 10K 10Ohm resistors

wait, BTO???

I remember when I got a Windows laptop around middle school, I thought it was really cool that it had so many different types of ports: headphone, USB-A, e-SATA, firewire, TV tuner, Ethernet, SD card, HDMI, VGA...now that all seems lame to me.

That said, it isn't really going to be "simplicity" until everything else switches to USB-C. Because replacing more ports with dongles and adapters is just trading one complexity for another. Eventually everything will catch up, though, I hope.

yep the mbps btos are june 15. does that mean we are getting a refresh?

I like the MagSafe connector, but the actual cords (from adapter to laptop) sucked. I had to replace my MBP's power cord three times in the three years I had it. My old Dell's power cord still works to this day and it's almost 10 years old!

If replacing MagSafe means they'll finally create a more robust cord that isn't so prone to failure (as well as discoloration), then maybe I'll welcome this. But in all probability we'll just get the same crappy cords...

There's been some good discussion about various ways Apple may choose to use an OLED touch panel above the keyboard. It seems pretty obvious different functions could be triggered depending on the program that is being used but one of the ideas I heard someone mention that stuck with me was that the panel could be a great way to visually que up Siri being triggered so real estate on the screen isnt taken up.

I did a quick mockup of what this interaction could possibly look like with Siri being activated on the touch panel.

For people asking why I'm waiting for the new mbp when i have the latest version.
I'm trying to sell my gaming desktop computer and use the upcoming mbp as my gaming machine. So i won't have to carry around my 30lbs+ computer + monitor every three months when I need to move out of my dorm. eGPU setup with GTX 1080 connected to the new mbp will run most games with no problem. Fair enough?

some people call them bto, others call them cto, how about nsc for non stocked configurations

macrumors headlines use bto
Apple Expands Build-to-Order Configuration Options on Retina MacBook Pro [Updated]

I thought CTO meant customized models and BTO were just base models like the $1999 and $2499 15inch mbps?

When it comes to ports, I'll always remember the very first laptop I ever got. I was probably 11 or 12 and it was a mid-range PC laptop made by Gateway. It had tons of old school ports that I don't even remember the names of anymore and I always lamented the fact that it had them because I felt it completely ruined the design, and I couldn't figure out who used such things. No matter what happens with the new MBP, I'll always be grateful that they don't look like this anymore:

As for MagSafe, I've always thought it was cool, but that Apple's implementation of it was super poor. With all of the MacBook's I've ever used, MagSafe doesn't usually function properly. You'll connect the charger to the computer, and nothing will happen. No LED indicator will light up and it'll say "Not Charging" in the menu bar. The only way to get it to work will be to either disconnect it and reconnect it (usually a bunch of times) or sit there endlessly jiggling the connector while it's in the MacBook, hoping beyond hope that it isn't broken and that the machine will eventually realize that the charger is in fact connected. This always does the trick, but it's annoying and nothing will fix it (believe me, I've tried everything).

USB-C has some definite drawbacks, but it sounds like it will be more robust and give me less headaches.

True. Before Apple's "retina" display, most PC laptops had crappy TN 768p displays. Not long after, most of them switched to IPS, and now many have QHD resolutions and above. Apple really did set the trend in that case.

And after Apple's retina display, Apple is still using the crappy TN panels themselves! They should have really followed that trend they set a little better. The MBA display is horrid.
