My Surface Book with Skylake and Discreet Graphics and Skylake should ship tomorrow or Thursday. Been getting used to Windows 10 (Parallels) on my maxed out early 2015 rMBP. If all goes as planned MB will be on Ebay after I take it in for new screen / Lid under warranty replacement (it has the same spotting my 2013 had) That will sadly end that chapter in my life...
Cool?

Wait a minute, they're shipping Surface Books this week? Have they even confirmed the GPU?

Sucks to hear that. Put up a review of the Surface Book after you've had a good chance to use it. I'm curious to see how people that used Macs find it.

Hey friends,

just a quick question: As Skylake does not come with DisplayPort 1.3 - how do you see the chances of an updated cinema display with an integrated gpu along the next mbp line up?

Thanks for your input - looking forward to it :)

-10%. That is not going to happen.

By the way... does anyone have any recent updates on a Skylake release? I have my Surface Pro 4 coming on Monday and i'm going to give it a shot for the 30-day return period. I'm coming from a Surface Pro 3 that I sold but i'm really eager to use iMessage and take phone calls from a MBP that'll pair with my 6 Plus.

I've got a Surface 3 myself, and the integration with my iPhone/iCloud is the only reason I won't go to the Surface full time. As for Skylake, I wouldn't hold my breath for anything this year.

Decided to buy the 2015 rMBP too. The prices in Australia were shooting up so I had the chance to buy one at the old price plus another 10% discount. Overall, I saved around ~$600. I really wanted the Surface Book but I couldn't justify the $900 more for roughly the same specs and a touchscreen/tablet.

Even if the Skylake Macs are much better, I'll be able to sell this one for decent price and maybe even make a small profit!

Did you happen to look at buying outside the country? I think Singapore didn't have such a huge price hike and their dollar is at parity. Maybe you'll get an import tax but the current price in Australia is $300 more than the equivalent USD->AUD. Absolute joke. I got my 2010 MBP for $2400 down from $3000 when AUD was almost parity with USD. Good times!

I'm 90% certain that's it's March 2016 onwards. Marks 1 year since Retina Macbook and 4 years since rMBP.

"Thunderbolt 3 is capable of driving up to two 4K external displays at 60Hz or a single 5K display at 60Hz running off a single cable." (source: https://www.macrumors.com/2015/06/02/intel-thunderbolt-3-usb-c-displayport-1-2/ )

So I would guess it's possible, but I don't think Apple will still do it. More likely you will have to run a separate external GPU through Thunderbolt 3 and connect that to the probably-coming-at-somepoint Apple 5K Monitor.

Having the capability to do it, but Apple not doing it is a decent position - any purchase of a 5K ACD aren't encumbered with Apple's choice of GPU, and with a chassis you'd be free to upgrade it easily. With a non-passive optical cable, you could easily have a chassis tucked out of the way from where you work

MS usually gets thing "right" around the 3rd or 4th round. The surface book is a beast.. With ports. Windows 10 is a very usable OS, have had zero stability issues with 8.1.. Presume 10 will be just as stable.

MS Office for Windows is still superior to the Mac version.

Very concerned about Apple's ability to put our new products, even if it's Intel's fault.. Apple is pinned to this cycle. If you guys remember.. Apple dumped IBM because they could not spin out processors fast enough and Intel was spanking them... Look at the Ax chips development and how Apple is closely involved in it.. Maybe? Ax based macs in the near future?

At the same time, the current rMBP is from 2013 and I'm not buying..

Look at MS, shipping bad ass notebooks with Skylake and Apple is ... Doing ... Ummm... Jan or Feb?? Probably remove all the ports. Will they grace us with a 17 inch rMBP?

OS X is not even touch optimized, so touch screen is worthless for the Mac.

Go MS go...I love a race ;)

Here's how I see it:

2008 - first unibody design.
2012 - thinner unibody design + retina.
2016 - thinner again + shrunk bezel + USB-C

WWDC 2016 (June?) seems the perfect time to launch it.

The wait is killing me :S

I'm in need of a new laptop (my 15'' MPB mid 2010 it's dead), and i was going to spend a lot of money on the new rMBP 15 until i saw this thread...

What can we expect for the entry level 15'' Skylake MBP? That would be the one i want.

My guess right now:

Slimmer, lighter and with less unused space around the display. (Maybe 16" in the same size as the old 15")
Quad-core Skylake processor with eight threads.
Skylake Iris Pro graphics
16GB RAM
256GB PCI-E NVMe
Probably only Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.1 Type-C ports of an unknown number and a headphone jack.
Not cheap.

this is the answer that made me return the rMBP 2015 M370X. The integrated graphics have more GFLOPS than the dedicated gpu in the current lineup and can also support up to three 4k displays. I hope it will come with a 4k display along with the possibility to connect two additional 4k screens to it. 5K in a single cable is also great.

4K is the future, and flatscreens are dropping prices like mad this autumn. Dell has already done it, and so must Apple. The 4K footage from the iPhone needs to be displayed at full potential on the top tier offering from the Macbook Pro line.

The current lineup is too bulky. Looks antique. Reduce and enhance please...

With the thinner bezel in the new Macbook, I would think any new MBP 13 or 15 will have a similar ratio bezel, no?
Surely Jonny Ive wouldn't allow that visual inconsistency across his product lines...could he? :)
That would mean 14" and 16" MBP's here we come!

The bezel on the MacBook doesn't look all that different then my 2012 rMBP. I'm hoping for essentially the same body (maybe thinner), all TB3/USBC ports (a minimum of 2 on each side, ideally 3), and going to 4k on the resolution. I would drop over $3k on the top end for that guy today!

I expect (or at least hope) that Apple will incorporate Sharp's "infinity" IGZO displays into any MBP redesign. Dell had an exclusivity contract on those near-borderless displays through the end of 2015, which is why Dell's XPS lineup has them while no other company does. This also precluded their use in the rMB. However, there's no obvious reason why Apple can't or wouldn't use them in 2016.
