The wait is killing me :S

I'm in need of a new laptop (my 15'' MPB mid 2010 it's dead), and i was going to spend a lot of money on the new rMBP 15 until i saw this thread...

What can we expect for the entry level 15'' Skylake MBP? That would be the one i want.

What killed your 2010 MBP? Mine is still good to use for another few years I hope. I had to replace the HDD with SSD. Upgraded to 8GB RAM but one of the slots died. Replaced the keyboard myself and it's still great. Solid laptop.

My guess right now:

Slimmer, lighter and with less unused space around the display. (Maybe 16" in the same size as the old 15")
Quad-core Skylake processor with eight threads.
Skylake Iris Pro graphics
16GB RAM
256GB PCI-E NVMe
Probably only Thunderbolt 3 / USB 3.1 Type-C ports of an unknown number and a headphone jack.
Not cheap.

Any chance we'll see 32GB RAM some time soon? Probably not worth the upgrade price but who knows. I guess it's hit a point where an extra 16GB of RAM is unlikely to be utilised.

Multiple kernel panics.

It's a known issue: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT203554

But i didn't know there was a replacement program, so now i'm waiting to buy the new model, since i don't want to deal with the cost of the new logic board.

Quite possible that with Skylake 32GB will be available with an extra cost. I really hope it will be.

Lenovo even has a Skylake Laptop announced that will have up to 64GB RAM, but they're using four 16GB RAM packages and Apple will probably only want to use two.

32 GB probably by Asus, Alienware, Lenovo, and maybeeeee..... up to 24 GB in a top notch BTO rMBP for crazy price..#greed

--> doitdada : you are wrong
the xps 15 9550 series is an open system --> you are able to exchange the 16gb built in MEMORY with 32 gb (2x16gb modules)
it is even possible to put in a different ssd and in some systems an m.2 ssd combined with a large sata iii ssd

this system is great and in most aspects better than the current 15" Retina Macbook Pro

It's not like the industry is throwing 16GB sticks at you. Nobody is feeding the 32GB RAM laptop users, because it is such a small market. The 4K IGZO display is too saturated for serious work with Adobe and Final Cut. Nobody offers 4K IPS displays at 60hz in laptops yet.

Dude.... If you haven't upgraded in any of the last couple of MBP updates, I don't think Skylake is going to be the unicorn you are looking for.

But props to you for keeping that machine going for as long as you have.

I don't want to seem rude, but probably with the money you spent on reparations you could have buy two or three new Mac.
:D

why is skylake taking forever? it's already shipping on surface books. maybe because Intel and Microsoft have a longer history than Apple in terms of partnership. Maybe MS paid a lot to get first dibs on them?

Regardless I'm looking foward to seeing skylake on the MBP.

My gf is in dire need of one. She's coming from a mid 2010 MBP and the poor resolution and outdated form factor is having me wait in anticipation. Will be getting the MBP instead of the regular Macbook so it can last her 4+ years.

I've got a Macbook aluminum late 2008 that I'm currently sporting and considering buying a new MBP but the wait might get to me. I might just buy a new one and sell it if the upgraded skylake MBPs offer out of this world performance.

How's that exactly?

My point was there is always something new on the next horizon, and whatever the latest update Apple makes to the MBP's won't be completely perfect. Maybe they will update to Skylake, but dump all the ports except USB C or something. It's always a trade off.

He has been limping along on a broken machine from 2009, so a current MBP would probably be a great upgrade for him now, and last years MBP also would have been a good upgrade as well. Why keep waiting and waiting through several updates without upgrading?

Hi everyone,
please don't judge me, I'm coming from the dark side that is Microsoft. My Samsung laptop has died after 7 up and down years (I'm quite happy about it actually as I just couldn't take it anymore)
So, obviously I'm in the run for a new laptop.
I finally want to switch over to a MacBook Pro.
Now, I do not mind the specs on the current MBP 15", BUT I read on several sites online that it's probably best to wait til 2016.
At the moment, I don't really need a laptop and I can just get by with my iPhone. But I do wonder, what are the chances that the new MBP arrives in store in the first quarter of 2016?
Sorry, if this has already been answered somewhere in this thread, I'm a mum and don't get much time nowadays to spend time on things I'm interested in.

The chances are very high that a update will happen during the spring next year (2016). It will probably be about half a year before the model becomes widely available, maybe more. In Norway it us almost an additional 6 months for the new rMBP 2015 to reach the stores after the launch/announcement. So think roughly 6-9 months before an update will come. If you consider that a comfortable amount of time to wait, you may as well wait. Using your iPhone as your only device may work if you have the plus model.

The ball is entirely in Intel's court. There hasn't been a word on the appropriate processors even being announced for the 15" MBP.

On the other hand, the 13" final processor has been announced but not launched, but evidently, it seems fairly likely that it will be ready before January which would mean the 13" will get an annual upgrade at the end of Q1/early Q2.

Unfortunate, tbh.

Lots of Skylake laptop variations out now in the world of windows. Hopefully Apple will get a move on. Even if they are not rmbp level chips they could at least get something out for the Airs and also the minis. Hp has an ultralight model which seems to be very inspired by the Air and realistically probably is a competitor also for the 12"mb.

Am I misremembering or did Apple just bump MBP specs - ram on the entry models and processor speeds?

:D

All of that upgrade/repair was probably less than $500 total, and that's including the two SSDs that account for most of the cost. So by skipping a full new machine upgrade in the middle (2012, eg), I've certainly saved over $1000. Not that any of that matters -- I probably should have done it anyway, as my self-deprecating post implied.

I guess I've just been hoping for new form factor, particularly given all the innovation that's been happening on the Windows side over the last couple years. Spending another $2000 for a laptop that's 40% faster and 20% lighter but is otherwise pretty similar seems like a disappointment after getting addicted to revolutionary upgrades for all my previous new purchases over the last 20 years. My hopes are less with Skylake than that Apple will take this opportunity to do something new with their laptops. Those new windows laptops are looking awfully nice; I'm unlikely to switch after all these decades, but it does take some of the fun out of buying new MacBooks when they change so little now. I guess I should just accept it's become a tool and no more, and move on.

Any word on whether they'll release a 5K version? I was in the store today and compared the resolution of the 5K iMac with the 4K rMBP and they were considerably different. Both super high quality though obviously

The iMac 27 5k has 217.57 PPI and the rMBP 15 is 220.53 PPI. The rMBP already has a higher pixel density... maybe the diference you notice is something about the glass coating / layers, or the panel quality / configuration, but not the resolution.

My opinion is that batteries and iGPUs needs to get much better before a 5k inch laptop is released...
