This is the only stuff i care to see in this thread at this point. Skip over all the complainers/switching to windows computers posts

From March to June (those months where people expected twice the release of new MBPs) everything could be said, even supposed leakes from insider workers (chasis). This thread is called "Waiting for Skylake MBP" tho, so don't expect people talking only about leaks, but about everything related MBPs, and that includes the ones skipping them to jump off the boat.

Obviously. I've been waiting since last January for an "big" update. Jumping ship is all good and fine but why justify it by complaining on here. We are all upset about it but can't do anything about it.

I defiantly want a 2016 MacBook Pro 15-inch, nothing will stop that purchase. My problem is that I also need to make another purchase now as I have zero computers. It's a bigger problem than waiting in your old machine with sadness. I think my choice for this month is down to a 2015 MacBook Pro 13-inch ($1800), a 2015 MacBook Pro 15-inch ($2500), a 2016 MacBook 512GB ($1600), or a Surface Pro 4 plus Type Cover ($2380). They all appeal to me for various reasons.

I think I'll just use this iPad Pro for the first few weeks and snatch up the MBP the day it comes out. I'll be close to campus actually, so that'll be helpful (I'll be attending UCSC)

As a comp sci major, I hope we won't have any assignments that require a terminal for the first few weeks!!

Don't they have computer labs anymore? I'm an old geezer, managed my comp sci degree without having access to a personal computer. Use the lab until Apple release something worth buying!

Now that we're all waiting...why not have an introspective chat? I'd like to know why others are so loyal to OS X or the hardware? What makes you, and us wait so painfully for these new Skylake rMBP. What would make you jump ship to let's say Windows, Linux, Chrome OS. For example I think it's time I switch over to Android, however their hardware options are limiting, as I only prefer stock Android; so I still carry on with iOS for that reason. What makes all of you attached or bound to OS X, and MBP?

I'm never going to "jump ship" unless macOS and/or MacBook Pro is dropped entirely. I own a Windows desktop, and I do use Windows for gaming, but that's about it. Here are some reasons why I personally prefer OS X/macOS to Windows:

-OS X is more aesthetically pleasing to me. Graphics are better, text looks amazing, it's "prettier" for lack of a better term
-OS X scales much better than Windows, and in 2016, I don't want to use 1080p or lower anymore.
-OS X has much better native apps. iTunes, Photos, Notes, Mail, I use them all. Windows native apps suck (for me)
-OS X crashes less, doesn't have as many errors (in my experience)
-Much easier to input foreign characters on OS X (that's important to me, as someone who loves languages!)
-OS X works seamlessly with my iPhone and iPad. As long as I have those two, I can't see myself using Windows. OS X is meant to work with the mobile devices. I like them all "connected" and working in harmony.

For these reasons, I must use OS X. And for that reason, I must use Apple hardware. And I do think they have excellent laptops, with the best trackpads out there (most PC laptops' touchpads are terrible) and excellent displays (though some PC ones I've seen do come close). My only complaint about the hardware is the bad cooling, but most of the time that's not an issue.

I've tried Android as well, and it just feels sluggish and "messy" and I want iOS to go with OS X, so that's not really an option for me.

I can't stand iOS, it just isn't geeky enough and too limiting in terms of customizing screen space. OS X isn't just an automatic choice anymore as Windows 10 is pretty decent and mac OS has not had a meaningful update or design overhaul in a while, so I am excited about what Apple brings to the table, although the latest OS X reveal didn't offer much at all, bunch of gimmicks and Siri....

I also find that Apple fans tend to be more defensive about all things Apple, I guess they are more passionate, most windows users are indifferent.

Well I don't want to make enemies with my first 5 post but I'm not fixated on any OS. My mobile system of choice is Android simply because I love the customization, removable battery and SD card slot and of course the App drawer.

Mac OS itself is too gesture driven for me something I don't want and don't like. But MS and their complete lack of respect for privacy, Windows 10 malware tactics, Wintelalliance of forced updates starting in 2 years and mobile first, cloud first are pushing me away. My desktop OS of choice is Windows 7 it does exactly what I want and it simply works for me, in terms of speed and customizations I love Linux mint.

So why am I waiting for a MBP? Because the only real competitor doesn't have the customer service I expect from a premium product and I don't! what a touch screen but still have a higher than 1080p (4k would be perfect) resolution...try finding that in a Windows Laptop. Also I think the aluminum frame looks gorgeous and I'm hoping for a removable battery, RAM and upgradable SSD in the new models. A near borderless frame could allow Apple to increase the screen size on both models while also keeping the form factor the same.

For those who want a dedicated GPU there is the Razer Encore it's an external chassis built to hold a GPU only downside is it's 500 bucks without a card.

I stick to OS X (macOS now lol) because of UNIX, it's design, it's ease of use, it's built in utilities, hardware of Apple, lack of ********, cutting edge tech (what we're all waiting for), lots of other stuff.

I've considered windows laptops but I know that a XPS will simply not last as long and be built as well as something like a MBP. Also, Windows is spaghetti and although they are getting a bash shell Windows is still a mess.

OS X/macOS is great, girls love 15" MBP, and I need thunderbolt 3 for 40 Gbps adventures. Apple never did me wrong, all the way back to the Power Macintosh 6200 days (1996, folks) so i'll let this sh*t slide for another couple of months. Eventually i'll have to collect my chips and dip if Apple never shows up but, until then cash in hand ready to buy.

In the extreme case, I could run 10.11 for another couple of years (my contingency plan). I run 10.6 daily on older hardware. The apps are tying me down, but I suspect most Mac centric app devs would reconvene on Windows if Apple decides to get out of Desktop scene, or atleast have an iPad variant. If the iPad pro is my only choice, i guess i'll have to live with it. Again, thinking of the extremes here.

macOS
* Plays well with Linux (my work servers), while also being a great personal computing OS
* Stable OS (less crap buildup over time), relatively secure
* Eye candy
* The only OS where trackpad has been perfected
* I'm locked to my iTunes library and iTunes is a **** to use in Windows

rMBP
* I'm in love with the current rMBP design. It is perfect. Disappointed personally to see the OLED touch bar coming in to adulterate the minimalist design.
* Build quality

So yeah, for me personally, Windows machine is never going to be an option, at least in the near future. But it's kind of getting frustrating recently seeing some of design choices Apple is making on Macs lately :(

I'm currently on Windows, it works fine but I want to try macOS, especially now that Siri comes with it. The MBP looks stunning too, which is a good reason to buy it for me.
I don't like iOS though, especially not the new 10 update. I'd say I want the best of both worlds, macOS and Android :)

I think in recent years, it has been mostly iStuff hardware in September event and all the financially less important hardware (macs) are left to the part II that has been held in October. Even the October invitations have been like "now the spotlight turns to macs", "we got more to show you" and so on. Considering how unusually old the whole mac lineup is, I think it will be refreshed almost entirely in that event. And that warrants almost an event by itself.

So the changes for mbp refresh in september events are very slim. And changes for earlier announcement are even slimmer, since nobody announces anything in summer, they have the back to school campaign running until September, and macOS is "coming in fall".

They didn't have an event in October at all last year. I think we might get everything in one event this year: it seems likely that the iPad Pro (both sizes) updates will be pushed to March so that they're in sync. That leaves the iPhone 7, which by all accounts will be a fairly minor change for a non-S year; Apple Watch 2, which admittedly is a bit of an unknown; and the redesigned MBP. That can easily fit into two and a bit hours.

The other Macs may be glossed over, but if they aren't being redesigned they could always silently updated in the weeks before or after the event.

What ties me to macOS and the Apple Ecosystem:

Why I am even holding out is simply that the other options don't appeal to me.

macOS:
  • clean look, stable, fast
  • ideal for my workflow as graphics and ad designer
  • backup built right into it
  • intuitive menue navigation compared to windows
  • no (at least blatant) spying on you
  • spotlight
  • continuity

iOS:
  • secure, fast, uniform look, ease of use
  • continuity

I've tried to "escape" the ecosystem to widen my options in hard- and software, but to be honest, it wasn't successful at all. Win10 turns me off with its spying, still weird and not uniform look when you go into the deeper menues, useless app-store and the "in your face attitude" when it decides to change settings or throw ads and updates at you. Also it's still based on a registry and .dll files which will potentially slow it down in the future. Also there's the bazillion-trillion malwarefiles and viruses for Windows, Defender does a good job though at keeping them at bay. I had the (for me very important) "last places used" feature in windows bug out on me and not working on three different machines and three different installations, this alone makes Win10 useless for me as I work with hundreds of files in dozens of folders each day and lose time navigating to them the old fashioned way.

About iOS, I tried Android because I'd like to have more choice in hardware, replacable battery, dual sims, etc... but it just won't work for me. The integration of google-everything is horrid and I need like 3 different user accounts to make full use of all features on my phone, yes it's customizable but in reality stock android is still the best and compared to that, I still prefer iOS. I feel more secure with iOS and everything makes more sense (to me). So iPhone it is.

All that said, I want to state that I disagree with a lot of what Apple does nowadays:
  • Siri is a gimick most of the time, on iOS and on macOS - yes thats my opinion
  • minimalism gets thrown out the window (OLED bar, iMessage smiley-update)
  • hardly any killer features in sierra, I just hope it runs blazingly fast
  • that photo-memory stuff combined with Siri worries me, it's a bit too "orwellian" for my taste
  • hardware update cycle
  • artificial obsolesence
My thoughts.

The opposite!
Even considering the sadness and the delusion of being here, still waiting, this place is quite nice.
I like be here chilling and having fun with you guys.
:)
Me too, it's the only thing I read every day. In fact I can't leave it alone. I love picking up my phone and getting a little rush when I see there's five new pages. Maybe something happened! Maybe there's been an announcement... Of course there never is, but the wailing and gnashing of teeth is hilarious. I came here in January thinking I wanted a MacBook Pro, but it turns out all I really want is to read more forum posts. This chain has probably given me more enjoyment than if I'd bought the damn laptop!

Yep theres a reason this thread is the most happenin' in all of MR. Good people, good talk, unofficial skylake lounge.

Noone with their mind in the right place thought they would release the MBPs in march, as the processors were not out yet.

I've come here to wait for the SKYLAKE Macbook Pros.
So I want SKYLAKE. Not Kabylake. Non Cannonlake. SKYLAKE.

Why?
Next iteration of Macbook Pro will most likely come with it's own emoji-bar, in galaxy-purple and with a free pair of wayfarers and beat headphones...
