I really hope they don't incorporate the butterfly keyboard in the RMBPs I tried it the other day at the Apple Store, and it felt wayyyyy too spongy and weird. Am I the only one who thinks that?
I think it feels much less spongy and more mechanical because of the steel dome switches but I agree that it feels weird. They will be changing the keyboard but hopefully they add more key travel or they could even use the tweaked scissor mechanism that they use for the new Magic Keyboard.

thanks for sharing of only Dell had a dedicated shop in Austria and an all aluminium build.

Personally I believe Apple and Dell are in a class of their own when it comes down to Notebooks. Although I still don't understand why I should pay 300 $ more for the touch version if I want the uhd display doesn't make sense.

Windows 10 would be a better system if it wasn't such a telemetry monster, allowed disabling updates and had some consistent design language instead of sliders and a mobile based UIs

While we're waiting anyway, can i ask what the problems were with first gen products? We're they really do bad? I mean can't they be fixed at the Apple store or something?

Apple pushes its new tech to market as quickly as possible. It's widely known that first-gen adopters are Apple's extended quality control. I've suffered this and so has my brother. He got the first rMBP and had to get it repaired three times so basically everything was replaced except the case. I bought a first-gem iMac G5 and had similar issues. Just look at the iPhones, it's always the "tick" cycle that has more problems.

First-gen buyers tend to pay more for early adoption, get at least one "crippled spec" so they can save that for the next version and end up with higher rates of problems.

It's not like there's much of a choice though. When a new generation comes out, unless you want to buy refurb or second-hand (or risk eBay) you kind of have to accept it. Just get the extended warranty and hope for the best. It's not like everyone will have problems.

Yep - first gen 13" Retina and had the Display changed twice. Good thing to have Apple Care for 3 years of joy.

Yikes, stuff like this doesn't build confidence in a first time Apple MacBook Pro Purchaser. Really want mine to last 5 years after I purchase the 2016 one...
That's exactly why I asked, I'm also a first time mac purchaser.
But hey, I'll just buy it, and if it keeps working within the return period I'll keep it.
If it stops I guess I'll just have to buy a XPS 13 or Spectre X360.

So when would be the best time to purchase one? I'm looking to get the 13" and you guys are worrying me.

Yeah, I mean, I update my tech pretty frequently, so under normal circumstances I might not have even had it more than two years and would not have experienced any problems at all. I would've updated my rMBP sooner but the 2015 "upgrade" wasn't enough of an upgrade for me. And I decided not to get it fixed because I thought "hey, the Skylake one will be out in June, so three months isn't much of a wait". Oh how innocent I was back then...

I also had the second-gen MBA and had to replace the trackpad twice in the less-than-a-year that I had it. So whatever. I'm buying the first gen Skylake MBP no matter what. I'm done waiting.

It's really a roll of the dice, no one knows for sure. My 2006 MBP (first ever mbp) has no problems, meanwhile i've had an 8600m (2008) die on me, a 330m (2010) that fails the Apple hardware test, and 2011 thats on its way out as well. All three were later revisions of earlier models. First gen products don't spontaneously catch fire or steal your belongings and disappear in the night (typically). If something happens thats why we have AppleCare. Three (or so) strikes and we get a new one.

Just a note for those extra worried (or cheap), if your purchase your device on credit card, you get an extra year added to Apples Manurfacturer warranty. (Which is definitely what I'm going to do) Better yet if you have an Amex I read they will add an additional year to your Apple Care giving you 4 years of protection. I'm doubting Amex will throw a card at a student like me haha, otherwise I would do that.

For all those Kaby Lake waiters: http://wccftech.com/intel-kaby-apollo-lake-nuc-specs-revealed/
KBL-U (probably GT3e, suitable for 13'') will arrive Q1/2017
KBL-H with GT4e (for 15'') still not planned, Skull Canyon (Skylake-H GT4e) prolonged until Q1 2018

Doesn't seem like Kaby Lake will be an option for Apple too soon.

So if Apple is not waiting for KL, I wonder what the hold up is?

Let's assume Apple is not just completely incompetent or lazy and has been working on or waiting on something that is adding an unusual delay to the refresh cycle... What is it?

The only things that jump to mind are...
- A 5K external display solution with USB-C/TB docking that could precipitate the mother of all upgrades where a huge portion of the MacBook Pro user base not only updates their laptop but aging TB displays as well. Perhaps dependent on an eGPU in the display and MacOS Seierra support?
- New built-in high gamut Retina display tech (that may be taking a long time to get quality or yields to acceptable levels)
- Some kind of thermal issue or other hardware bug that's a showstopper (least likely in my opinion given there are lots of other Skylake systems out there)

What else could it be?

I'm confused didn't Intel reassure people that kaby lake was coming this year in the beginning of June ? :/

And what is this Apollo lake and baby canyon oh god :'(

I have a first gen MBP 17" unibody (early 2009) and it has worked without any problems. (I guess they had a little time to work out the kinks since the 15" came a little bit earlier, in october 2008)

The only thing I never got used to is the terrible soundcard in it, a big difference to both my earlier PowerPC systems and also my later intel systems. It's bearable on maxium sound output, but if you lower the volume you can really hear how the bits gets reduced and there is graininess galore. (I know that this how all digital soundcards work, but different models has different ways to mask it, that's for shure!)

My MBP has something I would love to see on future MBP - an anti-glare screen... One can dream, ok? :)

I've been reading this thread for 11 months. Everyday I would drive to school, turn on my battered 2012 MSI laptop with a broken power connector and 20 minutes of battery life, open up this thread, and hope for news.

Last week I started to look at MacBook Pros on eBay. I found a baseline 15" MacBook Pro "used" for $1900 CAN. After all this time telling myself "nope, just wait a little longer... The Mac's will be coming any day now." I gave in...

The new Mac's haven't been announced yet and I finally don't care anymore. To say I'm satisfied with my purchase would be an understatement. This is my first Mac and it's the best thing I've ever had. It also wasn't "used" at all. Just opened box.

Good luck to all you guys still waiting. You're stronger than me. Maybe I'll sell this one around christmas and pick up the new one if it comes out by then. But until then, I'm happy.

I have a 1st gen rmbp from 2012. It had no maintenance issues at all, passed it on to my mom continues to use it without anything breaking. I might wait on the next refresh because they are taking so long there must be a lot of bugs.

Never had problems like others have posted, YMMV. Over the years I've been very surprised at the high quality of early generation apple devices, compared to previous dells we owned. My first gen rMBP has been bulletproof, multiple falls to factory floors, both corners severely dented, and never had an issue with display nor internals. Out of our 2008, 2011, 2012 and 2013 MBPs have had 1 motherboard replaced out of the 4 (the 2011 after my daughter took to college and beat the heck out of it). And on our idevices, our 4 iPads and 4 iPhones are trouble free, some tick releases and some tocks.

Kaby lake is coming, but like others have said, there are tons of variants within the Intel lineup. The processors that Apple uses (the ones with Iris iGPUs) are ALWAYS released later. The initial early lineup is composed of Core Ms, and Core i(X)s but without Iris. A Kaby Lake 13" rMBP would be due Q3-Q4 2017. For the 15" is even worse. There is no planned GT4e Kaby Lake processor, meaning that the next CPU change will occur with Cannonlake in Q4 2018 (just like what is happening with Haswell) if there's no delay.

Thanks for the input, definitely makes me feel more confident. It's obviously scary buying an almost $2,000 laptop for the first time compared to a $600 laptop. The laptop goes from being a daily bang around tool, to my electronic child haha!

After going to the Apple Store the other day and playing around with the 13 in RMBP I almost took my wallet and threw it at the screen. Very hard to hold back especially because the 15 in base model at Best Buy is $1,799.00 USD for students...
