Waiting for Skylake MBP thread

Doesn't mean the full range will be available though. They could launch a limited range of desktop CPUs, which will be fine for the iMac, but no good for MacBook Pros.

Exactly, that IS the caveat, I would fully expect i5 and i7 but it could be four desktop models, no laptop ones.
We will have to wait and see but Intel is more then capable of big scale launches.

I believe they will let the new Retina MacBooks get their attention while orders are now starting to ship and people have been seeing them in-store.

By the time WWDC hits, the current 15" should by updated with bumped specs and Force Touch. We won't see Skylake until they update the whole line early 2016 with thinner models and standard USB-C. My 2¢.

I truly believe you nailed it with this statement. It is a shame, because I would love to see a Skylake MBP before then, but it just isn't going to happen.

Well as discussed, if Apple make a thinner laptop then the chances are they'll have to ditch the other ports like thunderbolt, display port, USB 3, and most likely magsafe.

So I would rather they don't make an already thin enough laptop even thinner and stick in a couple of USB C ports and nothing else, oh expect a headphone jack if your lucky.

You should have read the article I linked to, but here is the quote from the Intel CEO

"We are not going to slow Skylake down. We said it will be a second half of this year. I don’t want to slow it down because it brings a lot of innovation, a lot of new capability to this market." stated Brian Krzanich.

They even state in their financial report they expect to launch it in the second half of 2015. Skylake WILL launch this year.

I did read. It seems you read too much into it. He didn't say what you claimed he said.

Is this a good news ?

Are those mobile cpus?
No more dual cores? Can i realistically hope for a 13 inch MacBook Pro retina,Thunderbolt 3 and quad core?.I'd buy it in a snap.;)

Those are not mobile. But 35-ish TDP mobile Quad cores from Intel have already been a thing. For some reason Apple hasn't been interested in putting them into rMBP 13.

Main reason I think is that they believe most buyers of "Pro" don't really need quad-cores, and would react mostly negative towards the noticeably worse battery-life that Intel's quads currently bring. But that shouldn't have excluded it from a built-to-order option in my opinion.

I waited and waited for years for a 13-inch quad core to be released. Gave up. And since I just gave up I'm sure that the next iteration will have a quad-core option ;)

Using the 14nm process developed for Broadwell and Skylake, Intel could very easily manufacture quad-core 28W processors but Apple would not put them into a 13" MBP because there would not be enough space left on the die for the Iris 6100 graphics. In other words, even with the 14nm process, quad-core plus fast graphics would be under-clocked at 28W. It seems that Apple have decided that for most users, dual-core at about 3.0GHz is better than quad-core at about 2.0GHz.

Once the mobile discrete GPU market is dead and buried, Intel will allocate more die space to adding cores rather than to prioritizing iGPU performance.

The dual cores are here;)

I wonder how close are we to a newly redesigned MBP 13" and 15", my guess is it's either WWDC they'll unveil new laptops or within a 1 year timeframe.

This is what I guess the new MBPs will be

1. Same amount of ports as current retinas
2. Probably thinner as they'll likely further shrink the logic board
3. Butterfly keyboard mechanism but retains the key travel of current rMBP keyboard
4. Externally, it'll look a lot like the current rMBP (taking some design cues from the new MacBook, with all aluminium enclosure, speaker grille on the top of the keyboard, thinner on the sides so they can market the new MacBookPros as more compact then previous generations)
5. Internally, everything will be soldered and glued, so include the ACPP into your purchase total cost as if something gets broken, it'll be an expensive fix.

My guess is that they'll skip the 13" for a moment and focus on the 15" if they talk about the MBP at all at WWDC. the 13" just received an Broadwell update with the new force-pad. It might get an "silent" update in the next year or during an other event, as a closer...

Do you guys really think we will see minor bumps? That's all we've had for a while now, surely it makes sense to wait just a few months longer and go for a redesign with Skylake. If the 15"/14" is ready first, then go with that and discount the 13" and just leave it as is until the chips are ready for that.

It's been a long long wait for a significant update for MBP owners and from the looks of it, most people here are waiting for the big payoff, not just a little speed bump and the same chassis.

In terms of chips, if Apple goes with 14" do you think that will be too small for the chips predicted for a 15" model?

My gut feel is that any redesign won't come until skylake, which in turn won't come until q1 2016. I think we'll get a Broadwell refresh.

Razer is already pulling it off: review link. The Razer uses a less efficient battery tech and a "spacious" layout for the components (SSD/RAM/wireless card). So yes it's possible even without the Apple-design-geeks-efficiency (I have no other word for it)

It's using a i7 QC and a 765M nVidia. If Apple were to use a new Broadwell or Skylade with a 950M or 960M in a 14" I'm sold! Even in a 15" haha!

131 ppi? No thanks.

you guys do realize you're looking at a link from 2013?

The blade was "the" go-to gaming notebook when I got my Haswell. PPI is still a deal breaker today.

just checking.. considering that ppi you guys are looking at is from 2 years ago. the new Blades have a 262ppi.. a bit more than the 13" MBP (227) and 15" MBP (220).

Absolutely- it's a wonder any high end notebook these days doesn't have pixel density like that.

Of course gaming on a small screen doesn't demand it, but for any other work the difference is stark.

Rumoured, based on the specs from wikipedia:
- 2015 launch
- Chips will use the 14 nm process node. Expect some decent battery life
- Support for DDR4 memory
- Support for PCIe 4.0

I also think that this will be the model where dGPUs and Apple will part ways in notebooks. I don't think we'll see a dedicated GPU, even as a BTO option.

What are your thoughts?

Yep, my guess is that the redesign that comes along with Skylake in early 2016 will not have a dedicated GPU, even as a build to order option.

I'm not super happy about that, but I do think that is exactly what will happen.

I know. this means various companies should be able to release similar notebooks now... And even better in terms of (thermal)design, specs, battery life, screen, etc.

Personally my dream consists of:

14 or 16" Screen (edgeless like the XPS13)
i7 QC (since not all programs support GPU acceleration)
16GB RAM
950/960M nVidia card with 2-4GB vRAM.
256-512GB SSD
Thunderbolt 3
"Retina screen"

Ohh and a USB3 port for usb-sticks and such. Other than that and a 3.5mm jack-plug I'm good if if doesn't have a single port. And I think the new rMBPs will be a lot like this since Apple is trying to get rid of "useless" ports. Since TB3 can even charge up to 100W it could very well be possible the new rMBP will get a pair of TB3 ports (which are thinner than the regular TB1 or 2 ports, a pair of USB3.1 and a 3.5mm jack. This could reduce overall height of the case (the edges anyway).
