With Skylake i7-6700K benchmarking 10-15% faster than Haswell 4790K - is this less than you'd expect from 2 generation gap? Does Intel normally do 10-15% per generation? (so e.g. Broadway getting 15% on Haswell, with Skylake getting 15% on Broadwell).

I'd say with Intel's recent obsession with battery life and heat management, 15% is pretty good for a CPU increase and is the biggest jump since Nehalem -> Sandy Bridge.

Sandy Bridge was the last processor upgrade where Intel specifically wanted the CPU performance to increase.

Those are not mobile. But 35-ish TDP mobile Quad cores from Intel have already been a thing. For some reason Apple hasn't been interested in putting them into rMBP 13.

Main reason I think is that they believe most buyers of "Pro" don't really need quad-cores, and would react mostly negative towards the noticeably worse battery-life that Intel's quads currently bring. But that shouldn't have excluded it from a built-to-order option in my opinion.

I waited and waited for years for a 13-inch quad core to be released. Gave up. And since I just gave up I'm sure that the next iteration will have a quad-core option ;)

I am waiting for a 13" with a quad core. Not buying a new laptop without it. Mine is from 2013 so still fine and there is NO spec update other then a quad option that would make me spend another €2200

Not gonna happen until the 15"s get 8 core CPUs.

The 15" will always have double the core count of the 13" as a differentiating factor. Besides, a quad core CPU would be beyond the thermal design of the 13", unless there is a 28W quad core available and assuming that the form factor doesn't get thinner.

The newest desktop roadmap leaks says that GT3e (aka Iris pro 6200) Broadwell chips will launch at the end of Q2 this year. Cannot be long then. Skylake GT2 will follow in Q3. But the Broadwells with 6200 will not be replaced until Q1 2016 which is as far as the roadmap goes.
Therefore the Iris Pro Skylake chips probably are also far in the future and will come Q2 2016 most likely. Until then it is Broadwell but that should not be long now.

I think the people hoping for a 15" Skylake notebook anytime soon are out of luck.

What about those of us waiting for a 13" Skylake? When can we expect these? Q3 2015?

Well from this roadmap in particular nothing can be inferred about dual cores.
Chances are though that a 13" skylake may come much earlier. There once was a roadmap that said Q3 for the U series but the big GPU U series often is later so I guess sometime towards the end of summer might be possible. The mobile roadmap is still a mystery.

Speaker Grille on 13 inch rMBP?

I had a look at both the current Retina Macbook Pro and the new Macbook Retina at the Apple Store yesterday.

The new Macbook does look gorgeous if underpowered and it seems to me most likely the rMBP will be redesigned at some point in the next 24 months and will take a few of the Macbook's qualities.

I was wondering what people who own the rMBP think of the current speakers on the machine? I don't see the speaker grille on the 13 inch model but on the 15 inch the speaker grille is placed on either side of the chassis.

On the new Macbook the speaker grille is set right above the keyboard and gives very good sound.

In the next rMBP is it likely the design changes could see the speaker grille placed in the same location above the keyboard. I believe the new butterfly keyboard will also make its way to the rMBP.

I have read multiple people saying the MacBook has great speakers for the size it is. I personally haven't tested it out, I just have the 15" rMBP and the speakers are beyond amazing, clear sound with good base and I love the switching from each side when watching a movie that supports surround sound. My last rMBP didn't have quite as nice sounding speakers.

Coming from a mid-2012 MBP, the rMB was imo okay, but the early-2015 rMBP was a definite step up.

The push for Surface 4 in a way is a good thing right?
If Surface 4 is going Skylake, and there are signs that this will be in line with Windows 10, so August - September time - doesn't that hint that Skylake-U (15W at least) will be out, so making likelihood of Skylake 28W with GT3e coming out at same time? (Not sure about Skylake-H, or under clocked Skylake-S - seems only some 65W have turned up so far.

The old Jan rumor at http://chinese.vr-zone.com/141850/i...ch-skylake-s-for-desktop-diy-market-01302015/ showed relative timings - Skylake S and U happening fairly close together.

Mac mini, MBP 15", iMac, Mac Pro...

That's a good point. If Skylake starts being touted in other brands hardware then it puts some pressure on to keep up with the neighbors.

Take these for for what they are worth but:

Both Asus and Dell have stated their more powerful notebooks will be going straight to Skylake. Dell stated this back in Jan/Feb.

There was a post on Notebook forums about the new 2015 Alienware 15" 4k notebook going to Broadwell later this year. AW support said they were skipping Broadwell and going straight to Skylake.

BTW: The 2015 Alienware 15" 4k notebook has a gorgeous display. I am hoping Apple offers a 15" in 4k. If you thought the 4K-Chimei-inn-60mbps demo (the mp4 version not the god awful YouTube version) was jaw dropping on the MBPr, it is simply amazing on the 15" 4k display. Those who said 4k is a waste on a 15" display haven't seen one in person.

The rMBPs can barely power their displays as it is. Until or unless they're able to put much better graphics cards in these machines, I couldn't care less about 4k. Especially when I always plug into an external monitor for serious work at home.

I too am still waiting on Skylake to refresh my laptop (mid-2012 retina). I feel rather certain that we're going to see a redesign with Skylake. The fact that the new Macbook came out in a variety of colors makes me think that the pro will as well. I think they'll do it with Skylake rather than Broadwell as it will coincide with wireless charging which will require a redesign of sorts anyway.

My prediction (or wishlist) for Skylake MBPs:
* Space Grey & Gold color options.
* Nvidia 950M graphics (high end model).
* Wireless charging
* USB-C in place of the MagSafe port
* 12 hour battery life
* Forcetouch trackpad
* 14" and 16" (same form factor as current 13" and 15", just without bezel)
* 0.64" thick
* 16gb/32gb
* 512gb/1tb
* 4k screen

As long as it comes with a more powerful or newer dGPU, faster flash, better iGPU, and CPU, I am totally okay with this update. ;)

I think Broadwell is fine, (not the greatest update in terms of CPU but Skylake will be the very similar to Broadwell (as broadwell was to Haswell) once Skylake is released... so I honestly am okay with Broadwell as long as it runs good.
Though I'm still thinking Apple might wait until Fall/Winter to release a Skylake 15" rMBP ;)

I'm generally less worried about CPU performance than anything else. If I need to do hardcore crunchy stuff, I usually use desktops at work n' such. What I'm really excited for is the faster SSD PCI-E interface, faster RAM, and faster GPU. All of these things will really make that new 15" scream :D

Someone posted that article in the Broadwell thread as well. Basically, this article's accuracy looks dubious at best. There of course could still be a Broadwell MBP soon, but not as the article states. Both the i5-5657C and i7-5775C are 65W DESKTOP processors, not mobile processors. There is no chance either shows up in a MacBook Pro.

According to this article just posted in the 'Waiting for Broadwell' thread, the answer to a June Skylake MBP is, No! bummer:(

Broadwell is the die shrink of Haswell, but Skylake is the redesign. That's why a lot of us are holding out for Skylake. I've seen it written that Skylake will be the most significant proc released by Intel in a decade.

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro and from what everyone is saying on here I feel like I should wait off on making a purchase on a pro until skylake

That's what I keep reading and why it's definitely a Toc as opposed to Broadwell's meager Tic.

I still think Skylake won't come because Intel will release the chips with the bigger GT3/4 GPUs much later and only start with the GT2 chips that Apple hasn't used so far. Skylake will have a staggered release just like Haswell and Broadwell. Everybody hoping for a Skylake notebook anytime soon would have to expect Apple to go for GT2 parts which they are unlikely to do.
It is the Broadwell GT3e parts that will be released soon and they won't be replaced by Skylake GT4e parts or the 25W GT3e part for a good long while.

Which parts are needed for skylake mbpros? I thought it was skylake-U scheduled for Q3 2015. GTx is the graphics element only??
