I need a macbook within the next 2-3 weeks, do u recommend buying from the official apple store or an independent third party one

I don't really care about size (13" vs 15"), but I want to keep my macbook for several years. Most of the usage will be Email, web surfing, Microsoft Office, Music and Photos. But My wife and I are both getting into photography and would like to be able to use Photoshop or some other photo editing software. Based on the usage of Photoshop and how long I want to keep this rMBP, would I be better off with the upgraded graphics card? or would the new iris pro do fine with editing photos and my future needs (5 years (ish)). My 9 year old White Macbook can barely boot up any more let alone run many apps. lol.

Don't get a dGPU. From what I understand, processing power and RAM are more important. Plus, you'd have to pay for the top model (if they keep the same structure).

I guess it depends on what level of Photoshop you're planning for, but honestly it sounds like you'd even be fine with a Retina MacBook. All the uses you mention, even basic Photoshop, work perfectly well on a MacBook.

Advanced Photoshop features improved by a dedicated graphics processor include liquify and 3D translations, maybe some advanced filters etc. but all of those things are still possible with integrated graphics, just slightly slower. Video work, on the other hand, is an entirely different animal.

The biggest feature I'd look for as a (semi-pro) photographer is Apple's color calibration seen on the 9.7 inch iPad Pro. If that hits the new MBP it will be huge for photographers (though I'm not quite ready to give up standard monitor calibration for perfect color management at the moment).

Short answer: skip the graphics card if you expect to only use Photoshop at a fairly basic level. Go for it if you expect to start doing video or if you expect to use Photoshop's advanced features heavily AND often.

i5 mobile chips have hyperthreading
the 15w i5 6360U have two cores and 4 threads

Intel's naming for it's mobile dual cores are a complete fustercluck.

The mobile quad cores actually make sense, since it's consistent with the desktop line. i5 6300HQ = 4C, no hyperthreading.

For the mobile chips, just look:

http://ark.intel.com/compare/91169,91497,88192,88194,91167,91163,88190,88193,91164,91160,91166

Literally the only the difference between a 15W or 28W i5 or i7(all 2C, 4T) is the clock speed and a smaller cache on a few of the lower end i5s.

It use be that the dual core i7s would always have a larger cache at least.

Also, graphics (gt3e vs gt2) and edram.

I bought from a third party and Apple refused to acknowledge my purchase date, so be careful and make sure they are on Apple's "recommended vendor" (or whatever it's called) list.

If Sierra is to be released sometime in October as this sleuthing from ComputerWorld states, and if the new MBP's will launch with Sierra, we're looking at an October release. So, two likely scenarios:

1. Unveiled in September at iPhone event with pre orders and then release in mid-Oct.
2. Second Mac only event in October with next day ordering

With Tim getting more and more political, I'm guessing there will be an October event that will introduce the new rMBP with an Hillary Clinton edition. This will give them more time to go through the new Email deletion software

I actually LOL'd...

I just got my late 2011 15" battery replaced. So its basically a new laptop now except for case and keyboard. Im good for another 5 years... new MBP who needs one - not me!

Oh wait. I want one. And at this age (and company buying), want = need...

Please reveal in Sept. release in Oct. as the current dreamers are dreaming!

It's quite interesting: Apple's entire product lineup is due for a refresh as their current offerings are sitting out there left hanging, while technology passes them by.

This is intentional and really quite gutsy. Any other CEO would panic and say what are we doing? Why have we not incorporated one tiny cpu upgrade and maybe added another port to the mac and then shipped it? That would give us some breathing room for 3-6 months. Why have we not put out a standalone 4k screen? We would not lose money on that. It's money there for the taking and will tide people over for a year. Why have we not stuck in a better camera on the iPhone with optical stablization, or added a little more battery life, or made it waterproof, or really, anything? Why are we releasing the same iPhone as last year in a few weeks? Why is the watch not getting any love? It's been a year and a half.

Apple, though, really doesn't seem to care, and they are showing their conviction and loyalty towards their principles. They really do not want to make as much money as humanly possible, because they are leaving money on the table. Almost no companies do that, especially those as large as Apple. I really do believe that Apple would rather sit on the sidelines, taking the criticism, losing money, losing fanboys, until the technology they want matures enough to execute their highly idealized vision of what they want their products to be.

And guess what: Apple has left a gaping hole for some other company to exploit, but no one has. That's on the other competitors. Consumers can complain but they aren't leaving in droves because they know that no one else has caught up to the "old technology" that Apple currently employs. Every single product they have is out-spec'd by windows and android in many ways, but people don't leave. They whine, but they don't leave. Do I enjoy paying ridiculous prices? No. Would I leave if Windows offered a coherent touchpad? Have i looked around, only to find that premium windows laptops cost as much as a mac? Yes I have done this research only to find that leaving doesn't make financial sense unless I"m willing to use a far inferior product.

I don't believe that customers are that loyal to apple. They will leave if someone makes something better. But no one has, so Apple doesn't need to innovate as fast as we would like them to because quite frankly, they're that far ahead. If the competition would bring something better to market, you'd bet that we would see Apple innovate faster. Mark my words, I think that the supply chain--owning your entire product from chips to software to distribution, is impossible to beat. Just like Amazon has an insurmountable lead, so does Apple.
I agree with all of this, except Apple doesn't have far and away the best smartphones (or mobile OS) anymore and going by what the new iPhone is rumored to be, it doesn't look like they'll do much better in that field until next year.

Touch capable OLED screens are not exactly new technology. You just specify the form factor and resolution and make a few calls to Chinese Factory X.

Yes the parts aren't necessarily new but the assembly process of constructing the new MBP will be on its first iteration. Basic changes like there now being multiple screens to connect and test translates to a protracted assembly process which is likely to be slower than their current model. Sure - some extra connectors and extra system tests for a second screen may not seem like much, but when you extrapolate minor increases in assembly and quality assurance testing on the scale that Apple products are manufactured, you wind up little increases can have big impacts on production capacity.

Good morning everyone! My insider source (my dog Gussie) predicts the new MBP will be released on October 26, on a birthday of this thread. You'll notice I didn't mention which year.

Hah, that's actually my birthday too. Never noticed that. Would indeed be an awesome present.
<hijack>I'd like to change my birthday so I can get in line for that present.

My "current" birthday is July 11 - 7/11 - and I'm so tired of 35 years of Slurpees on that date from my friends that I could just scream...</hijack>

I did some research on past events, it seems that Apple sends out invites under 2 weeks before the event, with at least 7 days notice. Maybe we'll have confirmation of an event with invites being sent out next week. Still no guarantee of Macs at the event though.

5 more years? Tell that to your AMD graphics card...

I sure hope so :) There's been more optimism in the thread lately so I hope it pays off. I don't think I can take another event this year with no word on the new Macs...
I don't want this to be the case, but I'd assume there'd be some reference to the OLED things in the Sierra betas by now if we were seeing new Macs any time soon. At this point I'm just assuming they're coming when the Nintendo NX gets released.
