Does anyone think there may be a dual core entry level 15" model, with a quad core higher end one?

I quite like the lineup proposed by a writer over at 9to5mac some months ago here:

Entry-level 12-inch MacBook €1449
Exec-spec 12-inch MacBook €1799
‘Good’ 14-inch MacBook Pro €1999
‘Better’ 14-inch MacBook Pro (same spec as 16-inch model) €2299
‘Good’ 16-inch MacBook Pro €2499
‘Better’ 16-inch MacBook Pro €2999

All come by default with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB SSD, possible updates include 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD and a 1 TB 5400rpm drive.

(I'm only joking about the 1 TB spinner.)

The rule used to be "right after macbreak weekly", but then that show became less relevant or something, because lately they've been sent out before the show.

It's quite interesting: Apple's entire product lineup is due for a refresh as their current offerings are sitting out there left hanging, while technology passes them by.

This is intentional and really quite gutsy. Any other CEO would panic and say what are we doing? Why have we not incorporated one tiny cpu upgrade and maybe added another port to the mac and then shipped it? That would give us some breathing room for 3-6 months. Why have we not put out a standalone 4k screen? We would not lose money on that. It's money there for the taking and will tide people over for a year. Why have we not stuck in a better camera on the iPhone with optical stablization, or added a little more battery life, or made it waterproof, or really, anything? Why are we releasing the same iPhone as last year in a few weeks? Why is the watch not getting any love? It's been a year and a half.

Apple, though, really doesn't seem to care, and they are showing their conviction and loyalty towards their principles. They really do not want to make as much money as humanly possible, because they are leaving money on the table. Almost no companies do that, especially those as large as Apple. I really do believe that Apple would rather sit on the sidelines, taking the criticism, losing money, losing fanboys, until the technology they want matures enough to execute their highly idealized vision of what they want their products to be.

And guess what: Apple has left a gaping hole for some other company to exploit, but no one has. That's on the other competitors. Consumers can complain but they aren't leaving in droves because they know that no one else has caught up to the "old technology" that Apple currently employs. Every single product they have is out-spec'd by windows and android in many ways, but people don't leave. They whine, but they don't leave. Do I enjoy paying ridiculous prices? No. Would I leave if Windows offered a coherent touchpad? Have i looked around, only to find that premium windows laptops cost as much as a mac? Yes I have done this research only to find that leaving doesn't make financial sense unless I"m willing to use a far inferior product.

I don't believe that customers are that loyal to apple. They will leave if someone makes something better. But no one has, so Apple doesn't need to innovate as fast as we would like them to because quite frankly, they're that far ahead. If the competition would bring something better to market, you'd bet that we would see Apple innovate faster. Mark my words, I think that the supply chain--owning your entire product from chips to software to distribution, is impossible to beat. Just like Amazon has an insurmountable lead, so does Apple.

That's not how the i5 and i7 naming works, there are i7 dual cores (larger caches) and quad core i5's (no hyper-threading, larger thermal envelope than the dual-core models).
i5 mobile chips have hyperthreading
the 15w i5 6360U have two cores and 4 threads

Not all of them, but the ones in the MBP certainly do. Thank god. Otherwise this 13" wouldn't have lasted me as long as it did... (Almost three years, which for me is very long)

Apple's back to school promo ends on 5th September, would they really announce new models just 2 days later?

I think they'd prefer to announce new model on the day right after all stores closed.

So yes. This is not a new approach, they routinely time it this way.

the BTS promo seems like a way to incentivise purchases of the current Macs (i.e. deplete extra stock which would otherwise go into clearance), so it makes sense for it to end right before they announce new Macs, which is hopefully what's happening.

In that case, I think I will order one in the current promotion on the 4th/5th but not open it to hedge my bets. In case the new models are uninspiring or much more expensive I will keep it, if not I will return it new and unused for a refund and buy the new models.

My Strix RX 470 should be arriving just as Apple launches the new MBPs, so September will be a good month for me.

When my desktop finally gives up and dies, I can hopefully take it out and pair with my MBP via TB3.

I am not going to leave because macOS. I did consider a Hackintosh laptop though. My biggest gripe about rMBP is not actually related to its insides but the fact that the sharp edges in front remove skin from my hands. Yes, I know I'm typing on it wrong, but somehow none of the laptops I ever owned before did that.

I'm not a trackpad fetishist but this one is awesome.

No TB3 / USB-C though

Apple.
Apple already include Polaris 11 drivers in 10.12 betas whereas there is no 10x0 web drivers so the chances that we get GTX parts is 0 to -5.
Msi has had usb c since November of last yr.

Would I leave if Windows offered a coherent touchpad?

this!
the current touchpad (force touch aside) is out since the 2008!! how come no one else has been able to even come close to it???

edit: i might be wrong but i think microsoft should implement some OS-level gestures to raise the bar with laptop trackpads. now is all left to the OEMs and most of them do an awful job: i still use friends' laptops where to scroll you have to drag up-down on the right side of the trackpad, ffs!

What do you mean by this? Just that the demand will be so high at first?

High demand paired with a redesigned chassis and a possible OLED touch-screen. New tech sometimes means yields are lower and production capacity is lower than a process that's been operating for years and refined for efficiency. So if there's a whole lot of new stuff in the new MBP there's also a pretty good chance that Apple won't be able to manufacture them at the same rate as what they're shipping today.

Combine that with the spike in demand from customers who have been waiting and you potentially wind up with supply constraints.

Touch capable OLED screens are not exactly new technology. You just specify the form factor and resolution and make a few calls to Chinese Factory X.
