HP recently announced the HP ZBook Studio with the Iris Pro Graphics P580 option available in Q1 2016, hope new early 2016 15" MBP's...

Nice finding. Here's the quote for everyone to read:

While Intel's newest Iris Pro Graphics pack plenty of muscle (the Iris Pro Graphics P580 option will be available in Q1 2016), those who need even more beef can opt for the Nvidia Quadro M1000M with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory; that's the same as in the Dell. Apple recently switched to AMD's Radeon R9 M370X, but it also comes with 2GB of GDDR5 memory.

I'm in the market for an upgrade as I freelance and have to take a laptop into work on occasion...so I'm hoping the new MacBook Pro will arrive in Q1, 2016.

I'd rather not move over to windows as my home set-up is Mac, but would like 32gb ram, the 4K screen ( got to admit the smaller form factor of the dell looks great!)
Skylake etc etc...and all this seems to be landing in Jan for Windows users!

I've even been checking out the Lenovo P50/70 for the extra power...:O
Ideally I'd like a 16/17" MacBook Pro with more oomph, but guess that ship's sailed a long time ago for Apple...

I understand the line of buy when you need it but I can't really see Apple leaving the market open for three or so months where punters like me may be tempted by rival products!?!?

Perhaps I'm wrong and this is wishful thinking?

I am almost 100% convinced Apple will not by launching anything with Skylake.

Skylake refresh for MacBooks will be during Q1 2016. Skylake based 27" iMac is already available...

Kaby Lake based computers will not begin to appear until Q4 2016. Apple released Broadwell based MBP's in March & May 2015 and if you think they will release nothing until Q4 2016 at the earliest then I'm really baffled with your logic.

The 12" MacBook by your logic would go from April 2015 to Q4 2016/Q1 2017 with no refresh. It doesn't add up.

I said it before, but I believe that for most people switching to another platform is a much bigger hassle for most than waiting another month or two for an updated model or buying an old one. (You have to figure out how to transfer your data, get the same software or change your licenses, change the format of your external drives etc.) Therefore probably wishful thinking. Which does not mean Apple will not have the MacBooks ready at the same time as the windows guys. I just don‘t think switchers are a big concern for Apple at the moment.

Maybe one could argue the other way around, that people who wait to switch to a mac would rather not switch if no new hardware is not available, but even this I would not believe. Most people do not care anyway.

By the way, has anyone here tried what the response from the Apple store guys is when you ask them new intel chips around the corner? I mean, for sure they have a standard answer for this, maybe not word for word, but in general.

A few days ago I spoke to an Apple employee that I have been dealing with for a couple of years and his answer was all over the place. He said it could be January for the anniversary or around summer if Apple skips Skylake due to being late to the party.

I don't have any statistical proof, but I think the Surface Pro/Book may have won (and will win) over many potential Macbook buyers. I can't speak for the majority, but I myself decided on the SP4 for various reasons of which Skylake was a big factor.

Although I returned it due to software problems, I think many in my situation will ultimately get the Surface, especially in the upcoming holiday season. Had the rMBP been updated, it would have been a no-brainer on getting the Macbook.

I am very curious why skylake was a bigger factor in your decision then the fact that the surface is a completely different machine then a rMBP and uses a completely different software stack.

I'm really just a general user who's looking for the best quality product (no loyalty to either Windows or Mac). In the past, no comparison between software - Windows was such a pain to use (probably the cause of many premature balding). However, Windows 10 now seems relatively stable and very usable.

Hardware-wise though, nothing on the Windows side came close to Apple products (which is why I had been waiting impatiently for the updated rMBP). However, when the Surface Pro 4 was announced with its excellent hardware and latest specs (inclusion of Skylake), I found it hard to resist.

I personally think these two devices are equally good in terms of hardware - both top class. The Surface has better display, speakers and form factor (I admit, arguable), whereas the Macbook has superior build quality, keyboard and trackpad. Since the new Surface was available now and who knows when the Macbook will be updated, I folded.

So to answer your question, it isn't really about the performance gain of Skylake but rather the up-to-date factor and timing/availability of the Surface. I really don't want to kick myself for getting the Macbook now only to have it updated in a few months, and I'm sure many buyers will be in my situation this Christmas season.

I understand the up-to-date factor, I mean that is the same reason why I hang out here. However I do not understand why you would try to decide between a surface pro 4 and a rMBP. I mean short look at Geekbench reveals that even the "old" (current) rMBP reaches about 100-300 points more than the Surface both in single and multicore tests? So you just wanted something new? If that is the case I think Apple can and will not compete with PC makers on that level, they just stick to their rhythm of about 1 phone and 1 tablet a year and a mac whenever they see fit.

I say this as someone who used to work in Apple retail.

Mac Rumours knows more than any apple retail employee. Senior management feed down absolutely nothing. An employee claiming to be in the know is 1) lying and 2) would be sacked quicker than you can say "skylake".

How can Apple be late to the party with a processor that has not been launched yet?

Answers on a postcard to: I can explain the impossible competition c/o this thread.

I don't think the switch is as big as it once was, re: external drives, I'm using Paragon NTFS already for data transfer as some clients are windows based.

Transferring licenses would be the biggest issue but then I'd need to load software onto any new system anyhow and I usually prefer to start from a clean slate rather than do any kind of back-up.

I think my point still stands in that if the hardware gap widens too much for too long people will be tempted away...whatever the 'rights or wrongs/facts and figures' of the issue, its just human nature to want the 'latest and greatest'...without it our sales and marketing teams would be redundant!

P.S- I'm very much in the Mac camp, and have found their products reliable and good value for money, heck I've still got a 2010 17" MBP in operation and useful!

The only way people will switch is if all of the programs they need day to day are covered in Windows or visa versa. Adobe products are a good example.

It looks like most people think the new macbook pros are coming Q1. If you had to guess, which month do you think is more likely: January or March? I can wait until early January. If I knew it was March I would go ahead and get the one now.

Could be anytime between then, all depends on when Intel delivers the chips in sufficient quantities. But I think it'll be the earlier side of the quarter.

Disagree. The current machine is great and will sell well regardless. The MBP is not a huge income earner for Apple (unlike iPhone/iPad/App Store). I think it will be more like Q2 (i.e. WWDC). Better to wait till then and get it perfect. It's a very important machine to the developer community, nevermind that it only accounts for a tiny slice of Apple's profits.

I would guess between late January and end of Februar, just based on what happened so far.
Longest stretch between updates so far was 280 days which would mean late February.

Though technically the update was 251 days ago since that's when the 13" rMBP was updated.

And probably Apple is only waiting for Intel to release the processor for the 15" rMBP… it is all just speculation.

I just hope it's sooner than later, my MBP brick is puttering along and with my new travel schedule the bulk isn't ideal. I'm trying soooo hard to resist the XPS.
