Random posts? Have you seen how many people have issues?

Yes, I have played around with both the Skylake based XPS 13 & 15, courtesy of Dell. The 13” model is more or less identical to the Broadwell based version, with the same flaws, namely the woeful touchpad & other quirks like the ridiculously placed webcam. The build quality was so-so. The XPS 15 given to me to evaluate didn’t even sit flush on the desk properly, it wobbled. There was lighbleed and things like that which reminded me that the machine was most definitely a Dell.

The issues I experienced with both seem to mirror the complaints that other people had. It’s a shame as Dell came close to producing some great machines, but I couldn’t spend money on a poorly assembled notebook which is supposed to be ‘premium’. If it was £600 I could forgive some of the shortcomings.

I’ve read lots of so-called professional reviews, they seemed to briefly touch upon some of the issues & claimed that most of them would be “fixed with the fall update” which is nonsense. I’m not sure which reviews you read, but in my experience there’s only 5 or 6 places I would say give good professional reviews & most of them are not mainstream media websites/publications.

I appreciate being called an Apple fanboy. It makes total sense as I make and have always made my living in a Windows environment.

A lot of Apple fans want a tiny bezel, where do you think the webcam will end up if that happens? Hmm

The XPS is made out of aluminum (like Apple) and carbon fiber. Poor quality?

You also just happened to ignore me mentioning those "premium" retina screens peeling off...

Im a fan of Apple before any other product, I actually haven't owned a PC in about 8 years. However, to call the XPS poor quality and not premium is a joke. Its very much premium and if it wasn't Windows I would have thrown my money at Dell without hesitation. It's an awesome laptop.

It's not a joke to call it poor quality. Did you read my post? The XPS 15 didn't even fit flush on my desk! It wobbled! Is that good quality? Other people have had the same issue and either sent them back to Dell or put a piece of foam on the base to even out the wobble. I shouldn't have to do that with a machine with the configuration I was testing that would have cost £1700.

The XPS wants to be premium, Dell even pretends it is premium and charges accordingly. Unfortunately it's just a missed opportunity. Dell are on the right tracks, maybe next year they will fix some of the hardware issues and perhaps invest in a little QC.

There's things to like about the XPS 13 & 15. The screens are excellent, especially the display on the XPS 15 (too bad about the bleed though). And the specification is very good (depending on what you configured, obviously). As said above though, the hardware defects and issues are inexcusable for machine's that cost as much as the XPS's do.

If people like them and they don't get a lemon then I'm sure they'll be happy. For me, I expect a premium product for premium money and the XPS series still isn't it.

I think after what they have done with the Mac Pro, there is a small chance of a machine with this spec emerging from Apple. Something like a redesigned 16-17" rMBP which is truly a top of the line machine unveiled at WWDC to reiterate that Apple is caring for their "pro" market. Small chance.

I'd say there's virtually zero chance of a 17" MBP. Apple discontinued the last one for a reason. That being said, a 16" MBP wouldn't be completely unlikely. As others have pointed out, the 13" rMBP actually has a 13.3" screen, while the 15" rMBP has a 15.4" screen. Adopting smaller bezels (like Dell's Infinity Display) would allow Apple to increase screen sizes without significantly enlarging the laptop chassis as a whole. In that case, moving to a 12" rMB, 14" rMBP, and 16" rMBP lineup would be fairly logical.

I was thinking about buying XPS15 2015 version, now I am hesitating now....Macbook Pro really has top quality control and best customer service...

They dropped the 11.6" MacBook Air screen size for 12", so they will drop the 13.3" for 14 and the 15.4" for 16".

I would like it if they increased the resolution or had an option for 3360 x 2100. My pre-retina Macbook was 1680 x 1050, so I'd prefer if I could have that as the base resolution and scale up from there if I want more screen space.

How about we agree that we hope Apple improves upon an already very effective DPI scaling they already use? That way we can all pretty much use whatever resolution we want...

I know the first thing I do when I get my hands on a rMBP 15 to use is raise the scaling to "like 1080p"

Well you can do that on the current Retina Macbook Pro. The issue is that you lose some of the "retina." This is why I'm hoping they will increase the actual resolution, or have an BTO option for it.

I will laugh so hard if apple announce a new Macbook Pro Retina 15 with a Broadwell CPU. ;):apple:
I'm guessing they want to show a slide at the next presentation of an all new 15" that shows a big increase in cpu/gpu in comparison to the "last gen" MacBook Pro using Skylake in the new one to get a good reaction, and therefore why they've been happy using the Haswell all this time.

well, we know it's 1h2016? that's soon-ish. we know it's 4e, 128mb edram? We can suppose performance based on the broadwell configurations as well, but availability is still really a question.

CalDigit seams to bet quite big on USB-C: http://www.caldigit.com/USB-C/

Most of the companies pushing USB-C accessories have "pre-order" on their buy button. I don't see any USB-C to lightning cable offered from Apple. I have yet to buy any accessories to my rMB from third parties yet, though I own both the digital multiport and usb adapter from Apple.

I hate the adapters a bit now, since I am always hunting for the adapters, as I use them with different devices in different settings. I'm looking forward to thinner quad core MacBooks. Let's hope they include a SD card reader as it is the main purpose of using USB ports now.

When I think about it, all my backups are wireless or automated on workstations. No real need for USB at the moment, except for charging my MB. 99.9% of my content is downloaded. Almost never obtained from external and physical sources. I understand backups in remote or rural areas may need an external hard drive because of low data coverage or expensive dataplans, but then you may buy a dedicated cable going from USB-A to USB-C to hook up your backup device.

They dropped the 11.6" MacBook Air screen size for 12", so they will drop the 13.3" for 14 and the 15.4" for 16".

I like it. 16" Skylake Retina Macbook Pro for me please. I have been holding onto my 17" MBP since Feb 2011 because a 15" screen is too big of a downgrade. At 16" its still smaller and I would prefer 17" but it would take the sting out of it a bit compared to 15.4".

News everyone!

January 2016 is the release date of the new Skylake 28w CPU with Iris Pro (rMBP 13). But there is no words about Skylake-H (rMBP 15) we only have HP's information and it says 1H 2016.

If it's delayed too much, it will be very close to Kaby Lake launch at Q3 2016 and only a few months from the KB - Iris Pro version (both -U and -H series) at 1Q 2017.

My guess...

We could see an early 2016 update but only for the 13 inch model. Maybe a redesign with 14-inch, but I don't know what to think about the 15 inch model. They could skip skylake and release a 16-inch 5k capable at 2017. What do you think?
