Hmm, I was just looking at some of the concepts floating around and realized they are placing the Fn button as if this will remain on the keyboards, while at the same time removing Esc. System-critical shortcuts and software rely on Esc, whereas Fn was primarily used to switch off function keys (F1-F12). Given those are gone, I think it's safe to speculate that we could be getting used to Esc on the bottom row.

Edit: Looking at the OLED spacing and the anticipated location of a TouchID power button in the upper right, I would double down on my wager. I imagine that if an app locks (e.g., crashes) your OLED screen, the Force Quit shortcut (Cmd+Option+Esc) would remain accessible. /speculation

Windows10 is 'wacky' as you say. I am constantly encountering ridiculous issues that I have never found comparable on OSX or linux.

OSX is not perfect of course. and the interaction between iOS and OSX is strained as there is an obsession among all tech companies to shift everything to the cloud. some things simply cannot be customised the way i want, but generally the experience is consistent and productive.

hardware wise, i am driven mad when trying to use external disks and monitors with a rMB.

So far so good on Windows 10, no issues even after the anniversary update, equally I do think it`s more down to the choice of hardware than anything else. Certainly Windows 10 is more powerful and flexible than OS X, however the cost of this can be highly frustrating for many.

Right now I don't think either OS is great, although I like the direction MS is going, don't care for where Apple is heading, with it`s bland, flattened, low contrast UI, which seems totally counter intuitive to usability & readability. It`s certainly not going to entice me to work with iToys.

If I just needed a desktop for home use, likely it would be on Linux or BSD and be done with the big two commercial OS`s.

Thanks @MareLuce, but the worst wait was for a Cinema Display with a MagSafe2 connector. I waited 5 years, and then they simply discontinued the line! And the Mac Pro (desktop) customers may have something to say about long waits too.

That said, I have been ready to throw money at the next rMBP worthy of an upgrade since February last year, and am still hoping it will have been worth the wait!

Maybe they will give you the chance to do so ;) right now they are only offering an open window :|

Just assembled one myself, and put in a 1080 GTX, and waiting for Nvidia drivers :apple:. Great to pick your own hardware instead of waiting for some right time determined by a company that seems to focus most of energy of gimmicks. I like the iPhone, but computers are not their priority nor something I would want to invest in. They have killed of all their Pro software and abandoned their swift adaption of new hardware. Time to move on. I believe the OLED panel will be like 3D touch. Nice to show off, but not something I would miss...on a Windows laptop or an Android phone.

The only thing evolving for desktops and laptops are graphics card. Intel haven't offered any substantial performance bump since Sandy Bridge. Apple isn't known for embracing advanced and updated graphics in the post Jobs era. Jobs lived in the age of computers, and most of his time at Apple was about laptops and desktops. It's hard to tell if things would have been different.

Buying a laptop doesn't make the same sense that it did in 2010.

My best guess is we'll see invatations going out Wednesday's a week before the event. Any later then this and I'd say we won't be having an event on September 7th.

The fact that Tim Cook of loaded a large number of share right before a romoured event is highly suspicious. Apple share always increase in value right before and directly after an iPhone event. Especially if they are going to be planning on realising a new MacBook also.

Seems like Tim has some insider information and anticipates that investors are not going to be happy relatively soon.

A week before the event is too late if the invites have not come in so far I suspect the event is happening on the 7th September.

They certainly will not be released - maybe showcased. I do not think we will get 'available today'.

At this point - everyone is most likely satisfied with ANY life sign out of Cupertino in terms of their complete Mac lineup.

i just noticed the back to school promo ends on September 5th before the iPhone event. So if the mbps aren't announced at the event you can't even console yourself with the promo. worst of both worlds.

edit: unless you order it before and take it back after the event if mbp is announced...

Ok so it looks like my wait might soon be over. My 2012 MPB trackpad seems like its on the way out, although I can still navigate it will no longer generate a click. I've got a genius bar appointment scheduled for next week but I'm not even sure I want to get the machine repaired at this point.

I'm considering my options very carefully. It looks like i'm going to need another computer imminently I could buy a 2015 Macbook Pro but I kind of resent dropping that kind of cash on a machine with outdated hardware that is likely to be updated at some point between now and the end of the year, I'm not sure there is a whole lot of value in the iMac line and I would prefer the portability of a notebook, so that just leaves the Macbook (12inch) which is a beautiful machine but i'm not sure it gives me the power I need and I'm not a huge fan of the keyboard either.

I suppose I could carry on with my current MBP with a mouse and wait for the updated Macbook Pro but i'm not sure I even trust Apple to serve my professional needs adequately anymore. If Xcode ran on Windows I don't think I would ever buy another Mac again.

This wait for the new Pro notebooks is reminiscent of the wait for Apple to update the Mac Pro prior to 2013 and look what happened there. For all the "Can't innovate my ass" fanfare the Mac Pro hasn't been touched since. Is the same going to happen with the laptops?

Really frustrated at being beholden to Apple for computers that are seemingly an afterthought. It will be very interesting to see what the reaction is when the September event comes and goes with no update to the Macbook Pro. Lets be honest that is looking very likely at this stage.

Just reading your speculations all I could think of is how this rumored OLED bar as a gimmick solving a 'problem' that doesn't exist.

That, along with a new MBP that only has usb-c ports and requires adapters for anything else, this thing better have something amazing (like a kickass video card) for me to even vaguely consider buying.

Except for the OLED gimmick, the new MBP's probably won't be much more powerful or advanced. Yes, you'll get a 15% speed bump, but along with only usb-c ports and zero upgradeability. So assuming you're intent on staying with a MAC, I would say buying a 2015 model MBP wouldn't be something be anything you'd regret in 3 months.

Yeah it had definitely crossed my mind. The new machine is an anti climax waiting to happen given how long the wait for it has been.

The other thing would be price it honestly wouldn't surprise me to see $250/£200 tacked on to the price of the new models like they did with the iPad Pro 9.7.

Plus, if you get one from the Apple refurb store (as I did) you'll get what is, effectively, a brand new machine anyway. Full warranty, like new packaging, etc. Save $230 to $270 off the list price.

Hope

There's nothing certain to say either way, but many of us hope it will be.

and then there's the silent minority of us who have stopped caring completely.

Bit offtopic:
The german Dell shop doesn't offer all the XPS 13" models anymore.
Guess they are close to announce the Kaby Lake version, can't think of any other reason.

If Xcode ran on Windows I don't think I would ever buy another Mac again.

Just migrated to Windows 10. Great to finally have a desktop with updated hardware and the ability to add your own memory, graphics and peripherals. I still don't like Android, so would still buy Apple phone. Thankfully I am not dependent on any Apple software, but if I were, I would buy a Hackintosh or iMac.

I liked the MacBook at first, but almost a year in, I sold it due to lack of 4K 60hz support, small lags and the lack of power. The mid 2015 with AMD graphics was an OK update, felt very responsive, but the fan noise was unbearable. My Hackintosh was almost silent.

Yeah I've no problems with Windows 10, would happily use it if it were an option. I've given the Mackintosh route some serious thought aswell.
