Is Apple really rumored to be ditching MagSafe, or are people on the last few pages just messing around after the iPhone lost the headphone jack?

I've heard a decent amount of rumors about them ditching magsafe, though I think we're safe to still have a headphone jack since they just sent out that survey about how much people use it and the design for this next macbook should be finalized by now.

Just spent on a hunk of change on a new car. At this point, I'll probably just keep my current rMBP.

Apple's been lagging so much that twice now(first my SP4) when I had money to spend and wanted to spend it on a new rMBP, there's no machine to be found.

Don't you know a macbook is more important than good transportation?

Thanks. Ditching MagSafe seems nuts. How would that be progress?

They ditched it for the rMB and the case leak didn't have it, either. It has the upside of being cheaper because it's not proprietary, and it's a port you you could use for other things. I'll still miss it, though.

...for most tasks that don't use the CPU/GPU. Once you engage that fan, or the computer is 2-3 years old, it isn't going to last all day. People will use the device plugged in, and in that respect it is a downgrade.

I think it will be a net win because USB C is a standard, and will be cheaper to replace and buy secondary adaptors. I don't want to think about how much I've spent on MagSafe adaptors between cat damage and worn-out cables. That said, I really wish Apple would make a magnetic version. Thinking about getting something like this, if it ships. Griffin has one but the magnetic part sticks out awkwardly from your computer.

Read the comments on the first link you posted. They're scammers!

As long as all 4 USB C ports offer charging capabilities, I will be fine with an all USB C I/O. This means that there is now a 0.4% chance of all my charging ports failing in comparison to 100%. Being able to charge from both sides is convenient. MagSafe is magnetic and tends to fray, and lose strength over the years. Replacement cables for USB C is cheaper.

Therefore I would like just a USB C charging interface, that is, until Apple offers "true" wireless charging capabilities.

How many times have you had your charging port fail? I've owned dozens of laptops and while chargers fail and batteries fail, I've NEVER had the actual port fail. What can actually fail on it?

A chassis leak came out a few months back. It's safe to say that it's going to be just the 4 USB-C ports and headphone. All else is gone. I'm sure they'll advertise the loss of magsafe along the lines of 'you'll have such a long battery life you just plug it in overnight and never have to plug it in while you're using it'.

Yeah, that's why I said "if it ships." ;) I've already been scammed by crowdfunding hardware. Never again!

Be careful with those links, somepeople follow them and signup without knowing what they're getting into.

As for the Griffin one, I'd just use that. It may stick out, but the point is that I don't need it to stay on my Mac. Just need it to breakaway if someone trips over the cord. Pretty sure they designed it to stick out so that you can pull it out easily when you're done charging.

A good policy, but don't worry, it's impossible to buy the thing now.

True, but one of the reasons I love MagSafe is that it makes it really easy to snap in your cable and remove it when you're done, and you'd lose that.

this days it seems apple is not about progress or convenient of use for her customers, its all about "courage" and carrying around dongles and adapters

it makes me so angry guys. I am waiting for new Macbooks since March Event. I worked very hard during my summer holidays. Each day 10 hours. Now I have enough money, but no new models are available. My new semester started a week ago. I can't attend some classes coz I have no laptop. I could buy the old model, but if the new come out, I will regret my decision. I am lost now .......

Agreed, but now you'd be able to plug in a single cable to wire up a dock that can give you ethernet/external drives/monitors. I also wouldn't put it past Apple to release a more elegant solution to the Griffin USB-C mag-charger as a separate accessory.

honestly as much as I love the sd card slot, hdmi, and MagSafe, i am fine with that being removed. what I am not fine with is having the headphone jack removed. I might even buy a rMB instead if the new MacBook Pro didn't have a headphone jack.

thankfully the case leak shows the headphone jack staying.

whatever you do don't buy the old model , its ridiculous to pay so much money for such a piece of old tech.

why can't you attend some classes?

I'm in college right now using a 10 year old windows laptop. (no joke it was made in 2006) and I'm fine. I'm sure you can use the library's desktops or if your really desperate you could find a MacBook from 5-9 years ago on Craigslist for around 100-150 (with good negotiation)

This is such a BS rumor. Every MacBooks' ports have started at the back without a gap.

The headphone jack on the right side (top) also starts at the back. Look at the huge space behind the USB-C ports on the left side (bottom image). It looks very strange. Something will be in that spot, and the image just isn't showing a finished product. Could be a defective unibody that someone got their hands on. Could also just be a concept unibody.

The only thing I can think of is if they needed that space for the taptic engine that drives the OLED bar. But I'm sure they could find another spot for it to make a more appealing body.

It's funny you ask that, because the pin connectors on my old MacBook, from 2008, had burnt out in 2013...and it was one of the reasons why I retired that machine.

Search iFixit and you'll find plenty cases like mine. The charging port is the most abused port, meaning there are high chances of it failing.

I definitely want the headphone jack because the MBP's headphone jack also has optical audio output so it isn't just an analog dinosaur port. From an audiophile point of view, that's a benefit. Luckily I probably don't have to worry about it going away this time around, but as of the 12th, it's been 6 months without a Mac for me and I'm freaking out -_-

I see the USB-C port on the left side being there to remain symmetrical with the right side (they both start evenly with the top physical row, just below the OLED bar). It always bugged me that they're not in the same position on my 2012.

i keep repeating myself, but the headphone jack on the far end doesn't make any ergonomic sense. i'll eat my earphones if that's the final design, it's such a piece of crap.

The rMB has it there so I don't see why Apple wouldn't do the same for the pro.
