Genuinely curious - What's the most you're willing to spend on your MacBook Pro, and how many years do you expect to keep it?

I'd go up to $4k for a maxed out unit with AppleCare. Cause I like round numbers, I'd go $5k if I can get it with a new TB display. I expect it to last me until the next redesign or until AppleCare expires (which ever is longer).

I'm in the same boat. $2000 is probably my max. I've never spend more than $1,500 on a computer but times are changing and prices are going up. I've had my current 2010 13" MBP for 6 years. So amortizing $2,000 over 5 years isn't too bad.
The most I've ever spent on a laptop is $700, so this is a huge change for me. Even more funny is I've never bought a warranty on something before! However, I've only ever heard good things about them, and the upgrade between my current HP and a Skylake MacBook Pro 13" is going to be comically obvious. Hell my current laptop doesn't even have a SSD :D!

There are EDU discuounts for all Macs. for the MBPs, they are a bit higher than the rMB. You can see for yourself at Apple's EDU store: http://www.apple.com/us-hed/shop
I suck lol! I should've asked if they offer student discounts on a brand spanking new Skylake preorder!

€1649, without edu discount. I expect to keep it at least for 2.5 years (then I'm going to college so Ill need a more powerful one or a windows laptop.)

This is interesting - Apple polling rMBP owners about variously features that they use or don't use on their rMBPs...

Surely the word "courage" should be enough.

Why did we remove MagSafe? Because we have courage, and do not fear our dog will pull the laptop off the table.
Why did we remove microSD? Because we have courage, and do not fear that a bunch of angry photographers will come over to burn our houses.
Why did we remove all other old ports? Because we have courage, and you can't make a brand new Macbook Pro without breaking a few legs. Eggs. I meant eggs.
Why did we remove headphone jack? Because we have a whole new range of Beats and AirPods now available at Apple Don't Call Them Stores Experiences around the world and those babies won't sell themselves if you follow my drift! And for those, who want to stick with the antiquated experience... that's sad... but you can buy a dongle. Like monkeys.
Why did we remove the function keys? Because we have courage, and we... and we... we can't innovate, my ass!
1. MagSafe is no longer necessary because the laptops can hold charge all day, for most tasks. It's not good to have your computer plugged in all the time anyway.
2. It's clear that the Pro machines are being catered to regular users. The users that will be taking photos with iPhones, not DSLR's.
3. Thunderbolt is deprecated, and USB B will be soon. The only one that's not entirely justifiable is HDMI, but Apple is pushing wireless.
4. Give it a year. The rumor mill says Samsung is dropping the jack too. Motorola already did it and released an adapter for USB C.
5. In the Mac ecosystem, they are less useful to begin with. They probably felt technology was at the right point to push OLED with TouchID. My only concern is the Esc key, which is used on a system-wide level for important shortcuts such as the Force Quit menu. I predict they'll relocate it to where the current Fn button is.

I hate Apple as much as I love them, lol.

...for most tasks that don't use the CPU/GPU. Once you engage that fan, or the computer is 2-3 years old, it isn't going to last all day. People will use the device plugged in, and in that respect it is a downgrade.

I think it will be a net win because USB C is a standard, and will be cheaper to replace and buy secondary adaptors. I don't want to think about how much I've spent on MagSafe adaptors between cat damage and worn-out cables. That said, I really wish Apple would make a magnetic version. Thinking about getting something like this, if it ships. Griffin has one but the magnetic part sticks out awkwardly from your computer.

And do you do that work on the couch where your dog tends to yank out the cable every time it goes past? Or do you do it at a table where you can plug the computer in when you put it down, and plug it out when you're done?

If you're really asking, the couch, actually. I use my desktop on my desk.

The wait for this macbook has been so long that - I am now even contemplating the new Alienware 15 that is due to come out *lol*
Alienware 15 would have been my top pick if it could run mac OS
there isnt a machine better than alienwares considering the upgradability factor
and the new rigs have trimmed down their thickness to the point that they are much thinner than macbook pro non retina
only downside, they are made to work on a windows 10 environment

I'm still under the impression that there will be more ports than just 4 USB-C and one headphone jack but I think we could see charging capability on both sides (not sure if all four USB-C ports would just be able to charge by default) with a new USB-C Magsafe charger.

They used to be really upgradeable, but now the CPU + GPU are soldered BGA chips. The only things you can upgrade now are memory and storage (SSD, HDD)

3000$
that would either be for the top spec MBP 15
or for a lower spec MBP15 + eGPU , if the TB3 we are getting has a nice eGPU support

As long as all 4 USB C ports offer charging capabilities, I will be fine with an all USB C I/O. This means that there is now a 0.4% chance of all my charging ports failing in comparison to 100%. Being able to charge from both sides is convenient. MagSafe is magnetic and tends to fray, and lose strength over the years. Replacement cables for USB C is cheaper.

Therefore I would like just a USB C charging interface, that is, until Apple offers "true" wireless charging capabilities.

To be honest by the looks of it I'm not sure I'll get the newest model if all it will have are usb c. Don't really want to carry dongles everywhere I go
