Let's all agree to disagree ? Different people have different perspectives / points of view and thus reach different conclusions. The moniker "PRO" meaning can be many, no one is wrong in this discussion (and no one is "righter" than the next guy either).

About the term OVERSIGHT, I think the point is Apple made a conscious decision (right or wrong) and thus it does not qualify as an "oversight". It may be a MISTAKE, FAUX PAS, etc but not an OVERSIGHT.

IMHO Apple is paying for Intel's mistakes over the last couple of years. Their execution got so bad that they were forced to move from Tik Tok to Tik Tik Tok. Their line up of chips now take >1yr to be available in all shapes and formats (laptop/desktop chips, TDPs, iGPUs, etc) so an initial launch does not mean a full launch.

I also agree the next MBP will have a 32Gb option. And that is why we will have to wait 18 months to see it.

I would also like to see the Mac Pro upgraded in 2017. Not because I am the targeted audience but simply because Apple needs to cater to this segment of extreme users IMO.

Question: everyone talks about MBPs as the "only" option for professionals. What about the iMac ? Not everyone needs a laptop for work. Can't they have 2 iMacs ? Or an iMac for their usage with 32Gb Ram and a laptop with limited functionality on the road ?

The iMac with its 5K display is really a better/ more cost efficient solution to most of these people complaining about a $4k MBP. 2x$2k iMac will solve your problems. BTW you can upgrade RAM and SSD later

It has nothing to do with execution, but with increased design costs on smaller nodes, and extremely high cost of feeding up the fabs from Intel.

Intel has its own Fabs. With every jump in nodes, design costs increase. Jump to 14 nm went from 80 mln. $ to 270 mln.
Jump from 14 nm to 7/10 nm will go from 270 mln. Smaller nodes will only increase the design costs.

And then there are wafer costs. Initial wafer costs was around 20k USD, right now its around 6K, depending on volume.

After the announcement of the MBPno, I ordered a Spectre x360 with a Kaby Lake i7 7500U, 2 in 1 design, 16GB RAM, and a 512 GB NVMe SSD, for hundreds less than even the base MBPno. I shrunk the primary Windows partition and installed Ubuntu 16.10, which recognized and supported the wireless card, touchscreen, audio subsystem, touchpad, and fan control. The hardware is running smoothly in 16.10, but the application ecosystem is abysmal. Relying on community and open source feels great, but it just does not meet my actual needs. I could boot and use windows on the laptop for those needs, but I cannot stand Windows. The commercial software that I need is all there, but the battery life is worse than under 16.10. Also, the laptop shuts itself down every night under Windows no matter the power setting. There are over a dozen different toggles to turn off before you feel like the machine is not a privacy nightmare, and even then I know it is just a false reassurance.

The touchpad in Windows 10 is nearly unusable. With the exact same hardware, the touchpad experience in 16.10 is nearly as good as my former Mac laptops. Microsoft apparently drives touchpad scrolling like the input is coming from a mouse roller, WTF. No wonder they are focusing on touchscreens.

The touchscreen and 2 in 1 capability aren't useful for me. The iPad's touch only interface really nailed it and spoiled me in my expectations for a touch device. The add-on touch experience in Windows and Ubuntu aren't great. Ubuntu 16.10 doesn't change modes when folded into a tablet. So you can't see the keyboard, but it is still active, and you can only interact with the touchscreen, which registers touches as clicks, making scrolling a chore. I know there are scripts that can be written to toggle modes for the keyboard and touchscreen, but I will not use that mode enough to make it worth the trouble of writing and installing the scripts. I haven't used Windows enough to really form an opinion of the usefulness of their touch implementation, but I did play around with web browsing and long document reading in tablet mode, and I was unimpressed. The iPad is better for that. The heat, fans, and feeling the keyboard on the back surface really detract from the tablet use for me. Tent mode for videos was nice.

I've still got Mac desktops, but these days Apple seems to obsolete desktop machines on a quicker pace than releasing new ones. I wonder where that is heading. If my desktop Macs break, I will not replace any of them with any current Mac desktop. I have stand alone monitors, so iMacs are not a good solution for me. I sold my old MBP to try the rMB, which was a huge mistake. I could not abide the short keyboard travel and sold the damn thing. I do not have demanding needs for my laptop. I have desktops for the demanding work, but I need a mobile computing device that is more capable than an iPad or iPhone. With the direction of the MBPno and rMB, if they would just put a retina screen into a MBA, I would be satisfied with the performance level of that. Replace one of the USB-A ports with one USB-C, throw in Kaby Lake U, keep Magsafe and the SD card reader, and call it a day.

I've been without a Mac laptop since the summer, which is the longest stretch for me since 2002. Usually it is no more than a week or two of waiting after I sold the old one anticipating the release of the new one. So after more than a year of waiting for a Skylake MBP, I got a Kaby Lake, and now I am back waiting for a Kaby Lake Mac.

Sorry to say it, but Apple aren't interested in the pro customer any more. They make far more money from basic consumers who buy their for-the-masses products in droves. Don't expect to see Apple pushing any boundaries to satisfy our small slice of the customer base, ever again.

I like the old Mac Pro prior to the black "kettle" they introduced in 2013. Substantial and solid does it for me. Got an old Power Mac G5 I keep meaning to Hackintosh, and have managed to find an old G4 Cube that may not work, but the case looks in reasonable enough nick to make me consider tinkering with a bit of electronic surgery too. Sounds far more fun than the current range.

My new 2015 MacBook Pro and Quad core 2012 Mac Mini will cover everything else in the meantime.

I think they are showing themselves to be overly zealous in squeezing profits out of every product line, and if they don't think its making enough money, they kill off the product.
Interesting how they are doing this while half the analysts are worried about how their portfolio is not diverse enough. "Apple relies on iPhones too much." – "We're killing off Thunderbolt Display, Airport and Time Capsule. Better now or do we have to officially discontinue Mac Pro and Mini?"

Its ironic, and while both the ACD or the AE are not huge product lines, they are something that gave Appel the freedom to provide a full solution to consumers.

It's been a long time since I read anything Mac related.

BUT WOW!!! Seems like Apple dropped the ball altogether with this one!

3 hours battery life! Glitchy graphic cards! Overpriced!

Hopefully all this backlash pushes them to add more battery, and cut down the price by substantial amounts and just overall improve the next model.

No,they won't,i fear, they will down throttle by software update and will say something about we power it wrong.

Steve Jobs always talk about portability and battery. Surprise us with macbook pro 2017
12 hours battery
nvidia again
I won't buy the 2016 mbp due to graphics and battery issues, but i am tired of wait:(:(

Add the speakers/bootcamb issue to the list.. even though they fixed it.

just canceled my order. lesson learned. Gen 1 of apple products are beta..

I'm joining this thread.

I kinda wonder if Apple won't stick to "yearly" updates, and maybe update the MBP in the summer to address these battery issues... Keep in mind the last time they updated the MBP in October, they had a refresh in July of the following year... I'm strongly considering returning this current version and waiting...

Maybe instead of being so secretive, Apple should get together select groups of both home and professional users around the globe to pre-test new products after signing NDA's. That way there would be less of a rose tinted and biased opinion of new hardware, and less glitches that went unnoticed until after release.

I'm expecting some kind of small bump from Feb - April. Generally, I find Apple does not release new Macs during their back to school promotion - they move the old stock. So if we don't see something by then, I would expect a full year before a refresh

I am expecting at least 12 months between refreshes, maybe 18 months due to Intel timetable (Cannonlake, Coffeelake).

Kaby Lake will only be for the retina MB (that needs improvement in CPU & battery life). 12 month refresh cycle as well.

A spec bump in February would surely anger a lot people...who might not even be receiving their 2016 orders until January

Generally they don't but they did in 2014
Also rMBP was refreshed for the first time in Feb 2013 after WWDC2012 launch, about 8 months. Then again in Oct 2013, another 8 months.
My guess is a refresh near WWDC2017/before Back to School is possible if they decide to go with Kaby Lake .

I'm not sure they'll do any bump until next fall. I think they'll be sticking to their time frame, especially since the desktop hardware is expected to be updated in the spring.

That would be a shame if Apple doesn't do a refresh in the spring or summer. I'm impressed with the AMD 460 pro GPU but AMD will be coming out with VEGA early next year. I'm interested in seeing what performance improvements VEGA would bring to the table for the MBP. I guess fall would make sense since Apple rarely does small refreshes.

Did exactly the same. I also simply don't like the idea of the touchbar. Try watching Fullscreen videos and it actually is reflected in your screen...

Not sure if i should wait or buy the 2015 model. Apple has lost me.
